    I recently did 840 miles on my LiveWire in two days, and like you, most of my stops were 20-30 mins. After a while that’s just not long enough 😆 I felt like as soon as I caught my breath it was time to get back on the road again. The time at those stops goes very quickly, and I think people underestimate an average stop time at the petrol station.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Right?? Nowadays it's common to wait in line at the gas station for at least 10-15min, then filling takes another 5min.. if you need the bathroom or wanna buy snacks, that's another 10min. So really I guess it's not too different unless you're a "splash and dash" kinda rider.

    • @bikeelectric4821
      @bikeelectric4821 Před 10 měsíci +1

      I almost bought the LiveWire last year instead of the Energica, but was turned off by the charging. How many kilowatts can the LiveWire charge at? I'm seriously impressed you traveled 840 miles in two days. Also, when I was in college I would time my petrol stops at 6 minutes, but as an adult with family I found my stops were literally 40 MINUTES at gas stations, I mean... HOW? So 20 minutes at a charging station is really really fast.

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero Před 10 měsíci

      @@bikeelectric4821 🤣🤣🤣but those are some high quality 40 minutes though 😆 peak charging rate is 22kW, but it’s a set curve by SoC, the charging rates are set. You will only see peak charging speeds at the low end of SoC.

    • @IIARROWS
      @IIARROWS Před 10 měsíci

      @@bikeelectric4821 It's similar for the Livewire, the time is the same.
      One thing we are not considering is that with an electric bike you are forced to take many small stops, so over the time you may feel that 30 minutes is not long enough, but in a long run with fairly limited time* you don't have budget for longer stops when you want/need it.
      For example, let's say you have 5 stops, each of 30 minutes (we know it's not going to happen, but take that for simplicity). It means 2h30m of stops.
      If you stop for 1 hour, you are basically wasting the time for a recharging stop so you bring the time to 3h.
      On a gas bike you may have like 4 stops (because of longer range, and I'm generous), which take 5 minutes each for 20 minutes. If you stop for 1 hour, your total is 1h20m (and here I'm not subtracting refuelling, as that's an active action you cannot complete while eating :P ).
      Overall, many small stops are worse than one long one.
      * about limited time, right now I'm planning a long run of 2000 miles in 48 hours from the Iron Butt Association, I have about 10 hours budget. With electric, if it were possible, I couldn't set aside a couple of hours to rest as it's already taken by charging stops.

    Remember when I mentioned to you that I was walking down a side street in Welly, and turned around to see S's Energica go past on the main street? That was entirely due to hearing that distinctive Energica sound and turning around as a result, something I'd only previously heard on CZcams videos, but it is that distinctive! Great review! I agree with your comments on the bike. Fortunately, I haven't experienced the problems with the brake rotors yet on my Energica but it's definitely happened with the Brembo rotors on my Moto Guzzi Norge. I'm still surprised how many motorcycle people have not heard of Energica. I guess they see electric and totally dismiss it as not a real motorcycle. Every once in awhile I'll run into someone who knows what they are and I get barraged with questions about the bike. That does seem to happen more frequently now than when I first got the bike last April.
    I need to post your review on Facebook so my riding buddies get a better understanding of what the bike is about.
    I like all of the Energica branded things you were wearing in the review. Energica needs a merch store. I haven't been able to find anything outside of some sketchy looking online T-shirt sites.

Apart from that I still love this bike but have lost faith in its reliability.

    Hi Sam! Thank you for this great review and all your Energica videos (especially the NZ road trips - I love it ❤). I'm this 🤏 close to buying the EsseEsse 9+. I have two very practical questions for which you might be the right person to answer:
    1. How do you apply chain care? My Suzuki Bandit, I can just put on the main stand, switch to neutral and move the rear wheel by hand. The Energicas neither have a main stand nor a neutral gear. How do you do that?
    2. Can you park it on a slope, i.e. will the motor provide enough resistance even when switched off?
    Thank you and best regards from Munich (if you ever happen to be near Munich I would love to show you the Alps 😎)!

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hey awesome! Thanks for watching 😁 You'll either need a rear wheel stand (paddock stand that lifts the swingarm) or do the roll-and-spray if you're out on a trip. Unfortunately there still isn't a parking brake so I'd recommend not parking on a slope facing down. Some people have installed Bullet Brakes, and those seem to work. Good luck!

    Funny you should mention the 30min DC-charge dilemma. Same thing with our Renault Zoé ("50kW" DC, more like 45 and decreasing), the optimal combination to go to my wife's parents (500km) is to make two 30min stops so you don't waste time in the 80-100% region, however it means eating a sandwich, and being bored on next stop. This summer we took the 15 min + 1h option, so we could have a proper restaurant break with the kids, even if it's sub-optimal.

    I've been eyeing this after randomly finding a used one about 10 hours away, not even a year old, for a hefty discount since the high price is a hard sell. Its definitely an upgrade over a Zero, though I wish it had a belt instead of chain, for less maintenance. For the high price, I honestly expected the battery to also be liquid cooled, especially with its performance. Honestly still on the fence because no dealer in my area, which means no way to get service or warranty work. And just watching your video on changing the oil, thats waay too much work just for an oil change. That alone is already making me consider a Zero again. At the end of the day, it still suffers from low range. My usual weekend rides are 100+ miles, riding in canyons pushing it hard. So it'll get less than the average 125 miles, much less than any ice bike I've owned, which have been mostly sport bikes around the 200 mile range. And then the charging time... anyone else I ride with will already be filled up while they're waiting on me. Well, they'll be waiting on me because I need to charge and they have fuel to go another 80 miles easily. And thats assuming wherever we go has a level 3 charger for the quickest possibility. I truly do want an electric bike, I already have a Tesla, so I'm 100% for electric. And honestly with what has been released over the past decade, I feel like Tesla would be the only capable to bring out an electric motorcycle that would actually get people to switch and for a good price. Otherwise such electric motorcycles are priced more than cars.

    15 minutes are really a sweet spot. You get a break from having a sore ass but not so much that it's pointless. I have a BMW CE04 and I love it. No DC charging but it's a city bike. Regardless I did 3000km in a little bit over a month. It's a lot of fun. The AC charging would be to slow for me on the Energica, as I have to charge on the street with public chargers, and DC is not very common.

    Nice video, Sam. Agree that E2W are great. I think my LiveWire is just as fast 1/4 mile. I imagine from its Italian heritage the Energica does handle like my Multistrada and so better than the LiveWire, which does have Brembos by the way. LiveWire will only DC fast charge at 13Kw so you win there but LiveWire battery is liquid-cooled...when I get back to New Zealand I really must drop by for a closer look.I guess the main thing is that E2W now has real choice.😀

    You didn't mention price in this video, but I think it's worth mentioning the "upcharge" to go with a energica over a comparable super naked isn't that much compared to electric cars vs gas cars. The US site for energica lists the ribelle MSRP at $25k while a similarly spec'd bmw S1000R is around 22k or Ducati Streetfighter V4 at $22k. Imagine if someone was cross shopping a $22k Civic but they could get a fully EV Civic for $25k, a bit of a no brainer.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Dude, that is a GREAT point! It's hard to compare range and charging speed, and even 210hp vs 170hp is a huge leap (how the hell does the Streetfighter V4 have so much power??) but the Energica's torque makes up for it. If you charge at night for super cheap or use free charging stations and then subtract all the Ducati maintenance cost, electric wins pretty quick haha.

The fast charge IS nice though. 30 minutes really is not too bad, and of course everyone wants faster faster, everyone is so impatient nowadays, I think humanity has become spoiled.
    The only real complaint I have with mine is the keyfob error message can get really annoying sometimes, but thats really, I guess you could call it cosmetic, it does not hurt performance a bit.
    On the windscreen, their racing bike has a HUGE wind screen, I wonder if you could order one and put it on the Ribelle or is it just too totally different?
    The only thing Id like to really see is a faster AC charge. Pair a few of their existing chargers and pump it up to 6-7 kw or so. That's still 30 amps or less off the mains, which is pretty much the standard breaker for 240 VAC so would really not be a huge strain on your house, nor an exorbitant expense like when I wired in my 30kw fast charger at home and had to breaker it at 155 Amps.

    8:04, I like my screen. (Skip to bottom of comment for tldr conclusion)
    I personally don’t mind looking through the screen while cruising in light traffic for maximum aero efficiency. I can immediately see the Wh/m, or Wh/km change favorably when fully tucking behind the screen, plus the wind noise is dramatically quieter when lowering my helmet just enough for air to flow over the top of my helmet (my Scorpion R1 helmet’s duck tail and Dainese race-humped jacket may play its own role).
    I have found it’s easier my me to achieve an optimal tucking position with the screen adjusted to its highest position. I also find that on long multi state trips, resting my chest and helmet on my tank bag makes maintaining this position for long durations more comfortable.
    I also acknowledge that my physical size undoubtedly helps. So far, I have yet to find anyone get the range or efficiency I get on my non-EMCE Ribelle. The closest I’ve seen any other Enérgica rider get range-wise was Gabe in his EMCE Ego. (He and I have near identical max range figures - he’s also a little taller than me fwiw). Further helps we are both on the skinny side, and being able to tuck in our body bits a more than our taller, ahem, muscular brethren. I’ve further verified this on side by side rides with better efficiency compared to the other Enérgica riders *with* my panniers attached, while the other riders had backpacks and/or tail bags.
    As a result, I personally believe the windscreen helps with efficiency, but only perhaps in situations where the rider is of a size that can tuck the majority of their knees, elbows, arms, chest, feet, and head close enough to the bike’s fairing and behind the fairing.
    I’ve also noticed that the distance my helmet is from the windscreen front to back plays it’s part in smoother air flow. Too close or too far, additional turbulence is created and the real time Wh/m reflects that. For my body size, about 3” from the screen edge is optimal for me, with the screen’s top lining up to just above to the top of my helmet’s visor. I also sometimes use a cone shaped tail bag to help with reducing turbulence.
    If all of what I was doing with body position, tucking, placing a cone shaped bag in the pillion and so on, only amounted to a 5% efficiency gain, even that would be worth it imo. Case in point; my personal best is 162 miles (100% SOC to 2%) at freeway speeds (cruise control set at 67mph indicated, which we all know is more like 61mph actual, and in the right-most lane), on the 10 with minimal elevation changes, wind speeds

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Oh yeah for sure! If I tucked the whole time I guarantee the windscreen would make a difference, but wow 162 miles is IMPRESSIVE!! I need to get back out there and try hypermiling it. The speed limits here are strictly enforced to like 62-65mph so that should help the range, but there are so many massive elevation changes that I feel it would be a challenge. A fun challenge though!

      I live in a rural area with many lanes of travel and vehicles, including trucks, can easily go around if necessary. Doing cruise control range runs at 61mph is no big deal on the stretches of highway I live next to. I understand it may not be the same in metropolis areas or in some countries. Nor do I expect everyone’s motorways to be as level or as straight. ...and yes, they are toys/luxury bikes.
    As they are simply not capable of doing the same things other motorcycles are.
    Even the most honest and well meaning (some migth say only such) electric motorcycle manufacturer fails to make the bare minimum concessions to physics.
    Energica bikes still go with the naked motorcycle design that brings with it the aerodynamic qualities of a well designed parachute.
    I am not saying they need to go as far as the WMC250EV prototype did.
    ...still, they refuse to do things as simple as having the front mudgard come down to cover the front of the front tyre.
    Plenty enough people have been thirsting for an "IRL akira bike", to make well designed feet forwards desirable.
    That design comes with extra range and extra speed FOR FREE.
    ...did energica employ said design for its tourer?
    OF COURSE NOT!
    Does electric drivetrain make it trivial to have your front wheel driven by a smaller motor for drastically improved offroad performance?
    YES!
    Did any manufacturer utilize this fact?
    HELL NO!
    In short electric bike manufacturers are a travesty.
    Energica standa out as its a company that doea the bare minimum. As opposed to selling vaporware, or bikes as service.
    Yes, allowing your battery to be charged at the speeds its chemistry allows is THE BARE MINIMUM. Thats on thw level of nissan leaf. Currently all self respecting EV makers have batteries with active cooling so batteries dont crap themselves after a few year in hot climates.

      Fold-out solar panels would have to be the size of your house roof to do any good, and it would still take hours to charge.
      All motorcycles are toys, when it comes down to it. We ride for fun. Like buying a sports car. That's a toy, too. You can use them as tools to commute to work if you want, but the main purpose is fun.
      "Highway speed" in most parts of the world are 100-110km/h, so if you ride faster or hit the autobahn, your range will go down. At the race track doing 200km/h I've gotten the range down to 80km, so it really depends how fast you wanna go.
      You're right that the battery should have liquid cooling and the charging should be faster. That's what I said in the video. Hopefully the tech continues to improve. The way I see it, we've barely had electric motorcycles for 10 years and they already accelerate faster than gas bikes, so I don't think it'll take very long to catch up in other ways.

      130km/h is a pretty common speed limit. Frankly its typical in europe (for ~500 million people)., and for russia. Even China and India goe with 120km/h. As such for wast majority of planets inhabitants 100-110km/h is not highway speed.
      Stating otherwise is simply lieing - i am not sure if you are doing this because you are paid for it, or because you are that heavily invested in perpetuating bullshit advertisement provided by manufacturers due to sunk cost fallacy.

      It will and in some ways it won't.
      Charging speed of lithium based batteries has physical limitations, that make charging faster than 1C very unlikely - so at the moment the what is to be reasonably expected is marginal improvements somehwere in the region of 1h charging time.
      Good news is that active thermal manadgement is an engineering problem thats solved - solution just needs to be implemented.
      So that will sort the issue for thermal throttling when charging in hot enviroment.
      "haha I have no idea why you're salty. Did you try and ride an electric motorcycle on a long trip and run out of battery?"
      I am salty because even the most honestand well meaning manufacturer - energica is refusing to accept physics.
      And the less said about...
      - Lightning, the vaporware company
      - Zero, the "we sell services not bikes" company riddled with false claims
      ...well the better.
      There is no way around the fact that to get range (with currently available battery chemistries), you either need 30-40kWh battery capacity, or need to ditch Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme's ban (from 1958) on fairings. Physics is a cruel mistress.
      I sometimes find my 400-500km range on my conventional bike short.
      The realistic ~100-150km highway range of various top models is simply not viable for me, its not even in the correct ballpark, especially when coupled with charging times.
      Ofc. its not only about aero.
      Like i said i am at least as pissed about the drivetrain.
      There is NO reason to keep conventional final drive between wheel and electric motor outside racetrack. Its hogging power thus its hogging range. It creates a point of failure, and a needless maintenance item.
      Oh and lets not forget offroad.
      Something like a christini drive costs a fortune to manufacture - and that is pretty much how you can go with all wheel drive on ICE bikes.
      Electric drive means you can easily have a (relatively smaller) motor drive the front wheel - it doesn't need much power, it just needs to ensure front wheel is driven so its not pushed into things - thus stallijng, instead it drags itself oer stuff thanks to being driven.
      Thats big enough a difference that a dinosaur of a bike - like rokon - thats underpowered to the extreme is more capable offroad than anything else on 2 wheels.

      Just to clear things up, I'm not sponsored or paid to make these videos. I don't work for Energica, just like I didn't work for Zero. I'm a fan of EVs because they provide an experience you can't get with ICE vehicles.
      I've lived in and traveled to lots of countries so I'm aware of speed limits. In the US, 130km/h (80mph) is pretty common just about everywhere because no one drives the speed limit. If you go that fast on an Energica, range would probably be around 160-170km. ICE motorcycle companies don't tell you how far their bikes can go because fuel economy also varies greatly depending on how fast you ride. At the race track I'll run out of gas in 100km.

      160-170km range on energic is OK-ish.

      My old vstrom can accomplish somwhere just under 400km on highways.
      And goes for over 500km in the twisties.
      To put it bluntly its not expensive, the repair can be done by anyone willing - instead "anti-right to repair" practices, and it can go wherever i want to go.
      Like it or not - due to charging speeds - on electric motorcycles maximum range figures are way more important than on internal combustion engine powered ones.
      My gripe is not with electric bikes.
      My issue is with companies misleading customers, and some customers peddling said bullshit.
      Lets start with the scum.
      Lightning is a vaporware seller - on level of Escobar inc. as a manufacturer of foldable smartphones.
      Zero is a scam, they refuse to build battery packs compatible with stations - so they can sell accessory "fast chargers". They have a very "unique" take on monetisation, that will stop majority of their suposed customer base from ever purchasing from them. And the less is said about their "hostile to consumer" repair practices (or lack thereof), the better.
      I will grant that energica is a honest manufacturing company.
      They create decent products.
      My issue is that its the only on such company, and people are worshipping decent, as if it should be something thats not reasonable to expect. Energica doesn't exactly pioneering innovation. It just puts in the minimum effort to create electric vehicles worthy of being called a motorcycle.
      Would it be possible, to create great electric bikes, that are cool while accepting what they are instead of being a worse version of internal combustion engine powered bikes?
      Yes.
      You can do thing on electric bikes, that are not even remotely plausible on classic motorcycles.
      Yes, it will look different doesn't mean it can be cool.
      Sure "Harley putt-putt" is not reasonable on electric drivetrain. However you can do other things that are as cool. For example you can use mercury arc valves with glass sidewalls in stead of mosfets tto power the coils of electric motors: czcams.com/video/YhaQqgXrMMU/video.html
      Would that not be damned cool?
      You could also build bikes with decent aero.
      You don't even need to go "all out" function over form to get radical improvement compared to contemporary bike chic. For example stealing the fairing thats in front of the front wheel of WMC250EV wouldn't be THAT hard. static.wixstatic.com/media/95ac29_14253fc61eae4951bc2071de30a9e797~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1000,h_533,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/95ac29_14253fc61eae4951bc2071de30a9e797~mv2.jpg
      When air is hitting the nice smooth fairing, instead of getting whisked by the thread on the front wheel you got the lowest hanging fruit of aerodynamic improvements.
      Similarly, getting a powered front wheel is trivial on an electric motorcycle.
      ...except when you have manufacturers like zero, who are proudly producing their machines run on a system called "cypher", not even hiding the fact that not only do they refuse to make decent things - they also want to stop customers from improving their products after purchase.
      Oh and since electric bikes use relatively tiny motor (compared to bulky combustion engines) - and battery cells have no need to be bunched up in one loction, they can be placed anywhere, manufacturers have way more freedom with the shape of the motorcycle

      The fact that it leaks is not the big issue. The real problem is that you need it cooled or pressurized to be able store it in reasonable volumes - which is necessary for use on vehicles. And we currently have no way to put hydrogen in efficient storage without wasting huge amounts of energy.
      If someone manages to electrolize water at high pressure, without the produced hydrogen and oxygen dissolving into water, and leaking into the wrong container that way, then said energy issue is drastically reduced.
      Hydrogen's real big benefit is that its light, thus when used on aircraft it reduces lift induced drag - thus need to use less fuel.
      And ofc. its not restircted to props (like electric motors), as props are not 100% efficient. And with prop stuck on an electric motor you get the same efficiency as you get with high bypass jet engines burning fuel at high altitude.

    You've finally achieved nirvana with an almost perfect motorcycle that checks all the boxes and even the wife can't get enough of her own, so now all that's left to tease you about are those cold Nancy-boy hands.

    Never buy an EVA vehicle "for nature's sake", as under the final line, they do as much damage as a gaspowered vehicle. Just buy EVA vehicles for real positive things like the unlimited amount of torque or that you can come home at night and don't wake the whole neighbourhood.

      @@NewZeroland Also, cheers for the vid, my good sir. As a biker myself, the best thing about driving a bike is slaloming and the acceleration. I don't care about top speed. I'm not sold on EV cars, cause of the massive batteries, but for something like a motorcycle, EV looks like a brilliant thing. The Lightning LS looks like a scam, but I see everyone being very enthousiastic about Energica. As someone that has driven both the Ego and the Ribelle, how would you describe the sitting position between the two? I am a bit tall, so I am looking for a bit more upright than the ZX6R I got now. I luckily can drive my Kawa for a long time, but I just break down in 15 minutes on a CBR, needing a break.
