Network security is a never ending industry. Think, how much tech we have around us, and they will always need a person there.

About how many months of helpdesk would you recommend before looking to pivot into a Network Engineering role? I currently have my Master's in Cybersecurity, Sec+ and I'm working towards CCNA right now. I have only just started help desk.

I would recommend about a year to a year and a half. It also depends on what duties you perform at the helpdesk. Keep working towards your CCNA and once done you can then look to pivot.

Hi, How did you practically move from helpdesk to network engineer role? I mean network engineer job ads request experience in things you havent done in helpdesk. I rarely see junior network engineer positions.

I’m kinda in the same boat. Accumulating soon 3 years of helpdesk 2 of which are networking helpdesk but this experience is overseas, I passed ccna, I have an expired AWS practitioner. Planning to return to Oz, is it even possible to start with network engineer job or gotta do helpdesk again? Wondering also if I should study for CCNP already while not doing any networking job

Hi, I would recommend you research about cybersecurity first and check a few free courses online to give you an idea of what the field is like. If you are certain this is what excites you then you can further make decisions to change your stream into computer engineering or IT.
Fun fact- I am also an Electronics Engineer who hated it and transitioned into Security down the track.

Me too, I started off in Electronics Engineering but after working at Boeing Satellite Systems after college my interest in networking was strong. I even took a pay cut to work a job getting more networking skills. Was hard at first because there was no training but 4 years later I’m one of the top performers

Yes absolutely. Having a degree is not crucial to get into the Cyber domain. You can check the channel for more videos on what courses/certs to do and how to prepare your profile for your first ever role!

Try bug Bounty hunting if you are good at cybersecurity.
