- The BBC was hit with a one day strike sometime in 1998, this meant that Live programming was rather scarce on this day. Breakfast News wasn't shown at all, it was replaced with News 24 and repeats of Call My Bluff. This clip shows News 24 later in the day, presented by Sian Williams, it was also simulcast on BBC World, hence why the TOTH is slightly different. The BBC didn't go on strike again until May 2005, when again there was no Breakfast and News 24 & World were simulcasting for the duration of the industrial action.
The old Flags music was badass.
Always thought of that theme music was something to do with sports events rather than the news.
Sian Williams was an editor on BBC News 24 then, but she also quite often presented the news together with Gavin Estler in the afternoon prime-time. She was asked once to replace one of the potential presenters before the channel was launched, and she performed so well that she was offered also to present the news. At least that's what I read on Wikipedia.
When this video was uploaded it was more closer to time it was recorded(10yrs) than to now(13yrs)
would be great if they brought back the flags theme - way better than anythign since
Call My Bluff on News 24?! "And now, strike - is it... something you do to a match, a description of an attack or is it a common occurrence on News 24? Sandi"!
Judging from the headline sequence, this strike was on June 4, 1998. Not May.
Hey, exactly 24 years ago!
But yeah, that high speed crash is likely the Eschede derailment which would point it to somewhere after June 3.
Furthermore searching about a ticket scandal in 1998 results in an article published on June 5. So June 4 would be plausible considering
that there is an old online BBC article describing a strike on that day (and another on Oct 20?) - but either way there are no reported strikes that occured in May.
I am not sure how the uploader got the date wrong, but perhaps the search algorithms were worse in 2008 than I wish to acknowledge
why the hell did the BBC change their theme?
this was perfectly fine and it has a global theme to it too!
Standardisation. It's human nature to want to make everything the same - erase individuality.
hell yeah! i remember watching bbc world with my grandpa and i'd just watch it for the flags music!
Boy, that bird at 1:10 sure does look like the Jayhawk from the University of Kansas...
This is from 4th June 1998.
Is that a phone ringing in the background?
Also used the BBC News 24 on BBC One.
Oh, I'm sorry - no, it's my fault, I misread the text, I see now - Breakfast News wasn't on AT ALL - got it now! Still, would've been funny to see it on News 24!
I Like the flags music
0:17 What flag was that supposed to represent?
Wasn't this clip removed from CZcams awhile ago?
June 4, 1998
I wonder who got the giant Catalan flag?
Noel Edmonds.
When was that?
Call..My..Bluff...on News 24...
*I don't wanna live on this planet anymore*
When the BBC uses be credible and not biased
