    Battletech and Battle Brothers for me. Managing a merc company is a super interesting concept in my opinion and slowly upgrading your characters and their kit certainly helps making it a game I'll return to. Battle Brothers in particular is so visceral and satisfying that I can lose entire days in the low magic setting.
    Though both of them require the dlcs to play and get the full experience, and in Battletech in particular one of the many expansion mods, I recommend BEX or BTA, to really make it as interesting as possible.

    • @shawngillogly6873
      @shawngillogly6873 Před rokem

      @@Napoleonic_S How is Battletech NOT a TRPG? It has choice and consequence. It has turn-based combat. It has clear character-building mechanics. Now, maybe Roguetech wrecks this. I never liked that mod. But it's absolutely a TRPG.
      XCom you can call a strategy game. But it's nowhere near a Grand Strategy Game. It has nothing in common with Paradox games, Total War, or Terra Invicta. In fact, that Pavonis had to create an entirely different game to fulfill the fiction of playing as The Spokesman tells you XCom isn't the same type of game and can't be.

    • @ayuvir
      @ayuvir Před rokem +2

      @@Napoleonic_S Tactics RPG means that it's a game where you have a tactical component, usually defined by having a set number of actions in a turn based combat system, and marrying RPG elements such as character growth, equipment growth, floating numbers, dialogue options etc...
      Battletech has all of that. It's a tactics game, you have vehicles making actions in turns with a complex damage system, and you have RPG elements such as increasing your pilot's stats, tweaking the mechs etc...
      I don't know what TBS stands for but I can assure you that Battletech fits nicely in the TRPG greater category of games and fits the TBS subgenre.

    • @SCHU50
      @SCHU50 Před rokem +2

      +1 Really enjoyed Battletech. Story, setting and gameplay are all excellent. It's also one of the few games in which I rarely skip the intro that plays upon launch. Would love to see a review by Mortym.

      @@SCHU50 That intro is the closest thing to Homeworld perfection in establishing lore and setting in one shot.

    • @ayuvir
      @ayuvir Před rokem +1

      @@Napoleonic_S Then TBS is the greater term and TRPG is the subcategory.
      Terra Invicta is more of a grand strategy game than a TRPG as you control countries, manage income, production , laws and your spaceships aren't piloted by your council. It has very little to do with a TRPG. Hearts of Iron, crusader kings, victoria, europa uiniversalis are grand strategy games as the focus is to lead a country.
      XCOM is very much a TRPG as you grow your characters and you may get immersed in them, their character, over time. Xenonauts is too to a lesser extent as growing your characters is beyond your control and all they get are stats. Xenonauts is closer to a simulation than a TRPG.
      But one thing's for sure, they are all TBS.

    @stefanjoksa Před rokem +3

    Mutant Year Zero is by far my favorite of the turn based rpgs. You have a real time world which you can explore and through which you navigate and when you get into combat the game goes turn based, but there is also a stealth mechanics, so you can execute stealth kills before even entering combat. It has some very refreshing takes on the genre. And I wish more games would get rid of the grid system and embrace more fluid system like the one Divinity Original Sin uses. The cover mechanics have become outdated and really need some innovation.

    Being a maniacal fan of this genre I really appreciate the vid. I found Troubleshooter very interesting but plagued by the fact that is soooo wide and long that it could have used a bit of a faster pace. The Tactics Ogre Remake is great but as one that is still waiting for a worthy successor to Final Fantasy Tactics it left me wanting for more depth.
    If you haven't played it yet you should definitely emulate the PSP version of FFT or try out the next best thing that ever came out on PC, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark.

I remember that game being quite good, with fantastic writing and art in particular, but it really didn't explain itself very well if I remember right - does this version have a tutorial segment or the like that introduces you to its systems?

    My favorite will always be the original Vandel Hearts on ps1. It was the first of the I played way back in 1997-98 and I fell in love with it. As a kid nothing was better than seeing the outrageous blood fountains upon character dying even though very pixellated by today standards.

    Well, XCOM 2 War of the Chosen towers head and shoulders above anything else in this genre made in the last 20 years or so for me... So there's that.
    But before that we had Jagged Alliance 2.
    Also, honorable mention for Battle Brothers.

    Final Fantasy Tactics. Absolutely exploded my little mind when I first played it in middle school. I learned about heretics, patricide, and church conspiracies. Also it was hard as nails for me then. I barely understood the systems and good God the RNG hated me. Plus the way the story ends. I wish there was a convenient way for me to play the remake War of the Lions.

    Battletech, Battle Brothers, and XCom are my three favorites, by far.
    Daemonhunters has a good story and is fun once through. But the pacing lets the game down enough that I can't enjoy it on replays. I actually think King Arthur: A Knight's Tale is a more replayable game than 40K, because the alignment system means that even though the missions are (mostly) the same, the characters are completely different. Which makes approaching them a different problem to solve.

    Are games like Warhammer 3, Crusader Kings 3, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Divinity 2: Original Sin, Bannerlord, and Wasteland 3 considered TRPGs? I mention them because they're some of my favorite games of all time. I know they're RPGs but are they specifically TRPGs?
    As for Nintendo Switch, I have like 15 days of play time into Tactics Ogre: LUCT, and I've played a lot of Fire Emblem (all the games released in the past 5 years or so), Civilization 6, Monster Hunter: Rise & Sunbreak, Pokemon Violet, etc
    I'm not sure what the difference is between Tactical RPGs and normal RPGs - they seem almost the same to me.

    • @sinisterdesign
      @sinisterdesign Před rokem

      DD is definitely not a TRPG; you need 2D or 3D movement (preferably on a grid) for that.

    I wouldn't count those as RPG because I think they need to have roleplaying but in this genre Xcom2 with War of the chosen would be my favorite. Dawn of war 2 is also really good but real-time (with active pause if you want) and more RPG since you have some narrative choices in the expansion
    I read that Gears tactics has a system like bravado, I wonder if Mort tried it. But of course it has AAA price :(

  • @fringer6

    I'd recommend Black Book to you for a future playthrough. It's a card-combat game, which I don't normally like, but the art style, story, and Slavic Mythos absolutely hooked me.
    My favorite so far has to be Daemonhunter. The combat animations feel good, and I genuinely have a good time with the fast-pacing.
