    I agree that from a technical, theoretical standpoint, Nirvana wasn't the most "talented", nor "intellectual" rock band of their time. At times, their music was very primitive compared to other alternative rock bands of their era, let alone the legends imprinted on the fabric of music history. However, to even compare and criticize Nirvana to other musicians/artists, especially to Hendrix and Dylan, would be missing the point entirely.
    Nirvana is a PUNK band, first and foremost. Their ethos revolved around passion, spontaneity, and creativity, all jammed into simplicity. They didn't pride themselves on being the most intricate artists (though at times, their music, especially on In Utero, could rival quite a few art rock/metal bands at the time in terms of lyricism), but what they lacked in complexity, they made up for in sheer energy combined with abstract idealism. Kurt had a highly original mindset and imagination, corrupted to dolorous imagery and unmitigated horror. No artist could ever capture the pitiful scenarios he fantasized about, and transform it into a beautifully melodic, yet angry record, that laid the template for music eternally. Kurt Cobain's singing was somewhat of an acquired taste, but still was original insofar he was the first real singer to actually yell melodically, without sounding like a ditz or a moron. Smells Like Teen Spirit represented the apathy and nihilism of teenagers and adults at that time, and managed to achieve what most considered unfathomable: to appeal to both social outcasts/space cadets and the typical, bravado jocks Kurt himself hated. And plus, with Nevermind, they finally managed to destroy the superficiality of the glam/hair metal era and in turn, finally gave rise to indie and alternative as the most popular form of rock, beginning a new era of creativity to music itself. If Nirvana attempted to be taken seriously as the new Beethoven or Mozart, or even to simply rival Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix or the Beatles, then they failed miserably as a band. However, if they wanted to grow their passion for music and explore their artistic side more, and reshape rock as a whole for possibly the entirety of the modern era, then they perfectly achieved so.
    Judging by your comments, you strike me as a person seeking more technically advanced forms of music, which I understand. You're entitled to your opinion on Nirvana, but at least respect their influence to music history, because a band like Nirvana only comes around once in a generation.

    Ridiculous how people criticize Kurt for his "ability" with the guitar. How many virtuous guitarists on CZcams know that they have achieved such success or have managed to compose the anthem of a generation? Exactly, nobody, because being virtuous is not everything when you have a passion for music, it is not a competition of who plays faster.

      @elialeonetti2253 Před 6 lety +4

      Lolo Kozlov i've been playing guitar for 3 years and all i can say that it surely is about the feels you put in the playing,but having technical skills makes putting down your feels in a more precise and (possibly) enjoyable way...basically what i'm saying is by acquiring skill you can also become more expressive and the listeners can enjoy your music from a different,even more personal,way. I never said you need tons of skills or training to write music...

What these "shredder" guitar players will never understand is it isn't about how intricate or technical you can play the guitar. That doesn't make it in the biz. It is about being able to write and create melodic songs that sound good. That is what creates a hit and sells records. Kurt Cobain was a phenomenal song writer and deserves credit where it is due.

      Soumyadeep Chandra I have to absolutely agree. he created a whole sound scape. i'm at about the twenty year mark with playing guitar and i realized last night the abstract aproach to the instrument without a knowledge of theory and all that, in his case was where the magic took place. he played the guitar looking for not knowledge of how others have done it but to express himself through each calculated note he played. that is an artist imagine if painters were still painting only bible scenes as they did in da vinci and rembrandts time. that would get pretty fucking stale. another supporting idea is that he was right handed, he of course played lefty. I think in some context this helped him approach the instrument in an uncoventional way. I MISS HIM AND HIS ABILITY TO STIR SHIT UP, I MISS HIM ON SO MANY LEVELS, TOO MANY TO MENTION.

    I think people miss understand kurt cobain. When they say he is shit. The guy invented a new sound and style. How many of your idols have done that. Before nirvana mainstream rock was mass produced manufactured trash with spandex and stupid solos that mostly sound the same yes their was some good music to come out of it but most of it was other bands jump9ng on the sunset strip band wagon so if the guy wants to chock his neck. Then he will its his style and yes he was taking the piss oit of van halen.

    actually kurt in reality wasn’t that bad though. he liked keeping it simple and thought soloing and such wasn’t that cool at the time and just focused on what he liked
