Thank you so much! This helped me when I took it apart to check the condition of the spring, and the whole shabang came apart. Found another tutorial to help me wind up the spring, just search for "How to rewind a pullstart spring".
Thanks for posting this. My recoil was not engaging, due to corrosion and a damaged bolt. When I took it apart the spring became un-wound. The nut holding everything together was rusted and snapped the shaft off. Your video helped me put everything back together. I was able to rewind the spring starting from the outside, I initially coiled the excess from the inside and used a tie strap to keep it from getting in my way.
i got a 94 polaris indy xlt 600. my drunk cousin snapped the pull cord :P i thought i had fixed it but the dogg wasnt coming out and catching the crank. i had the spring on wrong. thanks this vid helped me out, and saved alot of time and frustration.
Excellent video - this gave me the exact information I needed to get my recoil back together. I don't know if it is critical but mine would not work until I placed the clip the way it shows in the video. Picture it as a capital "A" so that the flat spot makes the crossbar. When I did this, it worked perfectly. Thanks.
I bought a new polaris atv, it didn't come with a pull start. But the earlier models did. So I am buying one for it. Your video will help me put it together.
@jcas30 tbh its a pain to rewind the recoil its mostly trial and error. the last time i had to wind one i did it slowly winding it tightly then clamped the end with needle nose vice grips. then set it into its holding place then relased the clamps. hop this helps
this is cool. i have a 1997 Polaris Scrambler and the pull start stoped working. it gets stuck and doesnt want to pull. is it hard to remove the casing on it? i wanted to get it ready for the summer and get a new pull start replaced. did u ever take it to a deelership to get a quote on replacing entire peaces that failed?
it was very easy to take off getting a new spring isn't expensive. maybe 10 bucks. as far as a dealer most charge a minimum of an hours labor plus parts so between 85 and 125 before parts but not hard to do yourself. maybe an hour of your time. I'd say give it a go yourself and if you can't fix it. take it to a dealer or a service center. hope this helps
You are using the wrong kind of starter rope. Most of the stuff you find in home depot is a strand or filler core with nylon woven around the outside. You should use a rope that is a solid nylon weave with no core. The cheap stuff works until the outside wears through then you are SOL.
