- After over a year of planning (and a few years of it getting cancelled,) we finally made it to Oktoberfest! Follow along as I share my experience getting a table with no reservation, explore the grounds outside and more!

So cool. I was there w a girlfriend in 1970. We found seats across from a nice German couple. Ends up she's rich - owns 2 license plate factories - and had a second home on the lake in Starnberg. We stayed at her house for over a week and she drove us all over Munich and surrounds to show us the sights. Wish I could thank her again, now.
Looks like a blast. It reminds me of the Minnesota State Fair with a HUGE beer garden.

Thanks Shelby, I attended the Oktoberfest in 1985 & 1986 while stationed in West Germany 🇩🇪 at the time and Enjoyed,Drank,Ate and Drank even more! I was only able to ride the Ferris Wheel 🎡 to take pictures. Now at 65yrs.young and after seeing your video and I’ve watched about 10 of them. I would like to go back one last time! I went for opening day in 2017. Started at the Augustiner tent. They had a parade inside the tent at noon to start things off. Later, I went to the beer garden outside the Schottenhamel tent. Made some new friends and had a great time.

This is something i have on my bucket list
My last Army duty assignment in Germany was in Augsburg (approx 60K from Munich). My only regret was not attending Octoberfest during that time. I’ve never been a fan of beer, but still kick myself for not having attended this incredible celebration.
I did Oktoberfest in in the Löwenbräu Beer tent......und est war sehr gut....
Looks like fun, fun and beer go good together.

We tried to make reservations for four. Even though I speak German, I learned that you need a minimum of 10. If you go before lunch, you can sit, have a beer and enjoy a meal! We did. Prost!

Last time I was there in 1972 (I think) they recorded just over 1 million visitors through the gate in the first week... roughly 10,200 per hour EVERY hour.. Think I'll buy some German brewery shares...

My daughter and friends got in early and grabbed a table that was not reserved. An older German woman came over and literally pushed them off the table and yelled at them. The table was not reserved. She was "holding" the table to then sell the spaces. "Authorities" sided with her. Despite that negative incident they still had a blast.
I did it back in 1999, had a blast. Didn't care about the table.
wrong tent, in the Löwenbräu you will meet very few people from Munich or from Bavaria
How do you pay for the beer?!
Everyone says it is so hard to make friends with Germans. I guess all it takes is some beer! Looking forward to this is if I get the job I want in Germany!

During the weekdays, table reservations are not required. I've attended Oktoberfest for 5 years and I've NEVER had a problem getting a table
Northern German, here. I had to research it because I have no clue but couldn’t believe. Turns out: Some Australian people invented this drinking out of shoes thing on the Oktoberfest a few years ago🤢

Which city would be the best to enjoy October fest?
I've only experienced it in Munich, which is the real deal Oktoberfest! I do know in the U.S. that Cincinnati has a pretty amazing one too. It would probably depend what you are most interested in doing + seeing!
Sampede to the water hole so you can pay 15€ for a beer when you can buy the same beer for 2€ at the local store.

Wait 4-5 hours for beer, not for me.
Chugging beer at Oktoberfest is actually not allowed. People do it to rebel and flaunt the rules. That is part of the reason why they are cheering. This also made big news this year in Germany there were so many instances of it happening with fewer people getting punished. This was also one of the least visited years, since it was the first one in two years. It was not like security or the owners did not witness it.
The Beer Festival disguised as an Amusement Park disguised as a Beer Festival.
I went a looooooong time ago and was stunned at the size and scale of the location where Oktoberfest is held.

Nice to see the video but would've been better to have some actual audio. Without it, it didn't seem real.
I was in that tent at a table in the same area as you in 2017 and had a great time. I was an older attendee, 47, and along with my coworker we hooked up with a group of younger 20 somethings who are native to the Munich area. I have to say the perspective from a local is a little different on the chugging and shoe nonsense.
1. Chugging a liter, or mass, of beer is moronic. That is something done to become stupidly drunk and get attention. It is not a German behavior. I was in the tent for over 10 hours and drank 5 mass of beer, never having more than a mellow buzz and never getting sick because I, like the locals, do not drink like idiots. Whenever we saw someone doing this you could tell they were going to crash within an hour or so and they were inevitably the ones we saw cut off or even ejected.
2. Standing on the benches is perfectly fine and the norm. When not eating we spent hours standing on the benches and singing with our beer in our hands. Standing on the tables is the behavior of a barbarian and not allowed.
3. Chugging from a shoe... As my new friends from Munich said when they saw this, "he is not German." Somehow this became a thing and it seems to be overwhelmingly done by American kids, especially those who have already chugged a mass. Morons.
It was a little embarrassing as the only unruly behavior I saw was from American kids there becoming ridiculously drunk as fast as possible. That is not Octoberfest. Overall it is the most fun I have had at a party ever, all the better for the wonderful people I met there.
Since when was 47 an older attendee in 2022 I was 70. I sat at a table with people that were much younger. Since the Hofbrau tent in popular among Americans I went to other tents because I can meet Americans at home.
@@horsepowerandtalk1033 I can assure you that 47 in the Hoffbrau tent on that Saturday definitely made me older than the overwhelming majority of people there. Of course there are many people older than I who were there but most were not in the Hoffbrau tent. As you clearly know, they each have their own flavor.
I really like beer and drinking it out of shoe does not make it enjoyable at all, and top it off with paying 13.50e for toe jam flavored beer.

Kind of silly but interesting I don't like to drink maybe that's why I find it silly maybe if it was baseball tickets. I would understand it.
I would like to attempt to constructively criticize this video in the hope that it may be of use in future. It is my opinion, that instead of saying that it was not possible to understand what was happening because it was in a foreign language, that it may be more useful to delete the chill music and allow your audience try to hear and understand what was actually being said on stage. Doing so would offer us the opportunity to try and figure out for ourselves what was going on, and at the same time enjoy hearing the real thing. This video is very appealing visually - well done! but it lacks depth because it does not allow any authentic audio. Thank you for allowing me to comment.
