If you're not familiar with Mariahs version at all. then you may not understand what is happening. Mariah sings this with a full choir. Morissettes track here has the choir. Shes not skipping the words. As is customary in many Gospel arrangements, the choir sometimes sings the lyrics while the soloist adlibs and riffs to the choirs lines.If Mariah's version is a fave (it is personally for me) this rocks your socks, if not YMMV (your mileage may vary). You did point something out that is noted in the comments on the original video.This was uploaded by her Father from a fan cam. He said she forgot her in ear monitors. As an almost 3 year fan of Morissette, this was the first performance I ever saw of her ,and it hooked me for life. I had never heard a vocalist ever be able to pull off Mariah's version, and those beautiful open belts just ended me! Three years later, two plane rides to see her live ,and a member of her official group here I am! Thank you for featuring her on your channel again!!
It was a great performance. Yeah that makes sense about the arrangement. I think though if you don't have the choir present, its probably best to simplify it and sing the main melody instead, even if you can have it with the backing track. But I'm probably just a bit picky because I really like this song. It would be awesome to see her live! That would have been an awesome experience :)
I guess those that actually watched MC’s rendition back then actually get it. But, what do we know? Only that we have listened to MC when she first came out and bought the xmas album back then. Mori is a vocal technician. Now let’s imagine a current mainstream artist doing it. Idk 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve seen Mori live and I know what she can do. All love though!

This version has a lot of runs and the hardest one to sing. That whistle tone is so strong that it reverberated in the space.
Every singer has its own style how they sing a song, and I dont see any problems how mori sang this song. #spreadlove

Filipinos probably hear O Holy Night in different versions a million times in their life time probably because Xmas season here is so much longer than in any other countries. That version she did was not common for singers to sing, they prefer the traditional version. I'm pretty sure she can sing the version you wanted to hear. There is nothing serious in that mall tour, just promoting and having fun.

I totally agree with your comments actually! You expressed your thoughts very politely. I'm a huge Morissette fan and recently Mariah as well, so guys don't come for me; I think this particular Mimi vocal arrangement is more of a vocal showcase than anything. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but as Caleb reiterated, the beauty in Christmas songs is the message of Christ, and a Savior born. To gloss over the message would be missing the heart of Christmas.
P.s. Morissette actually sang O Holy Night for Christmas 2020 for a Church service and it was far more solemn.
P.p.s. I actually love Morissette showcasing her vocals. I think she's one of the best vocalists ever. Any listeners of "Unbound" by Marion Aunor feat. Alex and Morissette? It's currently my Mori jam, haha.
Dude what the !?!? Some singers can bring their whistle down to a D6. A B6 is not exactly a low whistle note. Not many people can go up to the 7th octave in whistle. The clarity of it and the way she jump from chest to whistle without stopping is amazing.
I have never seen nor heard somebody sing Oh Holy Night like that, ever! Went home last year and that's how I first heard Queen Mori! Went to this very mall in fact, and believe me, this is built as a mall, not for sound. Yet, her version on this Xmas song now is legendary. Ow, been listening to her daily morning & evening and I can never get tired of her. SHe's always showing you "the other way of singing" ANY song! I'm telling you, her DNA is made of musical notes, not some strands of protein...!

Watching random reaction on Morissette rendition of this song. I agree on your comment on where she didn't sang the lyric to show off her voice power. But I read random comment/explanation on why she didn't sang those line. The reason is that she sang it in a way like she's leading a choir, like from a choir where the main singer back up by other singer *from how I understand from one of the comment*.

But for me, only the good video quality that's lacking, and it would've been completely christmas-y. You can say ypu cannot entirely feel the lyrics because of course it lack some of the elements to make that happen like what a music video does. Like for the fact whe she did the whistle part the crowds voice interrupted the essence of that melodious and harmonious vocal.

Cut Morisette Amon some slack. She’s in the mall singing to entertain the masses. Not everyone is well versed in the English language. It’s not our native tongue. So the best strategy that she could do is to smile, be excited throughout the entire performance and lift the spirit of the Filipino people who’s inside the mall to celebrate Christmas Season. Save your lyric in depth to yourself. She’s singing alone in a small stage set up with no earpiece, having loud background, exhilarated fans who wants to hear her belting a Mariah Carey Version of the song. Initially the crowd wants her to do vocal gymnastics and anticipating the whistle note that’s expected from her fans. At least try to put yourself on her shoe. All she wanted to do is to put a smile on everybody’s face, send positive vibes, set up a good mood, and share that Christmas feels to her audience.

Tbf she sang "hear the angel's voices" in the other choruses, so if you're being a bit more generous and view the chorus where she only sings "oh, hear" in the context of the previous choruses, it doesn't really take away from the story in my opinion, as it's already implicit what she's telling you to hear. But that being said, I'm not too big on lyrics to begin with (unless it's truly unique and has a genuine, personal story behind it), and on top of that I'm not even remotely religious, so I might be less critical on this, lol.
