  • Only a few seconds after exposing a water surface to sunlight, vapor appears.
Although the water remains at room temperature, it vigorously emits steam.
This mysterious phenomenon is made possible with novel nano particles developed by NIMS.
This is promising for the desalination of seawater because of its highly efficient conversion of sunlight to heat.

Very interesting! But given that we're dealing with nanoparticles, do they get carried away with the vapor? And if so, what effects will titanium nitride particles have on the environment in the long term?

That is an interesting thought, I wonder if they could show once all the water is evaporated the weight of the Nanoparticle left afterwards compared to before to show how much was gone, we might have a good estimate.
