Here are a background intro and lyric to this song:
"Xiao He Tang Shui" AKA "Rippling Brook" is a famous Chinese Folk Song, has been labled as "the Oriental Serenade". It takes place in rural-folk region of China, where local peasants would call out to their lover in the form of singing.
This song origanlly depicts a woman calling out to(missing) her lover; LiNa decides to re-interpret this song in an almost haunting but beautiful sade way. LiNa's husband rearranged the instrumentals and added a new melodic segment to it (The lyric-less vocal part)
The whole song has only 5 sentences of lyrics, therefore it is a test of the singer's ability to use vocal techniques to create "rippling" but diverse effects.
    Lyrics:
The moon rising above the mountain is bright, oh so bright.
Made me think of my loved one, deep in the mountain.
Sheer breeze swirled up from the mountain
    My love oh my love
Do you hear me calling you?
The moon rising above the mountain is bright, oh so bright.
Watching the moon I think of my loved one
Sheer breeze swirled up from the mountain
    My love oh my love
    Have you heard my calling?
    Calling for you.
Please like my comment to bump it to the top so more people will see the background of this music.

I think GONG Linna (the singer) and her husband (the Germany gentleman repeately showed in the video) had worked together to rearrange the song - adding the drums and the sustain singing parts, etc.

BTW, about the drums. This is the traditional type of Chinese drum, called “Gu”. In the history, warriors will play this kind of drums during battles, the sound of the drumbeat excited warriors; it is still used nowadays during dragon boat races, each team will has one drum on their boat and has their own beat, inspire the players. Chinese folk musicians often use this kind of drums when they want the audiences feel the kind of passion, the power and feel deeply inspired. The drummers can played different sound by beat on the different part of a drum, often with a little bit of dance motions. Similar kind of drums are also used a lot in other East Asian countries’ traditional musics. Here is a video of a Japanese Enka, “ABaReTaIKo” (means Fiercely beat the drums) preformed by my favorite Enka singer Ms. Sakamoto Fuyumi

Hi there, thank you very much for your update! Here's some information about this song.
A Brook Flows (a Folk song from Yunnan)
    Singer: Gong LinNa
The moon rises bright and clean, bright and clean
Reminding me of my love in the valley
Fresh breeze goes on the slope, on the slope
My love, my love, my love
Do you hear me calling your name
    (Drums come in)
The moonlight shines the hill, shines the hill
Seeing the moon and thinking of my love
Fresh breeze goes on the slope, on the slope
My love, my love, my love
Do you hear me calling your name
    (Vocal)
The moon rises bright and clean, bright and clean
Reminding me of my love in the valley
Fresh breeze goes on the slope, on the slope
My love, my love, my love
Do you hear me calling your name
Some more: The drum used in this video is a Chinese bass drum called "Da Gu" in Chinese. By the way, the instrument used in Tan Jin's video is called Erhu (and the special vocal you talked about in TanJin's video is a form of Beijing Opera ).

THE VOCAL LEXICON yeah and we also use many other musical instruments in folk songs as well, like bamboo flute(笛), Xiao(箫), 琵琶 etc. i think Ms Gonglinna chose the drum because its a love song and the chinese big drum is perfect for representing masculinity.. so it really depends on the content of a song

About the drums, this particular base drum is one common instrument in traditional Chinese music. Made from bamboo and leather, was used by military, the empire and folk thousands of years ago, you can see it still being used in today's religious ceremonies. The strong connection to Chinese tradition makes this drum a common choice of rhythmic instrument for folk songs.
Gong's best live performance (to me), you should check it out... Not only her vocal but also the music itself which was composed by her and her husband. The stage design was gorgeous, it's just one of the most epic live ever in Chinese music history.

Amazing you could tell this is folk music. But traditional Chinese folk music usually has minimal background instrumentals. This is more infused with classical music as well.

    • @lyfiatea
      @lyfiatea Před 5 lety

@frs 12 there's isn't really a team named that. That is just a humorous term (or meme, if you will) we use to call performers that generally have received academic music/dance training, got 1st or 2nd in prestigious national competitions (the academic ones instead of reality shows) and then entered top-level national art departments or at least come from such background. This term contrasts them with pop singers because, for one, they usually perform for the biggest events and the army, somewhat like an international namecard, unlike bands that go on tours or idols that you can 'follow' and get to see very often. They rarely appear on 'smaller' stages though that is changing as some of them got approval to appear on reality shows, like the one in this video. Secondly, they used to be deemed boring & uncool by young people but due to the said reality shows we discovered they *really are* frigging good singers so now there is a trend to appreciate them as well as older music.
As for recommendations there are already a lot floating around in this comment section as you know we Chinese are a bit crazy for recognition from foreigners 🤦😂 Tan Jing, etc. are all good.

She is the Walking Ancient Chinese Singing Techniques's Book she learn the lost Singing techniques one by one from the fragile-home(the singing family)fragile mean very little of people know how to singing with those techniques, btw she can also sing pop but I just want to say she is indeed A Chinese-Music Grand level teacher. Before we know what is western music technique or Pop,the Chinese also have amazing music techniques but due to the old fashion thinking of Chinese people Girl are not allowed to sing because the folks say no man will marry a women who pleasures other man or people you know right? And I remember in medieval time Europe or west country, women are not allowed to enter stage like opera singer in the old time only man can sing opera. Correct if I'm wrong.

Mrs.Gong definitely is my favorite artist in music. But not all Chinese folk music uses this type of drum. We have an abundance of traditional instruments to accomplish one piece. And even the drums have a lot of differences. Folk music generated from different regions and ethnical minorities tends to use particular sets of traditional instruments, including drums.

I understand, but still there was no amplification in the European theaters and opera was developed to project to the back of the theater and also over the orchestra, so it had to achieve a similar effect, but by restricting the overtones and creating a more narrow bandwidth tone, as far as I understand it.
