  • VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng delves into her own family history to remember that time the British Empire was one of the worst drug pushers in history and got China hooked on opium.
Empires of Dirt is a show about Europeans getting rich at the expense of everyone else. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng uncovers the ugly history of the European colonial empires they don’t teach us in schools. Countries around the world were looted for their treasures, people were oppressed and exploited and European powers relentlessly profited. The far-reaching repercussions of colonialism are all around us, from our financial institutions to the food we have in our cupboards at home - and it’s about time we took notice.

I am not a patriot, because I hate exploitation of any kind, but unlike you, delusional Yankees, I do insist on being objective about things and calling out BS.Fact is that the Brits, were the only empire, who actually had positive humanitarian aspects to it, as well as committing atrocities, like any other empire. All should be included, for a balanced, modern perspective and the fact that these details are suppressed, is what has led to the victimisation culture prevailing in black communities, in the US(which is deliberate and counter-productive to African-Americans succeeding) and also has led to the prevailing distortion, of the goals of the original feminist movement, which have lied about Britain pioneering a dominant male patriarchy, as meaning delusional modern women seek to gain what a man wants, instead of what women traditionally wanted, back in the day and the state has changed The legal parameters to Support them, at the eexpense of men, e.g. divorce law
At least the Brits hegenomy was built mainly on self endeavour and innovation, e.g. with being the pioneers of free society, with separation of the monarchy from Parliament and the pioneers of human rights in ratified legislation and free law courts, all of which the US system, the entire Anglosphere and every modern constitutional system, is based on.Whereas The Americans became a superpower, by staying out of 2 world wars and fighting proxy wars, both times to make European powers, indebted to them, by originally "only" selling munitions and raw materials, then manipulating conditions for the dollar being a reserve currency and financial parameters favouring the US market following Bretton Woods.

The British merely sold opium to Chinese merchants in Canton, who then were the ones who distributed and pushed the drug within China. The only reason the British did this was the balance out the unequal trade policies imposed by the Qing empire which demanded that Chinese merchants buy no goods at all from the western powers, only sell to them. Turns out that opium was the one thing these Chinese traders would defy their emperor to get their hands on, and they became massively wealthy from it, addicting their 'countrymen' to something that had been used in China for centuries already.

Hong Kong Island itself was ceded in perpetuity after the first opium war, but British territory later expanded under the 99 year lease in 1898 to include the entirety of what we now call Hong Kong. This video is otherwise really good aside from this oversight with regard to the timescale of British conquest of Hong Kong, given that this actually later caused a dispute during handover negotiations over whether or not the new territories and kowloon (leased in 1898) could be handed back while the UK kept HK Island itself.

Great vid however when you say Britain, you're implying the government.
The British east trading company (a private business) had control over India and pushed opium into China.
In fact most of the British empire was built by this company and when they eventually ended, the Government then slid into its place and took over.
The company was certainly backed by the British government but they are more guilty by not regulating the east trading company.

    SOME POINTS OF CONTENTION:
    1. Opium was a medical panacea at the time, you could get opium openly in Britain, USA, China in any pharmacy - and it was actually a good cure to some ailments.
    2. The vast majority of opium users in China were NOT addicts, and opium was used very widely. You could expect a pipe to be offered when entering a Chinese home as a welcome, opium was basically what weed is turning into across the world.
    3. China quickly turned into the largest producer of ITS OWN OPIUM SUPPLY. The foreign imports had the best product, but the Chinese were not some poor weaklings.
    4. The Anti-opium movement had TONS of white missionaries.
    5. By banning opium, China got a ton of its population hooked on morphine and heroin.

"I'm not Chinese, but from my people's Experience with "white missionaries", they only served to Sneak their way in, weaken you with "Christian Values" & STAB YOU IN THE BACK."
Except, you know, the ones who were against opium.
Morphine and heroin started as medicines for opium addiction and were deemed more "pure". all of this disregards other parts of the world(India, South East Asia, Turkey) where opium was eaten long before any Europeans came about.
