      Pretty well known fact actually. But they have 3 divisions. It's not which state is the best. That's obviously Penn. But they have 3 divisions.
      California meanwhile had Zepeda...a guy who stuck Beau Bassett and he's the 5th seed in his HS State Tournament. They have just insane depth. Think about ALL the HS kids in that state from ONE division?
      I'd go California, New Jersey, Penn, Ohio, and Indiana. But obviously when Penn or Ohio has two kids ranked top 10 in the state finals...that particular weight isn't going to feel "easier" than other states.
      On balance though, Cali is the toughest to win a title.

      There are many examples of 3 and 4 time CA state champions getting beat by 1 and 0 time state champions from PA, so it's not right to put so much weight on one example when it goes both ways. Zepeda will likely not by a 5 seed after moving back down to 138, I believe he was #5 at 150 pounds, not his natural weight class. PA has so many good wrestlers that even split between 2 classes, the majority of years their AAA state tournament is tougher than any in the country. On average, they have more nationally ranked wrestlers per weight class than all other states.
      As for me: 1) PA AAA 2) NJ 3) CA 4) Ohio AAA 5) IL

Three divisions by school size and the top placers from each division face each other for one true champion so we have both the division one, two and three with one being the big school State champions and the Allstate champion.

  • @dvdly
    @dvdly Před 5 měsíci

    In addition to number of divisions available for a title, you should consider the respective requirements to advance from sectionals, regionals, and semi-states, where applicable. It is conceivable, and has happened in many cases, that a solid top ten wrestler can't even make it to the state tournament because of a stacked regional. In Indiana, for example, only the top two guys advance from sectionals and regionals, but three get to go from semi-state. After I won my sectional and got eliminated in the regional, I remember going to what would have been my semi-state to watch several guys I had beat in the regular season competing, including a guy I had pinned. So, yeah, you could say it was easier for him than for me.

    I live in Texas. When I was going through high school, there was 6 school divisions. if I'm remembering correctly 6A was the big schools and they had their own division. 5A and below all shared a division. (most schools under 5A in Texas don't even have a wrestling program). I think it would be better to have a single state tournament despite division for competition, however, A majority of the big schools JV teams would be better than most 5A and below teams. A bit more fair to keep them seperate, but the 5A state champ and the 6A state champ would be in interesting match. Maybe regionals into state should be a state tournament? I went to one of the better 5A schools in Texas. The year before I started high school, my small 5A school managed to beat the power house school in Texas (Yes it was Allen home of Beau Nickel.) in the state tourney. When they split the divisions up, my school dominated the state tournement. I almost went to state, and I honestly had no business even making it to regionals. xD

    Just watching this.
    Oregon has 1A/2A 3A 4A 5A and 6A
    6A is the biggest, your school has to have more than 1000+ kids or so
    The 1A/2A division has an 8 man bracket for the state tournament lol. 6A has a 32 man bracket. But there’s guys who are barely over .500 still.

      The same reason football has tons of divisions. Massive schools with tons of athletes will be much more likely to beat a team from a smaller school with fewer options/resources.

    When all states are pit against each other at folk nationals, Illinois is consistently the best performing state. Flow wrestling even has data that they’ve aggregated and published proving this. Illinois needs to be taken more seriously in the conversation of competitive wrestling states.

    I have a topic for a video. NJ has been shuffling the district teams with sole purpose of getting more kids from the north Jersey power schools to advance to states. For instance they had Anthony Knox come way south to wrestle at RVRHS this year in districts. There’s a reason they’re called DISTRICTS and regions. They’ve shuffling them up so there’s no more local rivalries. It sucks!!!!
    I understand how the better schools feel about their guys getting knocked out, but again, it’s called DISTRICTS!!!! To me and many others it’s fn bull. Kinda cheating also, but the powers that be are up north Jersey.

    • @neilgunns8391
      @neilgunns8391 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Ben should be against this crap since he realizes what it means for kids from lesser programs to make states.
      It just sucks to go watch a bunch of schools you don’t know. The rival schools in the districts was much better a few years ago. They’re shuffling it yearly

      There are 13 or 14 weight classes in HS. It would have been 13 then. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the score. I did find the year. It was 2000 and Vestiva Hills who still dominate Alabama. I couldn't find the score but I found Blair beat them 73-3. Apparently they were missing 5 starters. So it makes more sense that Nazareth crushed them. I didn't realize or remember that part.
