      @@searose6192 the average cost for an acre of land in the US is $3020 USD. It's cheaper if you find one with an ugly, old building, because the owners don't want to pay to move it.

    Y’all’s journey speaks to my heart. It’s very real and purposeful. I have nothing against people who got youtube money and built a big ol farm but that’s not relatable for me. I wish you CZcams success as an income source but you did this in an obtainable way without having that first. Your channel is encouraging and I appreciate your time and willingness to share your experiences with us.

The extra information that you provided about the development and building process was very interesting. Have you ever considered looking at turning the “swamp” area into a pond? You two did an amazing job at transforming your property into a working homestead.

  • @crystaljohnson9354
    @crystaljohnson9354 Před 11 měsíci +7

    You did a great job! Suggestion for the swamp: if you have the time and money later, you could empty it of the brush and build a pond that you add some catfish to. They will grow and populate so you could homestead fish as well. You also then wouldn't have to worry about flooding as much. My grandparents live in Iowa and built a pond on their property. He only adds more baby fish once in a great while and they are able to catch and do some amazing fish fries with the whole family

    We're in NE Ohio doing something kind of similar. We bought our 7 acres in 2018 and we've been clearing back the mostly wooded property bit by bit while working 60 hour weeks an hour from home 😅 I always said I wanted my property mostly wooded so I can choose what to keep and what to clear but I have this FOMO of wishing I could have started projects years ago that we are just getting around to today.

    Meant to be.
    The average walnut tree starts to produce nuts at an age of 8-10 years. However, there are cases in which walnut trees start to produce about 15-22 lbs. (7-10 kg) of nuts at an age of 5-7 years. Most commercial walnut orchards reach their peak production level at an age of 30 years or more.

    Your back pasture is better because of the swamp and accompanying forest.. Slow steady release of water and nutrients into it..

    I heard tell that you don't want to plant any food plants around the walnut trees. Because if you don't pick up after your tree and leave left over nuts on the ground as they break down they will leach out toxic chemical. Look it up to see what you can plant next to them.

    • @jenbear8652
      @jenbear8652 Před rokem +1

      It’s called juglone (sp?) and it’s not just what falls from the walnut (or related trees). It’s in the soil around the roots too. You can look online to find out what plants are juglone tolerant. For example, I have black walnuts growing wild on my property & black raspberries & pawpaw are also growing wild right next to them. So you just have to look up what to plant near and what not to plant near walnut trees.

    16:49 I agree hard work is absolutely necessary…..but so is money, or at the very least local social network of people willing to give you extra supplies for free.

    • @searose6192
      @searose6192 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@morethanfarmers Yep. That’s the way to do it if you don’t have money. Hard work + helpful people in your life. I also think, things tend to go more smoothly when we are moving in the direction God wants us to go, often with unexpected blessings to help us on our way (like some of things you guys mention happened at the start of your homestead like getting your first cow for a very low price and your land for 50% off the asking price.) Meanwhile fighting against God’s will is often more tiring and a rockier road with things going wrong. Of course even the right path has challenges, but they can be overcome.
      I am really enjoying your videos, and bless your family!

    have you thought about clearing the swamp so it can be more water than brush, setting up a gravity filtration system that uses natural methods of cleaning the water, letting it feed back into the swamp, and then having a relatively clean water reservoir for the wildlife and also potentially for piping around to other things. Could also plant up the area to make a little grotto with boardwalks and have a nice little nature walk area or something? probably frivolous, but if it's not too expensive it could be fun just to do. could probably also set it up to have the cleaned water push the dirty water over or through something so it can be sectioned off. kinda like a water treatment plant made out of nature and using nature to filter it. idk, just a thought i had, lol.
