Maybe one of the most beloved songs by Iron Maiden, Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the album Power Slave. This was a special for Burch and you get to hear his impression of the spoken word during the interluded.

We were reading the poem for my British Literature class. It was in the syllabus at the beginning of the semester and I didn't know at the time the Maiden song was based a poem and I exclaimed to the teacher that Iron Maiden had a song named this. Like she knew what I was talking about. The album had come out only a few days before the start of the semester. So when it came to reading this in class the teacher allowed me to bring in the song to play for the class. I wrote the lyrics down and the teacher made copies for everyone in class. The teacher actually got into the song and liked it. Great teacher.

I did the exact same thing. I saw them on the Powerslave in Germany. Motley Crue opened for him. Dear GOD it was loud. Iron Maiden played so long that people were leaving from sheer exhaustion. They brought Eddie out. Freaked me out. When I finally said to myself. I need some air. I walked out, we're all sweaty, ears ringing, Iron Maiden was still playing.

Literature class my senior year, we metalheads knew more about Samuel Taylor Coleridge than all the "smart kids." (Thanks to this song and Xanadu from Rush.) Our teacher was flabbergasted. We told her ROTAM was a Maiden song and we convinced her to let us play it in class. Once she heard it, she was even more flabbergasted. Good times!

As a Frenchman, I can say that Bruce taught me more English than any of my teachers. I can't believe it was almost 40 years ago... How lucky I was to have Iron Maiden as the soundtrack to my life. The quality of the musical compositions and lyrics, the power and mythical duets of Adrian and Dave, the bass line of Steve, Clive and Nicko... There's a before and an after to Iron Maiden, and I'm betting that 200 years from now (if mankind doesn't self-destruct by then) there'll still be curious people to marvel at their genius.

received this album for Christmas of 1984 and after getting my license in late Jan. drove 2 hrs. to Greensboro's Coliseum with my younger brother and two of our friends to see Iron Maiden on the World Slavery Tour. 7th row on the floor for Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry Tour (I Wanna Rock / We're Not Gonna Take It) opening up for Maiden. Steve Harris's right hand is still god-like to me in terms of his strength and stamina to play these bass riffs for hours each night, night after night, year after year. He seemed super human. I love the moral to the story. I love the theme of redemption. Musically, I love the way it "opens up a can of whoop ass" following the slow section as Dickinson's vocals soar. The guitars' solo harmonies and Harris following them note for note on the bass is just phenomenal. My first ever rock concert and it was an experience I will never forget.

What an absolute masterpiece! The summary of the the story in the lyrics along with direct quotations make this song. But the music follows the lyrics and adds to the drama like an opera, especially the climax when the rain comes and Bruce lets out that bloodcurdling scream. This is a prime example of of why the Irons are the GOAT

This is my favorite _Iron Maiden_ song. 🤘
    It's a masterpiece.
    I _love_ the interlude.
The pacing of this song is phenomenal as well.
And I'm like this guy in that this band got me into both recent and ancient world history.
Our English teachers also wondered why us long hairs were so interested in those subjects. 😝
P.S. And what is _truly amazing_ is how Bruce incorporates all of those very complex lyrics into the rhythm section of the song! And I dare you to find repeated lyrics! At least in the way they're worded, anyway; I don't believe there are any!
P.P.S. I was one of the lucky few thousand that attended that _Powerslave_ tour on those four days at Long Beach Arena, where they taped _Live After Death._ I was only 16 at the time. 🤘

The story is based on Cooks third voyage to the Pacific.
One of crew members left life at sea and turned to teaching. In one of his class was a young, C K Chesterton who was enamoured with the stories of life at sea. The poem was inspired by those stories.
The spoken bit was a passage of the poem.
I worked in the Mitchell library and the story was confirmed by an academic fellow who was researching for his English language doctoral thesis

This was Steve's Maiden voyage (yeah, I did it. I made a pun out of it) into progressive music, weaving an epic song from a classic poem. They would venture down this road as well on some other tracks on this album and Somewhere In Time and finally in Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, their first concept record. This would serve as inspiration as well for countless progressive metal bands like Dream Theater to forge their own career paths in this vein. It's why Powerslave will always rank highly on my favourite albums of all time.

    • @emanemanrus5835
      @emanemanrus5835 Před 8 měsíci

Well, I agree this rendition of the poem is a "progressive" song, in the sense it's long and does not show an usual structure. But a progressive attitude was ever within the band since the 1st album, think about Phantom of the Opera, and so on. "Killers" itself has a lot of "prog-ish" moments, songs with strange structures, technical interludes, timing & rhythm changes... And the rest is history.

Yes Burch. I can relate to your memories. I´m born 1970 (I reckon you are too), so when this came out I was 14. And, surprise, Iron Maiden got me interested of english as a language and I learned it basically by reading song lyrics from my heavy metal albums, including Iron Maiden of course, and translating them to my native finnish. I started to write short stories and poems of my own, my english teacher was surprised about my vast and erm peculiar vocabulary and I explained that it may have something to do with this hobby of mine... Those were the days. But, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner is still my favorite Iron Maiden song, it is just a complete song and brings Samuel Taylor Coleridge´s poem wonderfully to life !
And good point to the lyric video, I know this by heart after thousands of listens during nearly four decades, but for the first timer, it´s hard, there´s a lot of text and Bruce sings sometimes at a machine gun speed.
One final point, a funny thing, I have AKG K240 headphones on. Now how odd is that 😊

I saw the Powerslave tour in Chicago back in '84. It was incredible!
I would have love to see the live version. But I understand why you went the lyrics version route.
Oh, by the way, my grandfather was named Birch. Spelled different, but you two are the only people I've heard with that name.

One thing I love about Maiden is that the songs live and breathe after they are recorded, Maiden perfect a lot of the songs in a live environment.

This is my fave Maiden song, followed by The Trooper and Run To The Hills. I like that you did the studio version first, it allows her to focus on the music and lyrics, without the distraction of the awesome shoe Maiden puts on live, that can come later to give the full impact of these legends. Other story songs I would love to see you introduce her to is Rush - 2112 (I know, it's long) or Rush - Xanadu (based on the unfinished poem by Coleridge).

I know what you mean when you say you lost your mind going to a maiden concert shortly after your 15th birthday. I went to my first concert being just 14. The main act was KISS, but they were supported by a (in Germany at that time) unknown band......
It was my first time seeing Iron Maiden (1980). I was infected and until now (luckily) never "healed".
