Because he doesn't care about money. He is picky with his roles and mostly he chooses movies that appeal to him most.

"This is one of the most underrated, humble actors around". I agree with that. I haven't yet watched this film, I'm going to, but Viggo seems like a very humble actor who just does his job and does it well. I like how he isn't in the spotlight.
Watched this movie on netflix the other night, what a performace this guy gives. Had to look him up afterwards and he was nominated for best actor but lost to DDL's There Will be Blood.

Was about to comment the same, Daniel Day Lewis won the Oscar and I think it was deserved but Viggo also deserved it, dont think anyone could have done a better job, he went all in and nailed it
This is why he’s underrated
He’s humble. His acting doesn’t draw any attention to itself. He’s one of the least showy but yet interesting actors out there.

Viggo is a intelligent cultured man.
Took me awhile to find this movie. Film was fascinating. A view in a world you don't see...nor would you want to. Viggo does an incredible job, especially with the Russian language. And his intensity in the part communicates the sense of brutality and danger of their world. He is truly an excellent actor!

It's so funny how gregarious and loud his characters play but then when he starts speaking and his normal voice, you'll swear in a stack of Bibles that's not the same guy.

There was certainly more to the story that could be told. I don't see why it could not be pursued. Perhaps a different studio? Geez, 2018 would be the year to strike the Russian mafia movie iron while it's hot. A missed opportunity otherwise. What a shame.
That part about Russia iron sounds funny when you know that torturing with the hot iron (electric device) is a common thing in Russian mafia
