    Brilliant will try this if ever needed I've had old cars that were like this but luckily never mot failed on it, I don't suppose you have any suggestions for a belt that keeps twisting around but when you take it off it goes back normal and then you put it on its normal after driving for 5 mins it's twisted and sticking into me again Its driving me nuts

    Notice this is a Saab 9-3 your demonstrating on. I had one of these new back in 2003. There was an issue with slow belt retraction on this model. The fix at the time was to replace the whole seatbelt for a new one. This was done under warranty, and I don’t know if it continued to be an issue on later 9-3’s, or if they resolved it by fitting different belts from new. Maybe they didn’t want the mechanics getting dish pan hands by using your method! 😂

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Před rokem +1

      IIRC the belts were changed during 2003MY. Probs for this reason.

      @@CycloneCyd After that, for model years 2004-2011, there was a different issue: The driver's side retractor was subject to breakage and, at least in the USA, there was a safety recall. Manufacturer Recall Number15027 NHTSA Recall Number14V318 "General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2004-2011 model year Saab 9-3 Convertible vehicles. The automatic tensioning system cable in the driver's side front seat belt retractors may break, causing seat belt webbing spooled out by the user to not retract. If this occurs, it will become obvious to the seat occupant immediately."

    I’ve tried it but it doesn’t seem to be working, had acetone and window cleaner on the retractor as well as soaking the belt. If they pull it out the door backwards then it’s not working but if they hold it out like it was going to be plugged in then it goes back mostly. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Pull belt out and spray with silicon both sides, job done!

    Another good way to future proof after you’ve cleaned it, bit of furniture polish on a microfibre does the trick.

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Před rokem +3

      Furniture polish or silicon spray is a good stop-gap fix to get through the MoT but long term it damages the threads of the belt weave and _can_ stop the belt performing properly in an accident

    And for fraying seatbelts run a lighter or a soldering iron down the edge just don't burn chunks out of it or you'll be buyig new ones!

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Před rokem +1

      I couldn't buy-in to that. Belts are designed to 'stretch' in an accident whilst decelerating the torso. This is achieved by the threads in the weave slipping over each other in a controlled fashion. If the threads have been 'melted' together along the edges, this function is lost. This is the exact same reason why frayed edges are an MoT/inspection failure.

      @@CycloneCyd
      Yes I agree for the same reason you don't use cut or knoted lifting straps they can lose 50% of their integrity with the smallest cut in them.
      I was meaning removing the whispy bits you get on the edges. If your belts are damaged to the extent you are melting strands together then you should replace them.

    This is a design flaw a classic case where the swedes , overdesigned the slot width on the slot for the belt kinda dumb actually. I got sandpaper and opened mine up a bit now it works better. Give it at least 1 mm. It works better. Does not have to be so narrow that a bit of dirt causes it to not function. Should have been a recall. Shame on saab...

      @@CycloneCyd I hear you syd I'm from Canada, got a chevy traverse with 300,000 km on it it's fine. . Never had the belt issue. They probably make them snug so they don't accidentally twist and jam and don't come out at all. Then people can't use them .May be a dept of transport design reg. For seat belts. Some of these things are regulated with safety "laws".
