  • The inflation garden is growing, maybe too much. The squash plants may have been a mistake for the size of planter I have, time will tell. I've got some brown leaves on the tomatoes but they still look ok. Cucumbers are really slow, maybe that's normal? Stay tuned...

On your squash comment in the description, I'm doubtful any kind of squash is a good idea in a container. The plants just get too large and with all that leaf surface area they'll suck all the water out of the container daily. Are the tomatoes dwarf varieties intended for container culture? I do my gardening in ground, and I have trouble imagining any full size versions of the plants you're attempting doing well in a container, except possibly the peppers.

Yes, the squash may have been a mistake... And the tomatoes are big ones too, I can't remember but I think maybe they were called beefstake? Last year I had the little tomatoes and they did well but this year I wanted something bigger. Well I may just end up with one giant squash :). What do you think about the cucumbers? First time I've tried them also and they seem really slow. They are the smaller ones that the package said I could let the vine grow up a stake, which would be ideal for my setup.

@@HWDsouthDIY The particular variety I have experience with that I would try for container cultivated cucumbers is Little Leaf. It's a small semi-bush cucumber that produces pickling cucumbers (they can be eaten fresh). The leaves are small and the heavily branched vines get to about four feet long. It's not a hybrid so you can save seeds if you like. At least you can if the flowers are pollinated--it's also parthenocarpic so it can produce fruit without pollination. It has some disease resistance, though not as much as modern hybrids.
The key point is that it's a small plant. Although cucumbers are probably a better choice than squash, I probably still wouldn't do them in containers myself. Still... I don't do a lot of container cultivation for garden crops so perhaps you'll end up knowing better than me quite soon. 🙂

I think the cucumbers are the small one's but like you said, I'm going to learn a few things very soon :)
