i did something really similar but I changed the corresponding 5th gear on the main axle because the third on the counter still looked good

Thanks for video- Have a Q on my 2000 YZ250- In short- bought it blown up, full rebuild- shifts great through 4th, but 5th is a struggle, but goes in. Then false neutral when trying to shift back to 4th. All gears look great, put 3 new shift forks in to see if that was the problem, though they all looked good. When cases are split, hand shifts the same, but needs help going into 5th. Drum looks good but feels faintly rough sliding into 5th. I've had it apart 4 times polishing & looking. Baffled. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

They don't shift good like you'd think when not running. Long as everything is good and no wear it will be fine once running

@@thetwostrokerebuilder Thanks so much for responding!! I realized I didn't provide all the info I should have - I bought the bike blown up- so no idea what it shift like before. I have had it apart 3 times, (first was complete rebuild) I've rode it all three times and still the same issue. Polished the drum, etc. oiled it well on re-assembly and hand checking shifting, When I replaced all the shift forks and put it back to together, it will now go into gear 1-3 normal smooth, 4th pretty easy, but 5th only with some work (sometimes by hand with no clutch disengaged) (It has never popped out of gear while riding) When trying to shift out of 5th, it will go into false neutral most of the time and not to 4th. Then when bike is shut off, it seems to shift back into 4th ok. Could it possible be the shift drum? visibly it looks and feels fine (no burrs or scratches that I see, but it doesn't seem to want to make the climb up the cam into 5th without help :) I sure appreciate you taking the time to respond, it means a lot to me!

Hey man. I just got a 2021 yz250x.... they have a wide ratio 5spd where as the regular yz250 has a close ratio....I wonder if the X suffers from this? I'm guessing for the non racer/trail only rider it shouldn't be an issue.

Ya I wouldn't worry about it probably be fine for you. Keep up on maintenance with clean oil is all

@@marcialquinones5683 yes they sure do..I gotta x and had it open twice with the same wear..come to find out the shaft bearings were bad..so perhaps if I would have replaced them the 1st time it may have only happened once...but if it happens again I will never get an x again..though it's a great bike

Is this for 3rd gear. My 250 will ride fine until I reach the powerband
