  • How does a ten year old yacht remain at the forefront of one of the great ocean race classics? With her distinctively narrow hull, Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI has beaten all comers for line honours in eight out of the last ten Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races. And now her original builders McConaghy Boats have completed her most radical modification yet, with the goal of maintaining her winning ways. Watch the evolution of this concept from idea to reality.

    I love it. It is essentially we wanted to move the keel and mast further back - so we cut the front half of the boat off and made it longer, just because it was easier.

    Love the video. Bob Oatley is a guy totally committed to winning the Syndey0Horbart. He's all in. To cut up a boat that has won eight times and the last three in a row is not something many would not even consider doing. I'm a big fan. Go Wild Oats. Good luck to all sailing in the race.

      +MYTHIC901 I'm sorry that is incorrect, Wild Oats XI has only ever won 4 Consecutive Line Honours in a row. Beating the previous record holder after 59 years held by Morna in 2008.
      Wild Oats XI was built & launched 2nd Dec 2005.
      She went on to win line honours as previously stated until 2008. 2009 was taken out by the New Zealand Super Maxi Alfa Romeo II raced by a Neville Crichton. Wild Oats XI was second across the line followed third Icap Leopard.
      Wild Oats XI came back again in 2010 to win Line honours, short lived in 2011 lost to Investec Loyal who took line honours. Bouncing back Wild Oats XI took Line Honours again in 2012 - 13 & 14 .. Never has a yacht of any description won more than 4 in a row. This is why Wild Oats XI is celebrated as the most Successful Yacht of all time.

    Thanks for uploading this...I'm thinking to do the same thing with my boat. I want to cut my Catalina 18 in half, so I can extend the bow to make it a Super Maxi 100 footer. Wish me luck...

    I'm guessing the new bow and rest of the hull aren't just glued along that join line? How on earth is it made strong enough?
    Is the inner carbon skin blended forward and the outer rearward (for example)? What is the resulting strength - 100% of the original?

    • @paolobramucci3609
      @paolobramucci3609 Před 4 lety +2

      Little Star that would be my understanding based on similar repairs (e.g. bow replacements) and modifications of others boats, such as the IMOCA 60 and the VO 65 class boats. Not only do they strive for no loss of strength, they want a seamless fit too.

    What they should have done is split the hull down the middle and narrow the hull, then add some cross beams, and had to smaller hulls outboard of the center hull, basically turn it into a trimaran. One would get far more speed and performance. Just kidding... looks like a great keelboat.

    Its amazing technology but that's the problem , ask how it sails once the on-board generator runs out of fuel it cant sail without it therefore its not a true sail boat , its a stink boat , all these Maxis are . Seems a bit stupid really when the original concept of sailing is just that, not reliant on a motor, just sail power, in this case Wild Oats is reliant on a generator on board . All mechanical systems onboard Wild Oats XI are powered by a continually running Diesel generator, excluding manual backup systems, making the boat is entirely dependent on the auxiliary. This limits the boat's autonomy as it cannot be sailed once the fuel is exhausted.
    What happened to sailing boats???True sailing yachts dont even have motors.

      It isn't reliant on the generator as it also has manual systems. You can turn off the generator if you want to. The question is about how far you allow people to use them in a race and cruising people nowadays are probably unable to navigate without electronic aids. This has resurfaced once again in the 2018 Sydney Hobart as Wild Oats turned off their AIS and should this be allowed ?

    Please get rid of the horrible autotuned music. It makes the video almost in watchable . Natural sounds are always best. This video is way over produced. It would have been much better with explained reasons why when and how everything was done instead of some slick production.
