Cooking Nyama Choma with an Electric Pressure Cooker (EPC)

Wairimu Njihia, demonstrates how to prepare the Nyama choma in the house, using an Electric Pressure Cooker (EPC).
Nyama choma is Kenya's unofficial national dish, meaning barbecued meat in the Swahili language. The meat is usually goat or beef, served roasted throughout the country, from roadside shacks to fine restaurants. It is often paired with local beer and side dishes such as ugali.
In this video, Wairimu shows that it is possible to prepare the popular dish, fast, affordably and in a smoke free environment for your family.

Ksh 5.25 means Ksh 473 per month (if you cook 3 times a day) and you still haven't accounted for other things like lighting, shower, electronics etc. you'll end up paying upwards of Ksh 1500 per month! Power is still very expensive in Kenya...LPG is actually cheaper. Electric pressure cooker's main secret is steam and uses very little electricity - the use of this steam is what makes it a great energy saver, but as you can see, power cost is super high!

Have you ever boiled githeri on a gas stove or jiko. It uses makaa of ksh 90 yo cook once, it uses ksh 70 of koko fuel to cook once. For gas I haven't measured but it is like you refill 13kg cylinder every month. For a family cooking with this pressure cooker on electricity you save more than 50ksh every time you cook. This translates to 15days x 50ksh = 750 per month and 9000 per year conservative estimate. This gadget pays for itself in a year. (cooking githeri, beans, kienyeji chicken, lentils, meat, matumbo, etc)

Why do you need to include the cost of shower and lighting in your analysis. For you to get an accurate comparison of the two you should only compare the cost of cooking with LPG Vs cooking with electricity . cooking with that pressure cooker is way cheaper considering that you will have to refill your small meko gas at a cost of about 1300 every one or two months depending on the size of your family
