Let's learn how to play Steve Hackett's song Horizons from the Foxtrot album by Genesis. I play a Takamine Classical nylon string Guitar. I teach it with 2 camera angles that give you maximum visual references. Teacher: Dean Wolfe (Fyi: Bloopers at the end of video)
Erata: there is one thing i spoke but didn't mean when teaching the harmonics saying about the G string ' the same note' but meant the same 'string'...sorry for the confusion

Incredible lesson. This song was (part of) my introduction to Genesis, a neighbour loaned me Foxtrot back in late '72 / early '73 when it was the latest LP. After a couple of days I gave it back to him. He asked me what I thought of it. I said I thought it was a bit weird. He asked me how many times I'd played it. "Right through once and a few other bits twice". He gave it back to me saying it would be worth another listen and he didn't need it back soon. And of course after another couple of listens something clicked and I was absolutely hooked. Foxtrot remains my favourite Genesis LP along with SEBTP which I bought the day it came out. I must also learn to play this song. Many thanks.
Cool. Some of my favourite music I didnt like first time around as well.
Hi Dean, I can’t thank you enough for posting your Horizons tutorial. I’ve loved this song since I was 14 and now at 53 after many viewings and much practice I can play it. Cheers mate!
Awesome!
I just want to say thank you for this amazing video lesson. I’ve been a guitar player for 12 years, and this piece of music is what first inspired me to want to play guitar, but I’ve never been able to figure out where to start on it. Now, thanks to you, my guitar dreams have come true, because you made perfect sense of this masterpiece. Thank you.
You’ve prepared a great lesson of this beautiful guitar piece. Thanks so much for posting it !
You're most welcome!
Just working on this now after learning all the great Yes lessons you put out..this is a tough song to find with this kind of quality breakdown and explanations...been wanting to learn this for quite some time, many many thanks again!
Superb tutorial. I have been playing a version of this for years which I learned from wearing out my vinyl album. It is great to fix all the bits I was doing wrong. Thank you. Love this track.
Hi mr. Wolfe. It's taken me something close to two years but I'm finally nailing it. You've successfully cleared out a lot of question marks from the top of my head that i got from the tabs. And you're so human. I appreciate that. Thanks again.
Thanks Flavio
Really got to say how good this video is.....so many stabs in the dark on here where this song is concerned. This one really hits the target....can't thank you and Mr. Hackett enough!
Amazing lesson. I hope you have time to do more beautiful Prog acoustic guitar songs. I never thought that I was able to learn this complex tune. But the way you broke it down to simple pieces explained tone by tone made it possible. I am almost there at the end of the song. Thank you very much. One of my other favorite songs is Anathema Untouchable part1.
Superb Dean and thanks for your sharing your fantastic teaching ability:)
Excellent lesson. Great breakdown and detail. I had never thought of learning this piece until I saw your cover of it and remembered what a great piece this is. So glad you did the lesson, thanks.
Awesome.
THANKYOU! This was one of the first fingerpicking songs I've learnt and you're tutorial is wholly responsible, I really appreciated this lesson! :))
Thank you so much! Best tutorial for this song there is out there :)
What a great lesson. It's been a while I've been trying to learn this song from tabs and now that you showed us all the tricky parts, now I can play this song right. Thanks a lot Dean!
Awesome, glad to hear!
Remarkably amazing tutorial! Well done, Dean!!

Thank you for the lesson my friend. A wonderful song i always wanted to play. You help me a lot.
That's great to hear! Take care
Merci du tuto , la leçon est parfaite
Je l'apprenais avec la tab de Ultimate Guitar , mais je n'arrivais pas à passer correctement la section 2; avec le tuto, c'est fait !
Ça fait plaisir à entendre
Tanks!
Welcome!
Can you do a king crimson...? Moonchild or one of the acoustics off that 1st album?
I'll check them out
I could play this song perfectly for years. Stopped playing it and can only conjure up a few licks from it. Gonna relearn it, thanks to you. I just leaned Blood on the Rooftops. I can play Mood For Day. That one is pure muscle memory as it was the first song I ever got down. One day I’ll tackle The Clap.
I relearn from my own videos haha, muscle memory does fade
@@deanwolfechannel Yup! I made ONE tutorial video. It’s me teaching the Gypsy Jazz song Bistro Fada the main theme from the film Midnight in Paris. I too went back to learn from my own lesson haha. That song propelled me down the Django rabbit hole for 8 years haha. I love your channel but I’m having trouble finding the lessons among so much other (excellent) content! Perhaps you could create a “lessons” or “tutorials” category. Learned Long Distance Run Around from you today! Thanks! I’ve been playing it wrong for 30+ year. Can you play The Clap? It’s my Mt. Everest. Great channel by the way…you are a sublime guitarist and musician. Much appreciation from Maryland, USA. PS: in 1988 I got to hang with both Steve’s in Los Angles at their GTR show! Ahh the memories!
I'll sort out the lessons into a single playlist and link it here very soon. Lucky you, my two fave Steves
@@deanwolfechannel hahah. I thought you’d be impressed with that one. GTR at the Wilturn Theater Los Angles 1988!

all my lessons so far, playlist.
Also, could you do a video of the intro to Blood On The Rooftops off of Wind And Wuthering?
I have that here...czcams.com/video/PmKAbnIrhrI/video.html
An excellent lesson, thank you for posting it. Though your instructions are superb, a novice like me would benefit from a tab. Don't suppose you have one for this piece? Thanks again. Mark
at this time no tab, sorry
I don’t play guitar , I never will, but the few first notes make me weep, I’m a Genesis fan
why you choose this camera angle?
it's what you see when you play, so when you look at the screen it's the same view. Also you can see where the fingers are with more accuracy.
@@deanwolfechannel noted. its kinda odd to me as left handed guitarist to look at this angle. thanks btw!
Gosh, I never thought of that!
@@deanwolfechannel no worries, keepup the good work!
I don't want to hate, but you gotta show the chords, I can't guess them, otherwise I wouldn't be here
You mean you want to see charts or tab? If you’re watching on a phone it could be harder to make out... yes some chord graphs would help. I think I did this lesson pretty fast paced. You have to pause a lot I guess. Maybe I’ll do another version lesson some time a lot slower,...
@@deanwolfechannel ok that'll be really nice, thank you.
not bad but ... it's not 100% accurate. Look at how Steve plays it.
I strive for general accuracy but I'm not a stickler. Generally, if you strive for that you will go and research and learn the song all on your own. Thanks for watching, guitar equals happy...
Olivier it's Dean's interpretation, it may be easier for some players than the authentic version. I often change things on songs I learn , not just for ease (but that's a reason) but also note-for-note leaves no room for creativity and individuality. 😎🎸
@@robercoli6136 I understand what you mean but to me it's not a lesson on horizon by Steve Hackett anymore. It's a lesson on Dean's interpretation. I would rephrase the title.
PLEASE ..BEFORE ALL THE SONG AND AFTER THE LESSON...
NOW IT'S TOO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND YOUR TEACHING!
The full play through is linked in the description box as my 'cover 'version. Please watch it
Thank you friend
No problem!
