My Allowance As Speaker Was N25M, Salary, N400K - Dogara

  • Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara on Wednesday said that his total allowance while he was the Speaker of the House was 25 million naira while his salary was 400 thousand naira.
The clarification Dogara said was necessary following public misconception that members of the National Assembly earn huge salaries and allowances.
Recall that Yakubu Dogara was the Speaker of the 8th Assembly.
While speaking at the two-day House of Representatives open week celebration in Abuja, Dogara said it is important Nigeria’s allow their Representatives to work and limit the financial demands on them.
According to Dogara the misconception of huge salaries and allowances by Nigerians has given the National Assembly a negative image where they are called thieves even at public fora.
“While I was Speaker my salary was 400 thousand Naira and my total allowance was 25 million naira, I told my accountant to open a separate account for the allowances and I never for once took any money out of that account everything that came into that account was used to cater for the needs of constituents.
“My accountant complained of the level of demand on the account and I told him if the money there is finished, borrow, and when money comes it you return to were you had taken money from.
“I am saying this so Nigerians will give their legislatures breathing space and know that the narrative is not true about members’ pay.

Can you imagine, 25M allowance when the Naira had a huge value… Nigerian politicians are a huge curse to the electorates.

shut up! Is legislature not a contract job? Almost all Reps and senators I know are even selling their houses to support constituencies. My constituency has over 4 million people. Imagine a mere N25m for our rep in one year. Nonsense!

@@stellaosuji8799 And how many people are in his constituency? Madam please tell me! Some of you are not thinking. What Dogara is telling you is that he better get paid 50,000 naira only but with no person in his constituency than to be paid N25m and have 1 million people in his constituency. If no one is in his constituency he gets his 50,000 naira to spend. But with N25m and a constituency of 1 million people, it average only 25 naira per person. Almost every legislature I know runs the office in debt because the money is way too small to meet constituency needs. It is common sense but many fools in naija will never understand it.

@@ck-sl3ktJust listen to yourself! What is the primary responsibility of a Law Maker? Are they required to execute constituency projects when they aren't the executive? Are the Law Makers really doing a part-time job? Do you know what a part-time job is? Are they not supposed to receive Sitting Allowances instead of salaries? Unless you are telling us that a Sitting Allowance that is supposed to be moderate, since the main purpose of getting into politics is all about service to the people, has skyrocketed into the tune of 25M. The Law Makers should concentrate on their jobs of law making and thorough oversight while allowing the Executive concentrate on its own and not dabble into project execution under the guise of constituency projects.

Arrant nonsense. The logic here is that the governors are bleeding the nation more than the National Assembly, so nobody has the right to complain. N25 million is a lot to earn by a public official in a month, in an economy like ours, and to say it is even too small as this man is insinuating is an insult on our collective intelligence. Not to talk about the so-called constituency projects, which is a shameless looting of our national treasury.
