Man.... i first stumble upon this man back in 2006 or 07 and all i gotta say is... thank you sir, for imparting your knowledge to a generation that needs it. Please make more videos.
I'm so lucky that my parents allowed me to make up my own mind- I've never believed in any gods (fairytales)... Thanx, Greg- good to see you're still around & kickin'! ;)
You can always tell how serious, and what kind of mood Greg is in with how high his eye brows go at the beginning. The higher the brows, the happier, more enjoyable the video will be.
This is the real quality stuff from Greg Solomon we know and love, I really didn't think this video was too long since you needed this long to get as deep as you did. Very enlightening
I love this. Instead of yelling and not listening to each other, like it is on other videos, here, it is a simple respectable discussion. Now I realize that there actually are rational and respectful people still on Earth.
Basically the point I am trying to make is that Americans have a tendency to avoid what is unknown to them. Not all do, there are a few who strive to learn. But typically (especially in the case of religion) they are rather close minded, even if they are accepting, it's moreorless "Do what you do and I'll do what I do" instead of "Hey, I am interested in your culture, may you please tell me a little about it?"
@GregSoloman i enjoyed your video, as an atheist you've made me think i should take the time to read different religous texts so i can be more informed on my decision and able to vocalise my opinions. I also like how you are not out to bash peoples beliefs. Many thanks for your efforts from dublin.
Nice to see you back. As for me, well I'm with George Carlin when he talks about religion BUT I do believe in, and also think everyone prays the same God.
This really was a great, well thought out video. It's a shame that the comments will be a flame war, and that it will be disliked by so many of the deeply religious, who refuse to open their mind that far.
@illustranimator The problem is not so much the teachings that are ascribed to Jesus, most of which are sound (though not all), but rather the fact that a group of people began worshiping the teacher and developed a religion centered around that worship. Also, you don't have to use your caps to periodically "shout" a word. It simply detracts from what you're trying to say. If your stance or argument cannot stand on its own merit, then "shouting" certain words won't make it any more valid.
Greg, I don't mean to nitpick at all and take my word for it when I say I am a tremendous fan of your work and your unique, logical style. But you didn't mention the Sikh religion or the Jewish religion. Have you read the scriptures of both religions, and if so, I wouldn't mind your thoughts on them as I have a friend who is Sikh, and it is very prominent in Northern India, and an alternate viewpoint on a monotheistic religion.
I believe that if people want to bellieve in fairy tales like St. Nick, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc. and are not harming anyone, let them do that. However, when they knock on your door and try to convince you to step into their side, that is when becomes a problem.
I am a Christian, and I don't fervently believe that other religions are wrong. I have many Hindu and Muslim friends, and I embrace their diversity and enjoy learning about their religion. I don't believe any one religion is right or wrong. Heck, God might not even exist, but I believe he does. We'll find out when we die.
Mr Soloman, really enjoy watching your videos and if I could make a suggestion and especially in subjects such as these you should smoke your pipe while your giving your presentation. I do have a few comments in regards to your views. I do agree with how kids are brought up to believe certain religious beliefs from there parents as I did but I also believe as you become an adult you should research what you have been taught as a child validating those beliefs and truly making them your own.
@bogbog0118 "confused?" Evidently. "faith is one of many words that can have different meanings" Any word can have different meanings. Any word can have any meanings we assign to it. Yet thats just a "trick", since under the bottom line nothing would really change, since the same meanings would be just represented by other words.
If you take requests can you do "Freedom" "Civilization" "Fiat Currancy" "Poverty" "Population growth" Would love to make a long list and just keep going ,but would love to hear your thoughts on any of the above.
I really enjoyed this video, Greg, I wish more people were as intelligent as you are. My favorite bit is where you talk about not agreeing with "drilling" a certain religion into the mind of a child. I don't agree with that either. My parents raised me to be a good person and gave me the freedom to choose my own religion. It took me to the age of 15 but I found my religion all on my own (which happens to be one that actually states prosthelytizing is somethingi you shouldn't do, go figure ;) )
@ATDFXN Small error but I botched my two choices. You can believe in Jesus in both choices, but it still doesn't change the dilemma that Matthew 5:17 and Hebrew 8:13 make as to the significance of believing in him.
One last mention. Hear are some books that I don't think you have in your library yet and they have all been wrote buy previous Atheists. Two by Josh McDowell: 1) More Than A Carpenter 2) Evidence That Demands A Verdict. Three by Lee Strobel: 1) The Case For The Resurrection. 2) The Case For The Real Jesus. 3) The Case For Faith. These writers are well educated credible men.
Your video is awesome. Very well thought out reasoning. I'm an atheist and while I don't know for sure if there's a god(s), I haven't seen any real proof, so I'm not going to believe in one/many; exactly what you said. I'm just tired of people saying that god is real because they have faith and they have faith because there's a god. That's just very circular thinking. Thank you for pointing out for the ill-informed that the founding fathers were NOT Christians.
All I have to say is that if the Bible talks about all of these books, written after the Bible was written, then how can you accuse the Bible of not being true? You can't, for the very reason that you have all of these books on your shelf.
@JaamesAmos Just because he stops making videos for a month doesn't mean he's dead. He's not THAT old. He looks only late 50s mid 60s, and if his claims about his careful eating habits are correct, he's not dying anytime soon (barring any randomly occurring incident).
Problem with that is the English Bible talks about the Red Sea. However it is much more likely that it was the "Reed Sea" if you look at where Moses would have been leading the Hebrews during their escape. (Note I am a Bible believing washed in the blood Christian so this is not an attempt to disprove a Biblical story.)
God's presence is accepted in every religion, and God has given every human to think and has shown every human the paths and has also nominated the right one with the series of it's messengers and even if you consider any religion perfect, first think positively correct and what after all i have found is that Islam is the most Peaceful, respectful, ethical , logically satisfying and true religion of all and christianity was in its time considered as the right path and was known as Islam of that time, but every messenger of Allah has to believe on the every next messenger of Allah which is the basis of what Allah has told us in order to be remain on the right path. From me, my friend, if i invite you to come enter Islam will not depend on where you have born but will depend on what you think and how you fight to inner you for accepting the truths and so do i invite to be under the shades of peace by joining Islam.
@AgentGhost What we want is very relevant to what is fact and can change the world around us. Science only appeals to human senses, and Religion rather tries to go beyond our senses. It does not appeal to our emotions, but regularly asks believers to set them aside so that people can coexist peacefully. And if humans are an image of God, it may be that emotions existed before the universe, also, this entire universe may have been created to appeal to a certain emotion, the first emotion. Love.
gotta agree with you that people who tell others that theyre damned if they dont believe are damned themselves. that shows too much pride. pride is a great sin.
Too often early programming is not only carried into adulthood, but an adult who rejects the religion of their childhood thinks that it represents ALL religions. Yet Christianity and Islam (and their various sects) are the minority amongst the world's religions in that they are "religions of conversion" that believe ALL others must believe as they do. Most religions are about personal spirituality and one's own relationship to the Divine/Cosmos/Whatever.
@ATDFXN the laws are held to a moral standard that allows for a civilisation to remain peaceful if people just ignored these laws completely do you really think we could have ever been this successful?
@DavidJohnSeyler A: Source, show it. B: Even if he says there's a strong 'case' that doesn't mean he said "I'm not atheist now." C: It's not an Atheist "movement" it's simply a belief. D: Have you ever thought that everything exists in this finely tuned state, because it has to? If it wouldn't work any other way, then it wouldn't exist. What if it weren't finely tuned? Would you then use that as your argument?
Btw, I'm also fascinated with religions in general. I love studying them and I think the myths and stories and experiences that lead to these books are also fascinating. I just don't understand how any human being can stand there and say, "I KNOW xyz about death/god/life/the universe, etc." I have baptist relatives who tell me I'm going to burn in hell... I just basically get a good laugh out it.
I disagree with this. I was born and raised an Orthodox Christian on account of my Russian heritage. It was drilled into my head constantly as a child that the Bible is the writing of God and Jesus is my saviour, so on so forth. Now I do not currently worship Christianity nor do I believe Jesus is my only saviour. I do however believe in a God, I don't believe in collective religions. Everyone's take on their religion is different.
Thank you for reading, I hope you have a better understanding of how reliable the bible is and some better knowledge on Jesus. END Footnotes: 1: Josh mcdowell 2: Josh mcdowell 3: Wikipedia 4: Wikipedia 5: Josh mcdowell
The only drawback if if there was a creator God, how would people know what his will is? from vibrating atoms, from rocks and trees? from blinking signals from far away stars? and if God did decide to talk to us from these things, who would believe us? for those who believe that there is a God their God must be a mute or something, someone who cannot express himself as the person that he is, nor could he intervene in the affairs of men, (that is if you also believe that God is such a mind of intelligence) begs the question, if God created the world and made man set upon it, would he not lay down the rules and then provide a way to know him? else why bother?
Unfortunately Mr. Solomon, I cannot finish watching your video. My dog, who is living in our Christian home, is quiet while we pray and a real darn good judge of human character, growls incessantly while you are speaking. Since I cannot finish listening to what you have to say, I bid you adieu and hope that you live by the commandments and beatitudes of our Lord.
@bogbog0118 "why the onus of responsibility isnt" Responsibility about what? Did you mean onus of proof? Proving something is quite difficult. As well, usually proofs ought to be provided by those who make all these positive claims - just like those who claim "theism". "religious people are atheistic about gods of other religions" Sure. Yet did these people really "prove" that those other gods wouldnt exist? Of course not. In reality they just lack belief (in these additional deities).
Religion is a fascinating subject. I have also studied a few of them, though not to the extent you have. Did you ever have the chance to see Bill Maher's "Religulous"?
He said "If you were born in the United States and raised here...ODDS ARE that religion will be Christianity" Of course there will be exceptions to the rule. Come on now.
Great video! All the things you mentioned, I tried to convey to my peers for years, and they don't seem to try to understand... Or maybe they simply can't, because of those childhood fillings.
Also many are mistaken about Adam eating an apple from the tree. Did a lot of researching on this topic and found out it wasn't an apple that Adam ate off the tree. It was a cherry that Adam ate.......................................................................... Eve's Cherry 😁
I wish you would have given your views on people who seem to put no effort into fixing problems in their lives because they think God WILL fix it for them. For example, people in dire need of medical treatment who receive none because of their devout faith.
@sich5648 (this is anecdotal so I cannot currently verify it, but I feel the idea still stands) I am reminded of an interview I believe it was with the people behind South Park. This was shortly after the Richard Dawkins episode and they stated that Richard Dawkins is the dumbest smart peron they know of. Even if the ideology of erasicating religion came to pass, people would find new things to fight about. The Trojan War of legend was fought over love, for example.
@tomthemd See Tom, that's the nice thing about the Bible. People can accept whatever they want as literal, and discount whatever they want as being just an allegory. Thus, anyone can make the Bible say what they want, so as to readily make it conform to their preconceived opinions and world view.
@bogbog0118 "theists are expected to prove their beliefs" Id say they are. Yes. "Atheists should be expected to prove theirs" No. Because in general atheism is about lack of belief. Only so called strong "Atheists" make a positive claim, and indeed, they have their own axioms allegedly proving their position. "expected to explain" You are not expected to "prove" your lack of belief in pixies and fairies... "faith in your chair" Thats not "faith". Thats belief based on testable experience.
The point is, anybody can come up with their own rules for what constitutes ethical behavior, but why does anybody else have to adhere to it? Why should they care about maximizing human wealth/health? That is just YOUR idea. There HAS to be an absolute source of authority that transcends human opinion. This isn't to say you have to accept God as that source, but you have to offer one. or else you are just writing your own 'bible' and telling people to 'do what this book says or you are wrong'
Mr. Solomon, are you the authority on what you say or is this just your opinion? In other words, is what you are saying true? How can you prove that location is a result of what someone believes? I was not rasied in a Christian home, yet I am a Christian because I realize I have sinned against God and need the forgiveness of a Savior. Jesus Chirst is not exclusive based on location. He offered His love and life for all men and women who have broken or violated God's commands.
@ATDFXN The claim that the writers of the Bible were inspired by God is unverifiable. However, with man made legislations, you can usually track down the origin of a law, right down to the person who came up with said law. That said, I think that christianity (and many other religions) have good moral teachings in their principles, but they should not overrule everything else because they are supposedly inspired by divinity.
@bogbog0118 "repetition is not an argument" Your argument remains invalid. You are confusing the definitions of different concepts of "faith". You keep claiming that lack of belief itself is faith, however, such a statement doesnt make sense whatsoever, just as follows from the provided dictionary references.
@GregSolomon Hi Greg. You talked mostly of people who were indoctrinated during their childhood. What about converts? What reasons do you think they have and why are many of them even more firm in the faith than other believers or even extreme? Didn't you rule out religion implicitely by saying that people should decide for themselves when they are adults while you claim that there are no proofs for any of the religions?
@illustranimator explaining things. If your understanding of reality is so skewed for you to not understand simple argument synthesis then there is no reason for me to argue with you. However I have the tendency to argue those who are ignorant. I do not need pray to your god, because there is no reason for me to, he does not exist in the realm of reality. I also do not need to prove the negation of his existence because I am not attempting to prove that he would. Watch the video for onus ofproof
There are over 24,000 manuscripts of the bible.(Manuscript is a handwritten copy of something)1(That’s ALOT!) Each displays the accuracy of the words we read today. No other religious text has more, or better, manuscript evidence.2 Events thousands of years in the future are described in detail and confirmed by archaeology and secular history. It is Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, however that is the greatest evidence. If you accept eyewitness testimony concerning any
We were not told that we will go to hell when we were young! We were told of this almighty God who created the world, created man kind, created everything! He sacrificed his only son to save us. So he can forgive everyone for our sins! That is the truth! That is love! God is alive!!! He loves us! God is alive!!!
Btw, big misconception that Christians believe, or bible teaches, that the earth is only a few thousand years old. It never mentions specific times like that anywhere in the bible
Man.... i first stumble upon this man back in 2006 or 07 and all i gotta say is... thank you sir, for imparting your knowledge to a generation that needs it. Please make more videos.
***** Greg is the man, but he has passed.
+Bryan Scheeler how do you know that?
He's put up more videos.,,.
Good to see you're back. Pleasant surprise to see a new Greg Solomon, video in my inbox.
This is the real quality stuff from Greg Solomon we know and love, I really didn't think this video was too long since you needed this long to get as deep as you did.
Very enlightening
I love this. Instead of yelling and not listening to each other, like it is on other videos, here, it is a simple respectable discussion. Now I realize that there actually are rational and respectful people still on Earth.
ironically.... amen
Basically the point I am trying to make is that Americans have a tendency to avoid what is unknown to them. Not all do, there are a few who strive to learn. But typically (especially in the case of religion) they are rather close minded, even if they are accepting, it's moreorless "Do what you do and I'll do what I do" instead of "Hey, I am interested in your culture, may you please tell me a little about it?"
i could listen to him for hours. I'm sure he can talk for hours about almost anything!
Awesome Guy!
@GregSoloman i enjoyed your video, as an atheist you've made me think i should take the time to read different religous texts so i can be more informed on my decision and able to vocalise my opinions. I also like how you are not out to bash peoples beliefs. Many thanks for your efforts from dublin.
Glad to see you making videos again Greg. Really do miss the pipe though.
Rest In Peace Greg!! You Surely Are Missed..!
Greg's Alive And Doing More Videos..... Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
Greg,
Nice vid. I am noticing some people with multiple commentaries who seem very fluttered by a pretty plain video. Keep it up.
All belief is formed the same way and can be form no other way. "We are convinced by logical evidence of a truth".
Have you read the scriptures of both religions, and if so, I wouldn't mind your thoughts on them as I have a friend who is Sikh, and it is very prominent in Northern India, and an alternate viewpoint on a monotheistic religion.
good to see you back greg. must be nearly 4 years since i saw your first vlog, youve still got it.

wait...there's no santa claus?
Mr Soloman, really enjoy watching your videos and if I could make a suggestion and especially in subjects such as these you should smoke your pipe while your giving your presentation. I do have a few comments in regards to your views. I do agree with how kids are brought up to believe certain religious beliefs from there parents as I did but I also believe as you become an adult you should research what you have been taught as a child validating those beliefs and truly making them your own.

"confused?"
Evidently.

a delight to see you making regular videos again, been far too long!

Religion is a fascinating subject. I have also studied a few of them, though not to the extent you have. Did you ever have the chance to see Bill Maher's "Religulous"?
@CubbieBear1980 You're forgetting the part where Greg Solomon has read all that already. Like George Orwell wrote, 'his mind CONTAINS your mind'.
Great perspective.
He said "If you were born in the United States and raised here...ODDS ARE that religion will be Christianity"
Of course there will be exceptions to the rule. Come on now.

Greg needs a podcast
When we are true muslims, we don't give up our lives for it as he said . Islam is a way of life before that it is a religion.
@ATDFXN as i said he explains it simply in the second video how our social nature instills certain rules to survive or we would have died out
Amen!! Good stuff.
thanks for the video greg, something to think about...
@sich5648 (this is anecdotal so I cannot currently verify it, but I feel the idea still stands)
I am reminded of an interview I believe it was with the people behind South Park.
I don't believe in a god nor I deny the existence of a god. I do believe in being and trying to be a good person.
@bogbog0118
"theists are expected to prove their beliefs"
Id say they are. Yes.
"Atheists should be expected to prove theirs"
No. Because in general atheism is about lack of belief. Only so called strong "Atheists" make a positive claim, and indeed, they have their own axioms allegedly proving their position.
"expected to explain"
You are not expected to "prove" your lack of belief in pixies and fairies...
"faith in your chair"
Thats not "faith".
This isn't to say you have to accept God as that source, but you have to offer one. or else you are just writing your own 'bible' and telling people to 'do what this book says or you are wrong'
great stuff
That said, I think that christianity (and many other religions) have good moral teachings in their principles, but they should not overrule everything else because they are supposedly inspired by divinity.
greg returns!
Mr. Solomon's coolest fucking video EVER. Period.
Once again, great to see you back, Greg!
@bogbog0118
"repetition is not an argument"
Your argument remains invalid. You are confusing the definitions of different concepts of "faith". You keep claiming that lack of belief itself is faith, however, such a statement doesnt make sense whatsoever, just as follows from the provided dictionary references.
@ATDFXN You're using convoluted reasoning in your "argument," and the "5% of people who don't feel bad" are called sociopaths.
I used to watch you a few years ago... now I'm checking back and I'm like "Are you still alive!?"
@ATDFXN How is the bible or any other religious book more of a "solid source" than any governmental legislation?
@HisRoyalDudeliness
Examples?
Thoughts on religion By Greg! What more do we need! LOL
Btw, big misconception that Christians believe, or bible teaches, that the earth is only a few thousand years old. It never mentions specific times like that anywhere in the bible
Greg solomon makes me want to read more books. Then i might gain a tiny piece of his unfathomable knowledge.
