All of your advice is excellent. I would add that it's important to pretend you know where you're going when arriving at any station. Walk with purpose until you find a spot in the terminal where you can get your bearings. I might look for a kiosk where I can stand and look out. Then, I look for the maps or train schedules like I'm just a regular commuter. Don't get off a train and start looking up and around for schedules. Just pretend you know where you're going. When traveling with my husband, if we have to wait in line anywhere, I stand behind him, back to back and I scan the crowd. I've spotted pickpockets going after other people using this system. I also pay attention to others on escalators. Once I saw a man ahead of me on an adjacent escalator who was turned around and scanning the crowd. I gave him a " don't even think about it look" and he turned away. Maybe he was looking for friends, maybe not. Of course pickpockets are everywhere, but it's much harder to cope with stolen property in a foreign country. Beware of any man wearing three piece suits, or any suit, who is just "hanging around" any station. Your wallet will be hidden in his jacket. Also watch for men carrying folded newspapers, another hiding place. Enjoy yourself, but stay vigilant. I'm a very short, slight female, now old. It seems that some who comment that they never have a problem are men, probably younger and definitely stronger. They are much less likely to be victims and consider the rest of us to be alarmists. Having said all that, I'm off to Italy again soon. It's simply too beautiful to miss.

As a female young solo traveler, I’ve learned how to stay safe. I do not wear a purse, but I have like a small bag kind of thing that goes around my neck and under my clothes so that no one can see it. I am also good at blending in, not looking like a foreigner, and looking like I know where I am going. This goes as far as people asking me directions in Paris and Montreal or assuming I spoke French.

Excellent tips.Thank you. I would add just one thing-be wary of elevators and never go in alone. I believe I was almost robbed or even worse a few years ago in Rome. I was going down to the metro and I am sure I looked confused. A young woman said she would help me-here was an elevator just around the corner. I felt a little wary. when we got to the elevator I almost stepped in but changed my mind. At that point she looked upset and turned to look towards a man-probably her partner..Thank goodness my intuition kicked in from working years in New York.

Happened to me 30 years ago when I traveled alone. I was in the Colosseum area and 5 to 6 kids came around me and took my wallet from my pant and ran away. I immediately griped 2 kids and asked them to return the wallet to me. They bought me to the other kids and returned the wallet. I got the wallet, ID car was there but some money was missing. My advice is don't put money in your wallet or handbags. Put it into a pocket with zipper or even in a sock / shoes and don't put all money in the same place.

I was in Rome last October and my family and I went to the Vatican City museums for a tour on a Wednesday! It was crowded on the train and we were forewarned about pickpockets. There were jostling inside the train and when I checked my crossbody bag once the train started moving I found it wide open. It had a magnetic clasp but when travelling I don't take my wallet with me I just take some cash and a card and tuck it away in the inner zipped pocket so whoever that was who tried to feel my bag inside would have only felt the hairbrush and hand sanitizer.

I realized that I made myself a target taking photos while waiting for the train and not putting my bag in the front.

😂 We had some Gypsies here in Sweden pre-pandemic who were so bold that they'd go up to a customer's shopping cart and start putting things in the carts for the customer to buy for them. Seriously, they would stroll the aisles to find a mark, often a single older woman, and indicate they needed diapers and food for their kids. It happened only once to me but it very common here for awhile. Then it suddenly stopped as store managers started chasing them out of the stores.

As a matter of fact, I've never seen so many designer bags even compared to NYC pre Covid. Maybe I'm lucky, or compared to where I came from, Rome feels extremely safe. Dirty, yes. Unsafe, no. My rule anywhere, in any city is never walk around lonely areas and never get into a crowded bus or train. I don't care if I'm late or if someone is waiting for me. I just don't do it. Your close call is almost exactly what happened to me once in New York City, when my phone was stolen. In the winter, I would never take my phone out while on the train. I kept it in my coat pocket, always, with my hand on it. I felt so proud of myself for keeping my phone out of sight. 😊 But when the train stopped, and the doors opened, I took my hand out of my pocket as I stepped onto the platform. During the pushing to get out, someone got their hands on my phone. I didn’t realize I took my hand out of my pocket until after my phone was stolen, and I retraced my steps. It was an unconscious habit. Theft can happen anytime, anywhere, even to careful people.

I am glad you were aware of what was going on and thwarted the thieves. We have been to Italy a number of times and we always fly into Rome and take the train from the airport to Termini station. It is always during the day when we arrive in or out of Termini and never had an issue. We have stayed many times in the Monti neighborhood which we have walked in most cases to our air bnb straight up Via Cavour and then the air bnbs are off that road on Via serpenti, Via dei Fori Imperiali or Via Giovanni Lanza etc. We have also stayed in a few near the Spanish steps which was nice but I preferred Monti more for some reason.I would make sure when booking your Airbnb you make sure of when you will arrive and note when you are allowed to check into your stay. If you get there earlier than check in and they do not let you drop off luggage it may be a good idea to book the first night ( if staying multiple nights) in a hotel so they will hold your bags while you walk around and enjoy the city. Or find a nice cafe or restaurant close to your Airbnb to grab coffee or a meal to kill time before check in. They do have STOW YOUR BAGS locations in Monti but we did not have a great experience with using them. Maybe our fault but I won't bother again lol. Packing light is the best idea as well, not so many large or many bags to keep track of. We have also stayed in Milan recently and felt very safe walking around everywhere there as well. It is a good idea to not acknowledge the people trying to sell roses or bracelets. We love Italy and prefer to travel there over many other places in the world.

Me and my group including others who didn't travel with us were robbed and pick pocketed by Tour guides, taxi drivers, and even security guards in Rome!!!. Avoiding Street scamers and thieves is the easy part, but avoiding officials who are criminals is nearly impossible and Rome knows it!. I saw an article stating wolves in sheep's clothes in Rome.
I'm a avid traveler and I've never experienced anything like Rome, and I've been to South America and Africa several times.
      Rome has nice places but

I watched your videos before going to Italy the first time, what I learned here and in other videos I knew what to watch for. Not only did I spot several of those "scams" I also felt my backpack being pulled a little when there was a crowd and line but they never could get in. Thanks to your videos I bought one of those anti-thief backpacks plus good locks for every zipper. Not only do they have lockable zippers where you can add another lock but they have steel cable in the straps plus they have steel wire mesh inside the main parts making them cut-resistant. That's all I use anymore when walking around the cities.

Great advice, and I say that as someone who has traveled solo in Europe and the U.S. for over a decade. I do everything you recommend, and will again when I'm in Rome next week.
A few more suggestions, from having learned the hard way that pickpockets are very, very skilled. Wear a money belt or neck wallet under your shirt, and keep your credit card, cash, and phone in there. A bit inconvenient but much safer than any pocket. Keep some extra cash (20 -30 euros) hidden in a shoe, or moneybelt so if you get pickpocketed you can buy a bus or train ticket back to your hotel. If you wear slacks and put your wallet in your pocket, attach a short chain from a belt loop to a metal ring attached to the wallet (learned that from a NYC cop). If you have a camera, carry it in a daypack rather than around your neck or hanging off your shoulder. Finally, put small locks on every backpack and luggage zipper.
One question, in light of your warning about the Termini area. in your opinion is area along Via Cavour near the Coliseum and Forum relatively safe at night, and in the very early morning? Any other opinions welcome.

We just got back from Rome and my girlfriend almost got her phone stolen out of her purse on the subway and I'm almost positive that it was the same girl you showed in your video (wearing a face mask with the sleeveless jacket) or at least probably from the same group. She tried to block us for a few seconds as we were trying to get off at our stop and wouldn't get out of the way as we were asking to her move. Once we were off the train, we noticed that my girlfriends purse was unlatched but luckily her phone is difficult to take out from the purse. I wish I watched your video before our trip so we would have been more careful. Thank you for posting videos like this. Notre Dame was crawling with pickpockets. I have to confess, my daughter and I got stuck at the Spanish Steps with a bracelet guy when we were there in 2006. My husband and I are heading to Rome next month. Your video has given me more information for safety and I am glad we picked a hotel near the Spanish Steps. Now, for the what to wear. I travel to Europe often and I know the importance of your messages. I saw many people crying at airport on the stolen of their belongings. My daughter once got her purse intruded in Paris during Christmas time when she was taking photos. I was the first noticed her purse was widely open without her aware of it. Luckily the only thing that was stolen was a little bag of lucky crystals she always carry with her and it's always on the top of everything else. Myself I never wear a purse on my shoulder when I travel. I use the fanny pack that I wear across my shoulders and keep it on my chest, mostly covered by a blazer or a light jacket. The fanny pack is very useful during a trip to hold a passport, all IDs, bank cards and some personal essentials you need during the day. Use a purse only when you're going to a nice dinner or a nice romantic going out for a special occasion. Purse is not safe when you're exploring a place on a trip to Europe. It's a main attraction to thief along with an expensive camera. I don't even take photos with my phone in an unsafe area.
Thank you for all the tips. I appreciate the tip on copying passport and the extra bank card to keep at the hotel.💕
ps: The crimes in Europe are still ways less dangerous than in california or you may be harm or even killed when resisting to criminals. Here in the US, when you get robbed , let go your stuffs to save your life. Am serious.

When I traveled with my daughter to Naples, I had a pickpocket experience that fortunately did not succeed. It happened at Napoli Centrale after we disembarked from the train with everyone else and going up the stairs, a group of four men "trapped" my daughter against the wall and tried to get her pursed, but since I was just behind them I held their hand away from the purse, they got startled and scrammed away and sat at a coffee bar close by pretending nothing happened, after we passed them they started yelling at me, we just kept walking away. Luckily it ended right there. I assume something similar could happen in crowded places. If I had been walking next to her they probably could have succeeded

    Hello, thanks for your videos.
I want to tell you about my recent experience with a pickpocket in the subway who stole a little more than two thousand euros from my waistbag.
Until then, I was convinced that it was impossible for someone to steal something from my waistbag.
I spent the weekend in Rome with my family. On Monday 08.05.2023, the plane left for us back home to Slovakia. Around 11:10 am, we (I and my famili) saved luggage in the left luggage office
at the Termini train station in Rome. (There they scanned my ID card). I put a ticket from the „left luggage office“ in my waistbag and i saw that I still had the my money there, in this time.
We wanted to take advantage of the remaining time by walking past the Vatican. Then we moved to a crowded subway and traveled to Ottaviano station. I wanted to pay in the Ottaviano street shop and found, that I didn't have the any money in my waistbag.
Someone has stolen me more than 2000 Eur from my waistbag in the subway. We flew the plane to the Slovak, we did not have the time to deal with the matter.
The next day from Slovakia, I just informally sent an e-mail message about it to e-mail addresses that I randomly found on the Internet (lglaznurp@carabinieri.it, trm38784@pec.carabinieri.it).
Probably not all pickpockets are so skilled that they can steal money from a bag and at the same time leave the documents in the bag there. I had no idea that someone had robbed me. That pickpocket must have been a great professional.
In your opinion, what percentage of pickpockets are so elitely skilled out of the total number of pickpockets at Termini station?

In short, your bag is your lover, always keep it under your eyes, in front of you, if you have to take it off put it on the floor between your legs, never ever loose eye contact. About that hook, I don't know.. I would definitely walk away leaving my bad behind me, that's probably the only thing I wouldn't recommend. I know it might be dirty, but I always put my bag between my feet while eating, sometimes on my knees if not big.
A last thing, anyone coming in Italy (or, actually, everywhere) should follow these good advices, anyway don't think it'll happen everyday, in 30 years in Rome it rarely happen to see someone steal a bag while walking for example, it's pretty safe just be careful and don't attract too much attention ;)

I have seen pickpocketing around the Colosseum in Rome, in Naples, when I travelled to Pompeii Scavi (guys waiting at the end of moving pathways to pickpocket you, as you step-off).
Also in Barcelona near the Segrada Familia.
Beware of unsolicited contact on the street, and anyone holding a newspaper at waist height - they will use it to hide the dipping of your pocket.
I once saw an American catch a pickpocket on a Paris Metro train. The American took back his wallet, beat the pickpocket, grabbed him by his collar and pants waistband, and threw him out onto the platform when the train stopped and the door opened.
As you sow, so shall you reap!

I went to Italy and didn't have any issues at all. I did make sure to fit in and not look like a tourist, and was always aware of my surroundings.

I just left Roma days ago, stayed for a week in the center of it all. NEVER did I feel unsafe. What an amazing city and people! That being said, I kept my wallet and phone in front pocket always, and never flashed money or wandered around drunk.

I have been to Rome many times since 1958
This June we had 2 incidents.. first when trying to get a ticket for the Metro, we were having trouble with our card. A man and woman came up to us and also helped. He used my card to get tickets and noticed I was carrying 3 euros in my hand. He asked if he could have change for a 20. Found out later that he switched it for a forged bill. Next on the metro from St. Peter’s to the Colessium we tried to get on the metro and a young woman was standing directly in front of the door and would not move. She just stood there expressionless and wouldn’t budge. People sitting across from me were telling to to hold my bag closer to me. I then sat next to them and they told me they were pickpockets. Turns out the group got off at the next stop. We later found out that my backpack had been opened slightly as had my daughters Fanny pack. Exactly what you said. Never riding Metro again. Rome is overrun with scammers, filth and crowds. So sorry to see
