Lyrics:
I'm your idol the highest title numero uno
I'm not a puerto rican but i'm speakin so that you know
And understand i got the gift of speech
And it's a blessin
So listen to the lesson i preach
I talk sense condensed into the form of a poem
Full of knowledge from my toes to the top of my dome
I'm kinda young but my tongue speaks maturity
I'm not a child i don't need nothin for security
I get paid when my record is played--to put it short

Dude was bragging about buying a new car every other month while standing in a junkyard. There was no need to rent a Lamborghini for a video shoot back then. No need to fake floss in the 80’s-90’s. No need to be vulgar, or ostentatious. Special Ed just painted vivid word pictures and we partied along with his lyrical imagery. Brilliant!
Vince Conard right 🤷🏾♀️
I like how corny the video was bc he was actin out most of what he said but they ain't have big money. I really like the end wit the baby alligator😉🤴✌
exactly, he didn't have to bullshit, and he could still paint a picture in your head, and it's 2020
No flashy jewelry, cash flashing, crazy outfit, auto tune, or twerkin... just straight talent, fast fwd today it’s pure image over talent and I can’t understand half these rappers what they sayin smh
A lot of people neglect the fact that this was before rap/Hip-Hop blew up. These MC’s were always bragging because this a competitive activity. It’s in his lyrics. Once rap went commercial, materialism dominated and there was no need in showing lyrical skill. That’s why today’s rappers don’t need skill. That’s why they don’t have the same subject matter. All that’s left now is materialism and showing off what they possess hence all the flashy stuff. Trust, I like when rappers are humble and are about the culture, but that’s the way this music evolved. Hate most of it, but no need to act surprised by the “vulgarity”. Like my boi 2pac said, “things change and that’s the way it is”.
Special Ed one of the most underrated rappers. His wordplay was crazy.
Very much so

Word up! MISS the old Mc days
This is why I hate when ppl excuse these rappers today by saying they're not lyrical because they're young. Special Ed was 16-17 while recording this album, Nas was 17-18 while recording Illmatic, Mobb Deep was 20 while recording The Infamous, and not to mention Joey Badass was 16 while recording 1999. Age is never an excuse for ignorance.
Right on. I used the same analogy a few weeks ago..
rocknrap12
Nas was actually 19/20 when recording Illmatic but yeah same concept.

WHO IS HERE AFTER WATCHING HIM ON DRINK CHAMPS 2023?! This song is seriously uplifting…full of affirmations. Taking the time to listen to each word…I LOVE IT!!❤️
Came right to it after watching Drink Champs! I always liked this song but I never really knew a lot about Special Ed and that Drink Champs episode taught me a lot about him, he seems very knowledgeable and a good dude!

Yes we had real hip hop back then.

One of the hardest beats in the history of hip hop.......
Facts
@Black lodge you're not gonna change my opinion, dude
lodge those are good choices but those beats came out at least 5 years later.....I always give a lil more credit to the originators back in the 80's....remember, this beat came out in 88/89....of course other beats years down the road might sound more "hard" but they should since music is suppose to evolve....its like comparing Rakim and Tupac....rappers from 2 different eras but one was clearly influenced by the other....same thing with beats
@Black lodge and I said ONE of the hardest beats, meaning there are others....good lord!
@Black lodge so why you felt the need to tell me this if you weren't trying to change my mind?.... my initial comment was an MY opinion, just leave it at that....
My mom was born in 67 n me I was born in 94. She died in 16 😢. Best believe she played this jawn every day until then and this song is embedded in my brain. Today is her birthday so I had to blast this jawn

Not only are the lyrics timeless but the dancers are killing it in the video
He was the first to completely cap and rap about flossing 😂
Ikr I suddenly feel like doing the running-man 😂
I woulda liked to see a little more breakin though honestly
@Dom Sansotta tbh at this time and space, breakdancing was already played out as an 80s thing. This is the 90s vibe already in fruition. Dancing was a bit chill with Bobby Brown flow, not too crazy or animated, a bit before the Soul Brothers hit the scene.
Gotta break it down when I hear dis beat yo....
This song will never get old. Lyrics are great. Brings me back.

One of the most underrated hip hop tracks ever. The flow, the content, the ability to put it together so smoothly. Classic.
He recorded this album when he was 16 and it was released on his 17th birthday. In this song we hear Special Ed say, "I'm wise because I rise to the top of my grade. Wanted peace on Earth, so to God I prayed." Some of these young rappers now can't put two words together to make an intelligible phrase.

So nobody talking about those dance moves...yes we did that in 80s-90s. Proud to have grown up in this era.
"think just blink and I made a million rhymes just imagine if you blink a million times, dam I'll be paid, I got it made."
You're talking about the moves, I don't understand your post.
Why should people talk about the dance moves? There's nothing particularly new there, Fred Astaire was doing "Hip hop" dance moves in the 1930s

Special ed is better than most rappers of 2023 , this shit banging!!
Pretty much all especially the new upcoming rappers that no one knows about or cares about in today's time.
"I'm outspoken my language is broken into a slang but it's just the dialect that I select when I when I hang" cmon now🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
One of the greatest lyrical songs ever made. Ed is a lyrical genius.
This is real hip hop not hip slop that they rap now days bs now
💯
Listen carefully to his lyrical genus, score arrangement and video, best part was the way he played musical "leap frog" (I make all the money the rhymes I invent, "you" burn "me", really?) by riffin' [while apparently reppin'] all the marketing campaigns that he was spoofing . . . Cascade, Parkay etc. , I. GOT. IT. MADE. Wish today's 16 year olds would get it!
Let me just clarify I’m not a fan of new age rap in any way (grew up on mid to late 90’s) but if you think this is one of the greatest lyrical songs ever made you sir are still free basing on that good crack from the 80’s 😂 you clearly are stuck in a nostalgic bubble in rap and don’t know hip hop in general
@@Joelpittman84 first of all, what's with the insults? We're strangers on the internet. You can't have a conversation without insults? Second, you said all of that without giving any explanation to prove your point, so you really said nothing. If you're going to talk like this, at least explain why you have that viewpoint. So lets hear it. "Enlighten" us.
Special Ed is DEFINITELY underrated!!!
Teenagers sounded like grown men back then
I thought Ed was in his twenties when this dropped. Never knew he was only 16 because he spoke articulately and had a grownup swag. Teen rappers today speak like they can barely put a sentence together.
U right about that so sad uuugghhh they barely can read sad future glad i grew up n the era i did
me to. i thought he was 19 or 20. He did speak very proper. this back when rappers talked completely and with a full grown sentence in interviews. Today's rappers interviews they don't even be knowing half the words.
Nook Guy lol, so true.
Dopekid99 yeah i know.
Dopekid99 i didnt expect he was 16 though.
YOU should've been around when it FIRST dropped... oooh man.
I wasn't born yet until 2 years after this dropped.

So much good music back then. I definitely remember when this dropped though.

I don't think it's underrated.
The confidence, the lyricism, and smooth flow, this kid was an artist. Everything about this was pure 90s hip hop.
1989.
1990s were a lot different than 87-89 era, prolly cos of Nas in 91...
Dude beat me to it. I was gonna say this ain't 90's hip hop, this straight late 80's at best. Nas, Big, Pac, Mobb, Wu that's what the 90's sounded like, completely different. Still this is literally one of my favorite rap songs of all-time.
