Such a well behaved horse! When I'm riding my horse down the road it always has a special routine:
    1. Walk past the coffee shop
    2. Eat the grass
    3. Refuse to move for the rest of the day

Of course she knows her way back home. She's smart and have an excellent memory. Back in the 50s when I was a child I saw everyday our milkman's horse stop precisely in the same spots along several blocks and I found it fascinating. One day I asked the milkman how he had taught her and he told me that he didn't. And he said the only thing that I know about horses. He did his rounds exactly in the same way everyday and she memorized everything including the places where she could nip some delicious vegetation. He said that she could do his whole round from home and back and if she by any chance escaped in his day off, he would find her doing his usual round of work. 🐴🐴🐴

All horses know the way home, unless you've driven them somewhere. Many horses are "barn crazy" meaning they'll fight you to go back to the barn, or 'home', the ENTIRE ride. 😂 I used to have a horse, Duchess, and she would run full speed to the barn as soon as I told her to go home. It was scary the first time, I had no idea she could go that fast, but after that it was like a game. 😊❤ I sure miss that beautiful girl.

Yes we called that barn sour. That gets taught from running horse back to a barn. We picked a place at different spots that we would let them canter but never back to the barn. Anytime they tried to get out of hand they were stopped and asked to calmly walk. The young horses that we were just getting under saddle were the ones that need this lesson the most.

The bars in my small western town have hitching posts for horses, we tied them up had fun in the bar then we got on the horses and they took us home we didn't need to control them. What made it so much cooler was we had reflecter bands on their ankles so cars could see them and they knew how to stop and look both ways, because it was just routine. I miss those days 💖

Many years ago I was with my daughter while she got confident with her first horse, which was an ex endurance Arabian. While we were wandering through the bush (we live in Western Australia), it gradually occurred to me that we should head home, which then made me realise I didn’t know the way home, and it was getting a bit late in the day. My daughter, who was riding him, didn’t know either. The only thing I could think of was to tell Fella (the horse) to go home and hope the stories I’d read about homing instinct were true. Immediately he changed direction and briskly headed off, with me controlling his speed from the ground. He eventually got us home, but it was a very challenging journey, because he just strode over and through all the dense bushes, which I had to jump over or go around while he waited for me to catch up. My daughter, of course, had a much smoother experience. The Moral of the story is… make sure you are riding before giving the command to go home😀.

Edit: if you weigh too much then you can actually hurt them but by the looks of it they are not over weight (disclaimer i am not a professional horse rider or anything like that but this is just some info I’ve learned from a few people)

Usually most if not all horses know their way home. Partially because of their routine and knowledge of being fed and cared for, and partially because of their sense of direction.

Reminds me of an incident my great-uncle told me about. When he was young, they only had a buggy and a wagon to get around. Most everyone in their community had horses and buggies or wagons and not cars. It was early 1900s and cars were too expensive for a lot of people. He said that he had picked up his girl friend with the horse & buggy for a date. After their daye, he had taken her back home and headed back home himself. Only he fell asleep. The next thing he knew, he woke up sitting in the buggy in front of his girl friend's home. The horse turned around and went back there instead of heading back to his own home. I always loved that story. LOL
