    Six cylinders and dual ignition all the way! Like the look of the avionics telemetry panel. The whole plane looks very thoughtfully and skilfully engineered.

    Although I fly off on my personal strip in my hay field, And I know hanger rent is outrageous here in Texas, The last time I rented a hanger was about 20 years ago and it was $150 a month then. And he said he pays 160 for that private hanger. Man that is cheap, old wore out raggedy door ones around here are 550+. With water and elec run ya over 900-1200$ a month.
    I had a sonex for 5 years. Love it ! Hated the jabby 3300 it was almost un flyable above 95°. The CHT’s are terrible on them and to many other issues. I spent to much keeping the engine running in good shape.
    My 3300 jabby would cruise around 165mph at 80% and around 155 around 75%

    That's one heck of a beautiful airplane that Jim built! I think I'd go with the AeroVee Turbo 2.1, but- I'm a stickler for weight and I think that smooth running and awesome sounding Jabiru is a touch heavier! How 'bout that start up though- like buttah! I really liked the panel and I hope to heck he got his 40 (and 5!) hours burned off and had all of August to enjoy the bird freely! Jim seems to be suffering from aphasia (inability to find words in your mind) which is often the result of a stroke. He seems very smart, looks as healthy as an ox and I hope he gets several excellent years of flying in before he needs to retire those keys! What great work he's put in, great choices on options- I bet he'll love every minute aloft in that beauty, and she's fast as snot too! Good on ya, Jim! Mebbe we can convince EAC to do a follow up later this Fall? Would love to see the grin on his face after a flight! Priceless.

    Nice! Congrats Jim, it'll be a hot rod for sure! 👍👍👍 I also did a bunch of taxiing before my first flight. The Sonex gets REAL light on the ground at about 25 MPH indicated, doesn't feel like it would take too much more to fly. I'm honestly thinking about going back to the lever brake on the side, but with a hydraulic master cylinder.

    • @blrmaurice
      @blrmaurice Před 3 lety +4

      I’d recommend the Tracy O’brien hydraulic disk brakes with the motorcycle lever on the stick. With this setup you don’t have to take your hand off the stick to brake. Worked great for me.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures Před 3 lety

      @@blrmaurice Thanks Bob. I actually have the O'Keefe hydraulic brake setup with a Hegar master cylinder on the stick. The Hegar cylinder has been... inconsistent. Perhaps it just needs to be rebuilt. I went on the O'Brien site to see which cylinder they use, but it appears that they are retiring. Looks like all the Sonex products have been sold off. Much luck and enjoyment to them in retirement!

      I’m am just worried about his finger rolling on both hands. These signs of Parkinson’s disease and there is no hiding it. My father contracted Parkinson’s and these are the biggest signs. If he has contracted it I hope it’s in the early stages because he can fly for a good amount of time before hanging up his keys like my father did. Hell he almost finished the Sonex so Let’s get the W/B done and call in the FAA! Great job!! Finish

    Whats your height and weight? How was it for room? With canopy looks like ample headroom eh

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures Před 3 lety

      Better question is, what's your height and weight? Each build will feel a little bit different based on how controls are laid out and how the interior is finished. I choose to sit in the center and use the outside rudder pedals when I'm solo, back to the left seat with only small passengers when I get there. B models have more room forward of your hips with a more reclined seating position. Honestly though, your best bet is to go see one and sit inside. Cheers!

      @@farmboy694 You're right to be wondering, first time I saw a Waiex I remember thinking, "boy that's small!" The owner was over 6 feet tall, probably under 200#. I'm 5' 9" and was about 250# at the time. (Less now.) We fit together, but it was tight. He didn't have a problem with headroom on the canopy, but I had to cock my head over due to the headset. (In-ear sets work great in these.) I'll be by myself 90+% of the time, so I consider my Sonex a roomy single seater. You should be fine, but as mentioned before, your best bet is to go see one.

      I have yet to see a B model in person, but they're supposed to be more roomy inside. Been considering a conversion on mine. They only come in kit form though, whereas the legacy model can be scratch built. (If that's your preference.)

    A medium sized hanger like that costs $400+ here in the San Francisco Bay area(KLVK) and have a decade long wait. The small sizes that are 40' wide you have about 12month wait and $350.

  • @repurposedperformance5762

    He seems like a very knowledgeable ol' man, probably forgot more than ill ever know but there is a big white elephant in the room and id would like to address it. Is someone of his current mental condition permitted to fly? Is it safe for not only the people below but himself? Maybe it was the camera making him space out and seem very confused so I don't want to pass judgment. I am genuinely curious if there is a governing body (i'd assume the FAA) that says (your grounded!) in a sense based off mental capacity.

    No back-up analog air speed gauge--- not a good plan.

    • @JustaPilot1
      @JustaPilot1 Před 3 lety +9

      There are 1000s of aircraft both homebuilt and certified that don't have a mechanical airspeed indicator (not gauge). Such is the nature of modern GPS-driven avionics with battery backup.

    • @ExperimentalAircraftChannel
      @ExperimentalAircraftChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      These new "Glass Cockpit" options do have an option for a Battery Back up in case of full electrical system failure. Me personally... may install at least an airspeed indicator. Just-in-Case. :-) But they have been proven to be VERY reliable.

      I wonder what the biggest engine that could go in one? Anyone out there know someone who added more fuel too? I would love one with double or triple the range for a 1 man cross country plane

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures Před 3 lety +1

      @SonexFlyyer Yup, my Sonex kinda "whistles" all over when it's slow, let alone what the controls feel like. Fly the airplane! 👍👍👍

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures Před 3 lety +1

      FWIW, the Sonex honestly doesn't have a lot of panel space for all the bells and whistles. All that being said, a couple local builders have used UMA mini "steam" gauges for mechanical backups. I'm considering adding some when I redo my panel. But as I mentioned in another comment, she gives you plenty of feedback to let you know she's slow, so it's not really necessary.
