For the ones who are confused about first lines of the song: this song is not taking itself seriously. The first lines are actually dumb, childish insults. You know how in the middle school, people are trying insulting you with “your mom” jokes etc. Also it shows the culture: members of Pulp grew up in poor neighborhoods where people are more aggressive. The character in the song is mad after break up, so he insults his former partner in different ways…
Similar to where I grew up, though that wasn't really poor. I think it's quite common across the industrial North. At least, the industrial parts of Yorkshire.

@@lauren6161 Hey, a lifelong American fan of Pulp from NYC over here! lyrics: The trouble with your brother, He's always sleeping with your mother. And I know that your sister missed her time again this month. Am I talking too fast or are you just playing dumb? If you want I can write it down. It should matter to you, 'Cause aren't you the one, With your razzmatazz and the nights on the town? Oh you knew it, and you blew it didn't you babe? I was lying when I asked you to stay. Now no-one's gonna care, If you don't call them when you said. And he's not coming round tonight to try and talk you into bed. And all those stupid little things, They ain't working, No they ain't working any more. You started getting fatter, Three weeks after I left you. And now you're going with some kid who looks like some bad comedian. Are you gonna go out? Or are you sitting at home eating boxes of Milk Tray? Watch TV on your own, aren't you the one, With your razzmatazz and your nights on the town? And your father wants to help you doesn't he babe? But your mother wants to put you away. Now no-one's gonna care, If you don't call them when you said. And he's not coming round tonight to try and talk you into bed. And all those stupid little things, They ain't working, No they ain't working any more. Oh well I saw you at the doctor's, Waiting for a test. You tried to look like some kind of heiress, But your face is such a mess. And now you're going to a party, And you're leaving on your own. Well, I'm sorry, but didn't you say, That things go better with a little bit of razzamatazz? And now no-one's gonna care, If you don't call them when you said. And he's not coming round tonight to try and talk you into bed. Now it's half past ten in the evening, And you wish that you were dead, 'Cause all those stupid little things, They ain't working, No they ain't working any more
All that brit pop palaver put me off back in the 90s. Pulp make Oasis look like the B grade Beatles imitators they were. Pulp are one of the all time great English bands. Jarvis is a brilliant lyric writer, up there with Ray Davies
Just one of many amazing Pulp songs. Years have passed by listening to these songs and I often question: Are they really just superb or is it the feeling of travelling back in time to my adolescence? I always feel lucky having grown up listening to this music. God bless Jarvis Cocker! He’s not Jesus but he has the same initials🤣🤣 Fans will know what I’m talking about😉
A most exemplary example of rather fine pop broderie- Anglaise in a manner of speaking, so to speak...or, perhaps , that is to say like sitting in a deck chair in the back garden on one's lawn on a summer 's evening whilst sipping on copious glasses of vintage Chateau D'estrournel St.Estelle from 1997 - 1999. The dark heart of the nineties; the classical period of the nineties; that is the four years that pre-date Hooper's Hooch lemon alco-pop. Post alco-pop is the dark ages of the nineties. And the first season of The Sopranos is modern nineties.
I bought the book that features in the opening shots called: "How to Live in Style: Young Color Guide to Modern Decoration, 1974". Brilliant read that gives real insights into the visual stylistics of PULP's music videos. An example includes a double page spread 110 to 111 with a rounded beveled image in full 1970's décor (*showing a wall-integrated alcove bath unit fixture with a beveled square frame design in the picture). This finding is relevant to reflect the boarder you see throughout 'DISCO 2000'. There aren't as many hardback copies available to buy. (*Original Post = 66 Likes - was removed due to a troll).

Lyrically, this song is brutal. A merciless sneer at a former lover.
I always wondered... are they the subjective perception of a jilted lover, or just the depiction of a breakup?
I always perceived it as being from the perspective of a woman.
