    Could you do a video on AFFORDABLE/cheap low waste, eco friendly companies/products? Some of the things you share are too far out of my price range :( It'd be MUCH appreciated :)

      @leilanidru7506 Před 5 lety +5

      Same😣 I’m a college student and spring break just finshed and I used so much plastic on food😭😭😭 I tried composting all my food scraps but I realized I don’t know crap about how to compost and I ended up having two tiny plastic bags full of trash😔 80% could’ve been composted and recycled but I don’t have access or knowledge about either. It’s was mostly foam/cardboard packaging, glass jars from my Alfredo and marinara sauce, and metal cans for canned foods, and rest were cooking scraps. All. In. The. Trash

    • @JacquelineUnderwood
      @JacquelineUnderwood Před 5 lety +2

      blessing B well you can reuse glass jars (just wash them well) and you can even freeze in them (just make sure you leave enough headroom, and if you’re worried, leave the top off until it’s frozen), Tins are recyclable or you can plant in them or reuse them to make cute containers, and in you’re allowed, look into a worm box for compost. They’re exceptionally cool and require very little.

    • @leilanidru7506
      @leilanidru7506 Před 5 lety

      Jacqueline Underwood I reuse all the glass bars I have as drink containers. Recently turned a finished coconut oil glass jar into my reusable mug. And then cut up an old, clean, sock on both ends and put it around the jar for when it gets too hot or cold. It’s like those cardboard things you get at Starbucks. Anyways, I reuse what I can trust me. It still isn’t enough. I had like two glass jars. And I have absolutely no use for steel/metal containers. I don’t plant and don’t feel confident enough to compost via worms in the dorm room. I feel like that level of composting is expert level......and kinda yucky and scary.

    • @JacquelineUnderwood
      @JacquelineUnderwood Před 5 lety

      blessing B well, if you have a place for it, you can also just bury food scraps in the ground and they’ll break down, or set them out for animals as long as they aren’t bad for them (general rule of thumb, don’t put out anything that dogs or cats are allergic to and avoid citrus fruits as well). That’s a smart way to make a drink sleeve, I would have never thought of that. What options do you have for recycling?

    • @leilanidru7506
      @leilanidru7506 Před 5 lety

      Jacqueline Underwood that’s a smart way to compost by burying😁 I hope it actually works. And I honestly don’t even wan give recycling tips coz id feel like a fraud trying to tell someone what to do or pretend I’m an expert or some genius😅. That idea for a drink sleev hit me randomly and it if the blue. I do what I can and kinda make it up as I go along. I’ve discovered a lot of my own hacks but none of them are coming to mind atm. My new jar with my hot chicolate in it was hot as hell and later that night I realized my sock had a hole in in the toe area. Instead of throwing it away my brain just made the connection. I thrift and sew a lot too. I sewed my own cutlery pocket sleeves from a piece of fabric and carry my own metal cutlery from home. Find different ways to be creative instead of buy, buy, buy. That’s the rule of thumb I go with sometimes. I either want to make or dupe everything. Being a broke college student definitely helps that mindset.

    When you’re in Seattle check out Eco Collective in Ballard! Its a shop that was started by women to support and encourage sustainable living. Also while in Seattle try and shop at PCC or other co-ops instead of Whole Foods if you can. PCC is all about supporting our local farmers and promoting sustainability, there are quite a few surrounding Seattle too if you happen to be staying outside of the city. There are also a couple neighborhood co-ops that are fun to shop at! I hope you are in Portland/Seattle this week to enjoy the nice weather we are having

    FYI some of these tips won't work for international travel. Usually you're not allowed to bring produce (fruits/veggies) through security for international flights. Dry snacks are okay as long as they're not nut products (e.g., pretzels would be fine). Depending on the airport you're in, TSA can get finicky about solid soaps, shampoos, and conditioners as well because they have ingredients similar to incendiary devices.

    • @ashleyhappenstotravel
      @ashleyhappenstotravel Před 5 lety

      Ancillary The international rules are super strict. They don’t want your food carrying bugs that could invade and impact their agriculture. I still bring food when I travel but make sure I eat it on the plane.

    Hope you enjoy your trip to Portland! I grew up here, so it’s cool to hear someone be excited to visit. I highly recommend checking out Powell’s Books for some good wandering, Blue Star Donuts (because frankly they’re better than the overhyped VooDoo) and Stumptown coffee. Also if you drink there will be a good beer within throwing distance from wherever you are in the city. Pro-tip: when you head back home, the airport here has water bottle fill stations so you don’t have to ask anyone!

    Something I thought I might throw in in terms of food is to do research on what's foods might not be allowed in other countries! I know here in Australia a lot of people have gotten into trouble for bringing certain foods that can damage put country. :)

    When I brought my own snacks I had to take them out of my suitcase and put them in a tray during the tsa check, it was a new rule when I flew last year. I was told their new scanners will go off if food is detected in a suitcase. This probably depends on the airports, I experienced it in Dulles & Los Angeles. Just wanted to put that out there for those who may not know.

    I also want to say, I've been inspired by your videos to reduce my waste and impact on the environment. I'm a teacher in WV, and so it's a bit hard with NO bulk stores around and the amount of copies I have to make for my students (my board provides paper and I dont think its post-consumer recycled). Do you have any tips?

      @leilanidru7506 Před 5 lety

      Can you imagine what a difference it would make if we had systems and institutions that allowed us to be more eco friendly. Better bulk shopping assess, comprehensive recycling systems and education, compost pickup, etc. it would be so much easier and cheaper for everyone.

    • @leilanidru7506
      @leilanidru7506 Před 5 lety

      Ethan Bartlett idk if ur a college teacher or high school and below but at my college I have a professor who literally hands out pages and pages of article each class meeting with the PDF’s easily accessible online on the schools website for that specific class. I’m pretty she’s killed a least 27272892922726272818927364 trees already and we still have a month left in our semester😑 anyways, have to tried recommending electronic copies and emailing it out to your students? This gets harder the younger your class is of course. Elementary for example.

    • @ethan2bart
      @ethan2bart Před 5 lety

      @@leilanidru7506 I'm a high school music teacher, so a lot of the stuff I hand out has to be physical copies, luckily they get taken back up and stored for later use, but work sheets and stuff like that I have to hand out paper copy. I've thought about purchasing my own post-consumer recycled paper, but that would be so expensive. I think it would be cool if our schools set up a deal with a recycling company and recycled and got some cash for doing so. It would teach the students a lot.

    Hi! Thanks for good tips! Did you consider traveling other ways than by airplane? I know you would have to travel over more than one day. Don't know how it is in US, but in Europe you can travel many places by train over two days and for me it works quite well :)

      @Angela Black It is still possible to be there on time, but you have to ask your employer if it is for work of course. If you work from home or you are a student it is easier :)

    That brand was literally just advertised in my insta feed 😂 oh, would you happen to know of any creators that talk about international zero waste travel? I’m going to japan next year and don’t want to be rude or confusing if I have my own straw, utensils, etc
