    I followed your instructions to the "T" on the thermostat housing. I substituted the 3M trim adhesive with Gasgacinch. I cleaned the surfaces of the intake manifold and thermostat housing till they were hospital clean. My 92 Thunderbird Sport 5.0 had a slow dribble leak because I had used too much RTV! So, I followed your steps, used a skim coat of the gasgacinch, let the adhesive set up for a few minutes, cleaned the bolts with a wire brush, put some thread sealant on them; Now no more leaks!!

    Superb video and instructions ! Thanks. Honestly Im very hesitant to drill holes in it - but it does make a lot of sense to get rid of bubbles and I admit have zero experience with that thermostat setup.

    I ask a question about a thermostat and Chris makes this video... talk about full service! I changed my thermostat today without a hitch and my Mustang is now keeping cool. BTW the gasket I purchased from NAPA had a peel-back sticky surface so I didn't need to use the spray adhesive. Thanks for making the video, Chris.

    Great video. I noticed the guys doing the MustangMedics videos use black silicone instead of spray adhesive to adhere the gasket to the thermostat housing. They then use the same silicone on top of the gasket like you do in this video (essentially using silicone on both sides of the gasket). Wondering if there is an advantage either way.

      Hi....The reason for the adhesive is to have the gasket stick & hold the thermostat in place so during the installation process the thermostat cant drop out of its indexed area & get caught between the thermostat housing & the intake manifold.. Cracking the housing when the bolts are tightened..The silicone goes on the gasket side that will face the intake manifold opening.

    I think the most awesome HOW TO should be one like "how to put your original gauges to work" i think that is the most common problem in those old cars! a lot of people just use aftermarket and that is just not cool! sorry for my english im from venezuela! i really like your videos! im a mustang fan! cheers :D

    I don't agree with drilling out thermostats. Seriously, engineers designed them with many years of education. The big 'secret' is to pull out the cooling sensor upon refilling. No more 'air locks'. Or even pull off the heater hose at the highest point...
    One more tip on installing an aluminum housing would be:
    prevent leaks by putting the housing in a vice carefully, and make the gasket area flat by filing with care.
    I like the contact spray that he used. Great tip for beginners!

      Engineers do a lot of things. Doesn't always mean they are right. While an engineer has to consider the extra 2 cents per thermostat, a mechanic see's how things operate in the real world

    Im a big fan, seen all your videos. I have a 66 mustang C-code with a 2 bbl carb which is flooding, I first believed it was just a float problem, I opened the airhorn and adjusted the float, but realized there are leaks from the bottom of the carb. So I ordered a new float to replace the old brass one and a rebuild kit so I can rebuild it. I would like to learn how to do everything on my car and would love your guidance, if you can do a video about troubleshooting a carb I would appreciate it

    Hi Chris,
    Excellent video as usual.
    I have a 67 289 2bbl. I was running a 180 thermostat and have been working on the car, not really driving it at all. I let it reach temp and drove it around the block to come back to my driveway as it was hissing and pumping coolant out the overflow nub that I don't have a hose on. I searched around and was told to go to a 160 thermostat and lower the level of the coolant as it was high.
    Changed it to the 160 and today again I boiled over and squirted coolant all over.
    I'm at a loss I put a new water pump in last year, temp gage shows me hot, radiator is showing brownish coolant like its rusty and that. Looking for your help Chris

    Thank you for the great videos. I always enjoy them. Quick question for you. My Grandfather and I were just talking about where the needle on the temperature gauge should be on a 1965 Mustang deluxe interior gauge (the ones like the 1966 instrument cluster). He has two with this gauge, and they both run just a little bit above the "C". (The one with the stock fan shroud runs a little cooler than the other). Is this normal?

    Why drill two holes in your thermostat, when bypass hose does the same thing?

      You would think that but the by-pass hose is not on the side of the thermostat housing that allows the air bubbles to escape until the thermostat starts to open..

    I hate buying from idiots who don't understand the cooling system, I have one without a thermostat, because the idiot thought they don't need them, try stopping in the winter with the high idle on, because the choke set while you were driving, due to the engine operating temp being too low. I do the cardboard in the winter, too much, it overheats, none, well, the auto choke won't turn off, not to forget, the heater blows cold air until you stop and sit at a red light long enough to get the fluid hot!
