How Prescription Sunglasses Are Made

  • Have a look behind the scenes and see how I make a pair of prescription sunglasses, using a clear optical frame.
    Today I've had a few orders for an alternative to the traditional pair of sunglasses. I'm using a normal optical frame and turning it into a pair of prescription sunglasses. These lenses are UV protected and scratch resistant.
    It's great to have the ability to create anything I want, such as this example.
    A lot of people don't realise you can transform pretty much any frame into sunglasses, it really opens up different options.
    Let me know if there is anything you want to know about eyewear, frames, lenses and sunglasses.

    Brilliant... Now I see why I can't just pop in to the optometrist and simply replace a broken frame.
    Thanks for uploading.

      Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, unfortunately many optical stores do not have the equipment to produce eyewear on site. Fortunately I have my own optical laboratory, this allows me to make a complete set of glasses in about 10-15 minutes, that combined with holding a large stock of various prescription lenses also helps 🤓 Thanks for watching and supporting my content 🙂
      Keep safe. Colin

    Hi great video. Without having to go into the maths. Is there a easy way to decide if a blank stock lens will fit the frame of choice. Looking into having an onsite lab in my opticians and finding these things confusing. Should we just buy in frames that are similar lens diameters. We learn all these thkngs in uni but there has to be a simpler way to decide. Thanks 😊

    As a life long glasses wearer this is fascinating. How do you get into this? I'd love to have a go. Do you have to be a trained optician? Or is this more of a technician role?

    • @precisionopticseyewear

      Thanks for watching, glad it was interesting. I got into Optics whilst I was waiting to retake my medical for the Royal Air Force after passing my exams, I ended up working at Specsavers and sticking there for many years, doing various roles and becoming part of management. I was trained by some great people there and did courses etc. Then the years of experience add up and that's something that can't be taught. You do not need to be an optician to do this, and yes, this is more technician/manufacturering based rather than clinical 🙂

    Question for you, should you put “scratch resistant and anti glare” on sunglasses or just on your seeing glasses??

    • @precisionopticseyewear
      @precisionopticseyewear  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Bajan, thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes, most definitely. The scratch resistant coating speaks for itself, it's going to really help prolong the life of your lenses with day to day scratches etc and the antiglare is great when applied on the inised (back) of the lens to help reduce the reflections of your own eyes when wearing the sunglasses, this can also be applied to the outside of the lens too. Do you wear sunglasses with this coating on?
      Many thanks
      Colin😎

    Does it affect my visions health if I keep them always on, inside and out?

    • @precisionopticseyewear
      @precisionopticseyewear  Před 3 lety

      Hi, thanks for watching and for your comment. The main things to consider are what your optician has recommended and how dark the sunglasses are. If you dark and wearing indoors and depending upon the time of day, this could be hard and maybe even a bit dangerous. If your recovering from a recent cataract operation then wearing sunglasses is recommended to help with the bright light. It really depends what and why you are thinking of wearing them all the time indoors too?

      @@precisionopticseyewear i have been wearing glasses for 6 years now, and they are permanent until I get a surgery. And I’m mostly outside so I thought I could use them as my main, inside too

      @@gto4609 this is going to be something that your medical practitioner will need to advise you on really. It will depend upon what they recommend.
