  • Getrude Jekyll always give me the best spring display since last year. This is its second spring and it actually suffered really bad frost damage in winter last year. I had to prune out lots of damaged canes because of that and thought I will miss its bloom this year. It bounced back with good amount of buds and perfect blooms like nothing ever happened to her. What a resilient rose!! A must have if you need a rose to brighten up a corner. It is a rose that is so bright and you need to wear your sunglasses to look at it. Very strong old rose fragrance as well.

    The Gertrude Jekyll has antique rose in her parentage, and it blooms on old cane and not on new canes. Therefore, if someone prunes it hard it won’t bloom as much. Also, it flush once then sporadically which I also don’t mind because each bloom is just spectacular. Loved the video!

      Lots of climber shared that characteristic. You are right about its blooming habit. I don't mind of it blooms sporadically if it gives flush like this in spring and smaller flush in fall. Just phenomenal!!!

    I'm trying to make up my mind whether to get Gertrude Jekyll or James Galway. I have watched your videos and know you have both. I'm in zone 4B. I would like something that will blossom continually from spring to fall. Which one would you recommend?

    • @backyardparadise2334
      @backyardparadise2334  Před 6 měsíci

      Definitely James Galway. It repeats more than GJ and a lot healthier and vigorous. So, if you get frost damage in one winter, it can definitely recover easier.

    So beautiful! I bought Gertrude Jekyl rose and planted in beginning of June. It gave me 3/4 blooms but then stopped and became very tall about 6feet. I pruned it to 4 feet. Should I prune more?I specifically ordered the Gertrude Jekyll shrub rose and not the climber. But it seems like my Gertrude is trying to climb and the cane is not strong, needs support to stay upright. I don’t want it to be a climber. What should I do to make it a bushy upright shrub like yours? Please advice.

    • @backyardparadise2334
      @backyardparadise2334  Před rokem +1

      Don't prune it. It is a climber and it blooms more as climber. If you can move it to a fence area and get to fan out the canes. It blooms soooo well this way.
