The folklore of Binham Priory, the legendary subterranean tunnels & the ghost story of Jimmy Griggs!

- Binham Priory is the historic remains of a Benedictine Monastery which was founded in 1091. It was later closed in 1539 during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Secret underground tunnels were said to link the priory to nearby Walsingham Shrine. A ghostly monk was regularly seen at the tunnel entrance and was said to haunt the grounds from dusk till dawn. Folklore tells a man called 'Jimmy Griggs' once took it upon himself to investigate the haunting. Accompanied by his dog called 'Trap' one evening he decided to enter the dark tunnel. A sizeable local crowd gathered to watch with intrigue. Playing a fiddle so crowds could mark his progress, the audience listened intriguingly until the music abruptly halted. Eventually the dog returned shivering and distressed. But no sign of the man as the storm clouds gathered. The morning after (much to the villagers distress) the tunnel entrance was found collapsed in the storm. It is said the echoes of his fiddle can still be heard, while the black hooded monk is still said to roam the vicinity. The ancient barrow where the man disappeared, was quite recently excavated for road expansion. Interestingly the skeleton of a man and dog were found. Asking the question did Trap go back into the tunnel and search for his owner once the storm set in? A man's best friend loyal to the end! The ghostly monk roaming the vicinity is believed to be the unquiet sprit of a former abbot from Wymondham called Alexander de Langley. He is said to have driven himself insane by over studying the holy text and was sent to Binham Priory to see out his days in solitary confinement. He was reputedly prone to fits of rage and was said to be so violent they chained him up after his death. No-one would remove them in case he was pretending. It is said the monks buried him in the churchyard still wearing the chains.

I absolutely love this place. My maternal grandparents, great grandparents and various relativesare buried there. As a child my parents on their way back from visiting friends would call and tidy the graves and leave flowers. I would meanwhile go in search of the black monk, totally unafraid - even venturing into the dark church. Unfortunately never got a glimpse of him! I wsn't the slightest bit scared, even though it was sometimes dusk. Also I don't think I would have been scared even if I saw him! The place to me always had a comforting atmosphere.

One of the most spectacular places I've visited. Wonderful, i have actually been there twice, this year in the heat 🔥 of june and also last summer. Highly recommended this. Nice filming

Visited many times over the years & always an evil presence there. Even a man who was a prisoner of war said he sensed something more evil there then he did in the prison camp x

Beautifully shot . I thought the dog left the tunnel yet they found the remains of a man and his dog ?
Thanks Michael - the thinking is the dog may have gone back into the tunnel to search for his owner once the storm set it - hence (in the end) trapping them both inside

Yes they did road works at the cross roads about 50-60 years ago & found the skeleton of a man & a dog where the tunnel once ran x
The drone footage is great, but the "firehoseing" on the ground makes me dizzy.
