- Leading up to the Obi Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series is the perfect time to talk about the much maligned at the time but now somewhat beloved Star Wars prequels. And we will do that next week however this week we take a look at The Phantom Menace video game from 1999. Aiming to replicate the look, feel and adventure of the film it manages to do some of that some of the time somewhat. Thanks for watching!

#StarWars #ObiWanKenobi - Zábava
Jeez, imagine the madness that could ensue if these two ever played Lego Star Wars together...
Imagine
Epic
If they were going to do a Star Wars game leading into the prequel trilogy I wish they had done the original Lego Star Wars game that covers the full PT since the new LSW game came out last week. It would've been great brand synergy.
PLEASE DO IT!
YES I NEED THIS NOW
“I’m Qui-Gon Jinn. I’m a murderer” Classic Star Wars line
"I also have a particular set of skills..."
"i can kill anakin if youd like" XD
I've seen him in other movies, he's a murderer.
"I'm Obi-Wan Kenobi. Youve seen me in the originals and maybe the TV show" yet another classic line. People fault George Lucas for his dialogue but each line is drenched in meaning and purpose
Who's gonna stop me? I'm a murderer!
"We're actually big fans, of making fun of that dipshit" is the funniest joke in this whole video, I nearly choked.
Joke?
@Gods Hand Right? The only joke here is how long it's taking to clear out the square and erect the national razor
I love how James avoided swearing by saying ‘what the Swiss’ but when the game (rightly) accused him of cheating his true Aussie came out and he shouted ‘get fucked’ at the game 😂
I was mad but the idea of a 40 minute caravan of garbage has satiated me for the time being
I’m still mad. But I understand
The fact Maso didn’t know obi wan had a ponytail proves he didn’t watch the film so they didn’t record it! I still don’t believe it
"Who's gonna stop me? Are you gonna stop me? Are you gonna stop me? Who's gonna stop me? I'm Qui-Gon-Jinn I'm a murderer!" Definitely my favourite Qui-Gon-Jinn quote.
I was disappointed mason didnt say his famous line "hes got a thermal detonator" in a high pitched chimney sweep accent
the budget couldn't afford another appearance by Tom Holland.
"I'm Qui-Gon Jinn! I'm a murderer!"
The one thing Anakin learned from Qui-Gon
This sounds like the most fun James has had in a video, ever.
"We're doing the game because the movie needs another week to be finished"
*flashbacks to Batman Begins*
I have been scorned before
I love James enthusiasm while playing this game, he’s pretty much enjoying his time nice! Nice to see him have fun
Ahhh, a prequel CoG to the prequel CoG. Well played.
"Are Droids sentient?"
Actual Clone Wars Droid dialogue:
"You said we'd be safe back here."
"Come on. There's three of us and only one of him."
"It won't matter."
Droid proceeds to accept imminent death.
I remember this being one of the first 'realistic' games I played as a child. I didn't remember much about this game, except for being horrified when I made Obi-Wan fall into the fans and get sliced into chunks! I was wondering if you guys would do the same during this video... and now, at 27 years of age, I felt slight PTSD upon having my nightmare revived 🤣
The real phantom menace was the friends we made along the way
I remember playing this on PS1 when I was maybe 5 or 6 and doing the first level over and over again because I either didn't know how to save or didn't have a memory card. Good times
Same for literally every game I owned until I got a PS2 😂
as an adult i find myself realizing that i probably beat like 2 games out of the hundreds i owned as a kid because i was extremely stupid
This was me for so many games
I remember dying to those droids in the ducts a lot than never beating the second level
Exactly the same for me 😂
we need an extended version of that victory song from the finale
I love that this is just James going mad and showing Maso all the people he can kill and laughing maniacally.
James yelling he's a murderer, good stuff. 😂👌🏾
This game brings so many fond memories for me. My favorite all time gaming memory is when my brother and I started our own "game within a game" using a save point on Tatooine and going on competing runs to see who could slaughter the most people before getting killed. One of the keys was to not accidentally kill Anakin or Padme, because that was an automatic game over.
When I realized how difficult it was to beat Maul, I replayed the entire campaign, not using a single rocket launcher to destroy any tanks in an attempt to save them all for the Maul fight. When I got there though it had reset all my ammunition values. That was 9 years ago and I've never really recovered from it.
Edit: nevermind, guess I'm just an idiot
This game was on my mind literally yesterday, and this episode was absolute fucking chaos. You boys absolutely make my day sometimes.
when James yelled at the Cheater sign, I lost it
For a second I thought we got Twilighted again, but after hearing a 40 minute episode is in the works, I am happy
My god this brings back memories. Had the PS1 version. Can still remember the cheat for invincibility and level select from since I was 9 (I’m 32). The Mos Espa level is fantastic. You could kill literally everyone and have the entire town after you. They had some cracking one liners too. One of my favourite childhood games… also you can actually kill every one in Tatooine. Eventually you will just be walking around an empty town
Wipe them out. All of them. -Darth Sidious
The amount of times I accidentally failed the Tatooine level because I got tempted to force push a random NPC into a wall. Then a Gamorrean would chase you with their big axe. You could also kill Jabba if I remember correctly.
@@jackrichardson4089 ‘your a no good killer!’ Yeah you could kill jabba. My favourite was the guy that whenever you walked into him he would scream ‘stop pushing me!’
The health packs and health bar were really a great addition in the prequel films.
James, I just wanted to extend a personal thank-you for this vid. I was having a pretty shit one, up until my lunch break when I saw this had dropped. And let me tell you, the realization that my life and work have purpose, value, and meaning simply because I am *not* destroying the planet like Elongated Muskrat? That is exactly the shot in the arm I needed to turn this week around.
Wait as long as you’re actually doing the movies I don’t feel as tricked 😂😂
They are going to alternate between game and movie for the next 6 weeks
@@OldManYellsAtClouds yeah and it made me mad cuz he ended up saying that doing the movies over 6 weeks with video games in between was way harder
@@fan1360 I just love caravan of garbage in
General these 2 are hilarious
I remember being really taken aback by the Gungan levels playing this as a kid, nice to see it somewhat holds up.
Always love the video game caravans of garbage!
There was a moment that googling “Wingsey Snoutor” would return results of Watto and Nick Mason
I almost sustained a neck injury getting to my phone after getting the notification for this video. Don’t ask, just know I’m glad to be watching this video… with no neck injury.
How betrayed do you feel now?
If you want an accurate game to play for Episode 2, I’d say Skywalker Saga has a great recreation! Or if you want what I want you to play, make it Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight, which is kind of an Episode 2 in it’s own way! Great time, totally understand why this happened instead of Ep1, but I’m still forever broken in trust because of Twilight, which I also enjoyed the CoG episodes for.
Or just angrily look at a jar of sand for 20 minutes?
The Complete Saga does as wel
Or Jedi Knight II, Jedi Outcast, or as I call it Dark Forces Episode 2 Jedi Knight Episode 2 Jedi Outcast. Also known as The One Where A Velociraptor With A Lightsaber Pretends To Murder Your Girlfriend So You Become A Jedi Again A Little Bit.
No way they gotta play the 2D side scroller Attack of the Clones on the Gameboy advance
You guys are the biggest trolls on CZcams and you somehow don’t even mean to do it. Love it
25:48 Darth Maul might not be the hero we want but he's the hero we need
My vote goes for Shadows of the Empire N64, completely unrelated to obiwan but a very on brand thing to do for this here channel
I always listen to you guys while I'm driving around in my car and I'm a massive Star wars fan so 40 minutes of phantom menace talk is like a wet dream for me. I wish I could afford your patreon but I'm having a baby in 20 hours, so all resources are going towards that LOL.
Good luck bro!! I hope everything goes well.
Wish y’all the best of luck with the youngling (:
@@user-kn6dq8uw2p thank you!
@@Cvmpbell This is youngling 2, so everything should be a breeze lol.
That is a fair reason
I actually love this game especially the Tatooine section. It's also weird that the game let your character kill every NPC "and not just the men but the women and children too."
Sorry had to quote attack of the clones.
Child murder was surprisingly common in games of this era
@@johntonssen7231 I know lol. It's kind of odd in hindsight. The craziest example I can think of was the first Deus Ex game on PC and PS2 not only could you kill them in that game but you could move their bodies and throw them around to hide them if you wanted to. I never tried to do this but I found out about it by accident when there was collateral damage in a firefight. Game developers just did whatever they wanted back then it was a crazy time.
I like this alternate take of EP1 where hero Darth Maul saves Anakin from self proclaimed murderer Qui Gon Jin
I love that James, mostly due to nostalgia, is clearly just genuinely a fan of this game
Yeah, I've learned to never trust James again, I could be halfway through an actual Episode I review and I'd still expect it to turn into a review of the movie Jumper instead.
They should review Jumper!
Don't give them ideas!
This is a underrated game, especially the PC version. I remember getting the demo with some Kellogg's corn flakes. Glad you included that iconic line in the end of the video! 😂
I have no shame whatsoever in admitting that Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is my most❤️favoritest Star Wars movie of all time...🤘🏼💯✔️
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster back in the day and I absolutely loved it. I don't know if I just got older, but games today are just not fun like they were when I was kid (not to sound to much like a boomer). Those games were just a lot harder and rewarding because you couldnt just go online and look up a walkthrough or tutorial. This brings back a lot of fond memories. Good times!
Disappointed to discover this isn’t actually a critique of the 2009 video game adaptation of Twilight..
“Video game adaptation of twilight”
……what?
you just blew my mind! that would have been hilarious!!! they keep baiting us with gold and giving us twilight!
I remember as a kid spending hours downloading this demo on the family computer and playing the first level over and over again, good times.
I love this game. Me and my friend next door used to played through the whole game on his computer. It was so janky, but it was the best game that we had back in the day.
Such a big part of my childhood I didn't even know you guys did a video on this
19:40 not necessarily a reprising role YET- but one of the most prolific and recognizable VAs from everyone's childhood, Grey Delisle plays padme/queen amidala, which she would go on to play in the 2003 star wars: clone wars series!
I’ve gone from really disliking all the prequels (having them seen them as a kid) to bloody loving Phantom Menace. It absolutely slaps.
I can't think of a single thing to like in the Phantom Menace.
@@Bloodynine606 For me it's the aesthetic of the prequel era, the set, costume and prop design. The music is fantastic. It's fairly light hearted and its full of heart. I've just come to appreciate what is does do well.
@@benvids its also incredibly poorly written, directed, and acted.
The Phantom Menace is the only one out of the three Prequels that I actually like... probably because I was 8 when it came out and I was already a mega Star Wars fan.
But Podracing and Space Devil Two Sword Man were definite highlights of the entire thing.
@@benvids The aesthetic of the Prequels would be fine if it wasn't so far away from what we see not twenty in-world years later in the Original Trilogy.
The Prequels look and feel like they're set thousands of years before, deep in the Old Republic timeline. It's really inconsistent with the universe previously established.
I'm so genuinely excited about this! A 40 minute Caravan of Garbage video on the Phantom Menace is all my heart has desired for years. I hope you guys will get to the Revenge of the Sith game. I had it for years and it was my favourite StarWars thing till Fallen Order. Only a mild exaggeration.
I had this game on PSX and played the shit out of it. Heaps of fun back in the day.
I remember having this game as a kid and I'm pretty sure I soft-locked myself somewhere on Tatooine and never actually got any further then that, so this is the first time I've ever seen the Darth Maul stuff.
Can't wait for next week, it's exciting for both of you to finally do a COG on a Star Wars movie
If you’re interested, they talked about all the prequels on their podcast ages ago!
It's always a nice treat when the boys play a video game for Caravan of Garbage. Even if this episode was not necessarily planned, I hope they never stop sprinkling in a video game episode here and there!
This is genuinely the most joyous I’ve ever heard James I love it
I loved this game when it came out. I still have a copy. I should replay it.
I enjoyed exploring the settings. especially wandering around Tatooine.
I loved this game. Spent 100s of hours as a young kid on it. Never got past plying as Obi wan or worked out he has a gun
I forgot all about this game. I loved playing it on the playstation. The RPG elements were so much fun and you could just murder everyone in the game lol. Great stuff. Glad you guys are doing this!
Oh the “all my prices” vendor… that line of dialogue will be forever burned in my mind. Great game!
"Now, this is pod racing!" *-Jake Lloyd*
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a video game and the actual movie interchangeably for the next 6 weeks.
They already said they'll be doing that for the next 6 weeks! Game, movie, game, movie, etc. Confirmed at the end of yesterday's podcast
I love this game so much. I'm replaying it again now after over 20 years. I think it's more fun now than it was back in 1999 when I was 14.
This was awesome, hearing masons banter while playing wraps up nicely!
Every saga has a beginning
You guys should totally play the clone Wars video game from the GameCube. It was not as good as rogue squadron but it's still an awesome vehicle shooter.
I loved that game, I need to find a decent emulator...
Wasn't there an Episode 1 version of Rouge Squadron on N64 where you're a Naboo fighter pilot?
@@Gzilla313 Yes, the Naboo Starfighter, it was faster than the X-wing, you had to input the cheat code
@@tigerbread78 no, not using the N1 in Rouge Squadron, but an entire Naboo Starfighter game. It was called Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo.
@@Gzilla313 It was disappointing
Love how you needed an extra week for a 40 min video, and instead gave yourself the easy task of editing a 30 min video 😂 love the game!
That cover of the celebration music is what the music music industry needs
Perhaps the real Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Caravan of Garbage were the friends we made along the way...
Genuinely missed you guys looking at absolute garbage licensed video games
I'm glad there are other people excited for Monkey Island! I'm ready for expanded lore on Guybrush's fear of porcelain
18:09 - James' version of the gungan celebration song is significantly better than the original John williams version. I wonder how many victory orbs will be photoshopped onto pictures of James on twitter now.
I despise the prequels, but the commentaries you guys did on them has become my comfort watch, much like the show 'The Office' is to many others. I always assumed that would be the last time I'd hear you guys talk about them. So knowing there's going to be over an hour of Caravan Of Garbage on them is almost as nostalgic as the movies themselves. Cheers m8's, Love ya.
As a fellow human being who doesn't understand the hype around Elon Musk, I must say I appreciate you weeding out the Musk fanboys who think he's actually done anything noteworthy beyond having money.
Elon..Musk..can..speak..with...big...gaps.bet.ween...his...words...can......you?
How dare you! Elon invented electric cars, and rockets, and Twitter!
Played this when it first came out and have a very vivid memory of dread from it.
Finally got through the awful Qui-Gon parts mission mentioned in the video, got to the next level, and the game crashed almost immediately.
I hadn't saved it since the start of the Qui-Gon mission, and I wanted to cry...
This was one of my favourite games as a kid. I still love it
Man do I love that you guys dog on Elon Musk. The dude isn't Tony Stark, he's Justin Hammer's IT guy.
If Disney remade the Prequels, do you think Episode 1 - 3 would be so much better?
A big no.
I’ve waited my entire life for this review… thank you 🙏
i love watching you guys play video games!
Anyone that says the prequels are good is stuck in nostalgia cause, without Google searching, most of us can’t explain the plot of this movie.
Revenge of the Sith is literally the best Star wars film
The plot is straightforward. Trade federation causes crisis, Palpatine takes advantage of crisis.
Way better than the Disney films.
Did anyone *really* want a CoG on the movies? There really isn't anything more to say about them at this point.
My introduction to star wars and my favorite it sparked my lifelong love for a galaxy far away
I spent so much time on this game as an 8 year old. Loved it. Except the levels where you have to protect the queen. She doesn’t even try to run or hide or fight. She just stands there and lets people shoot her. Including her protector ;)
Aw man this brings me back! I had this game for the playstation, but I didn't have a memory card, so I had to start over everytime I played it, that TC-14 interaction is seared into my brain. Could never make it out of the federation ship. Good times
Want to highlight the fact that James was instantly able to recall from the dark recesses of his memories the celebration music at the end of the film. Why would someone need to remember this!!?
This was literally my favourite game as a kid and nearly what my pantaloons when I realised we were gonna get nearly half an hour of you dudes playing it. You gotta play the clone wars game for episode, another classic
You get a big'ol like for that charming rendition of the victory music.
I was fully expecting moulin rouge in another twilight Batman begins subversion - and even those expectations were subverted 😂
This is the best birthday present I could have ever asked for, thank you James Sunday Movie and Mason
Remember getting this after getting my first laptop in my Freshman year of college in Spring of 2000. Miss those days.
Force-pushing Darth Maul until he falls, that's exactly what my impacient 11yo self always did!
I absolutely loved this as a kid. I think i can remember some of the cheat codes as well.. one of them changed the camera to over the shoulder which was pretty nuts at the time
I've never given this much thought, but now that I see it again...I can't believe they opened the movie with "The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute." I'm surprised I didn't immediately fall asleep each of the 5 times I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. (I was young and caught up in the magic and desperately trying to convince myself that the movie was better than it was.)
There were some pretty awesome games to come out of the Prequels era. I remember Jedi Starfighter as being pretty friggin rad!
That tommy gun (weapon 3) with the fireball cheat was my go to move with this game. Used to see how many I could kill in Mos Eisley with unlimited ammo.
19:32 Other relatively big name artists that provided voices for this game:
Mary Kay Bergman - Who voiced a lot of the female characters in South Park up until 1999, and eventually kinda created their attitudes. She is the original singer of "Blame Canada" which was nominated for an Oscar. This game was one of her last released appearances prior to her unfortunate early death in 1999.
Clint Bajakian - Who composed music for many of the early LucasArts games and sound design. Continues as a pretty influential video-game composer and sound producer to this day.
I love the way Australian folks pronounce "1999" it's so fun
Can’t believe you didn’t feature the great quest to find Tomo. The greatest video game quest in all of video games history. For shame !!
I would love to see you guys go through Herc’s Adventure! Wow, what a hidden gem that game was. I have tried to find a little Diablo-light game like that with the charm and fun that @hercsadventure had. Any new fan base you guys would add to that would be just amazing.
Additionally, not to detract from good ol’ Herc’s Adventure, but do you have any intention to do the Lucas Arts Entry into the vehicle demolition games akin to Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8? Star Wars: Demolition was a surprisingly fun and very unique take in the genre. I’d love to hear your take!
