This was quite interesting. I’ve never had a Birkin. But I like weird plants, especially those with a interesting caudex. So I’m thinking no don’t cut it! Remove the lower yellowing leaves, clean up the nice thick stem ( wonder how old the plant is?!) and definitely repot it. Don’t think anyone has a Birkin tree...😂 Im curious if leaving it uncut would continue the whiter leaves, while having a bigger plant. But what you did is cool, I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s happening to both plants in a few months! 🌱 But I’m especially curious about the stub in the prop box, which looks fine by the way. I would bury it in the sphagnum though to keep it moist. Oh and your background is nice! Suggestion- move that gorgeous purple Oxalis to an end of your shelves if possible. The dark purple color would be really eye catching in the background. I love Oxalis, I wish more you tubers talked about them! Nice video. A self-heading philodendron, which is what the birkin is, will loose its bottom leaves as it matures, it is totally natural for this to happen.
Have you tried to either sterilize the end you cut with hydrogen peroxide or sealed with wax? Both are supposed to help minimize rotting. Otherwise, your philodendron birkin is beautiful!
Yes, I’ve tried sealing with wax before but it would still rot; the wax made it worse by harboring more bacteria while in water. Perhaps I didn’t do it right! 🤔
Yes! I had a bad infestation and tried many methods but what really worked for me is bottom watering with diluted Bonide Tree & Shrub Insect Control. It has the same active ingredient as their systemic granules, which a lot of people like to use for fungus gnats. The bottom watering works great because the fungus gnats like to lay eggs in the top 1-2” of soil, so bottom watering allows the topsoil to dry out any nests that might be lingering. I have been gnat-free for months, but I recently saw some flying around again so I need to re-apply the insecticide.
@@SuchPlants Thanks, you're the first plant person to ever get back to me on this.I definitely know letting the top couple of inches of the soil dry out works, because I had a plank infected, and took it out side to let it dry out because I could save thought cuttings. I notice after drying out a couple of weens, fungus gnats were gone.
It’s a proprietary product from a local nursery, Star Nursery, located in AZ, UT, and NV. But you can try an alternative, Superthrive. They both do essentially the same thing. 😁
Hi please can you tell me the ratio of water to hydrogen peroxide that you use to clean the roots and how long did you leave the roots in the solution for? Thanks.
My Birkin is so tall! I sometimes wonder if I should chop and prop cuz she is kinda wobbly (needs support to stay upright). Are you using a piano bench? 🎹

Yes too much variegation and the whole leaf will crisp up one day. That’s actually happening to my ficus tineke! 🥲

Hi Jacquie! I eyeballed a mixture of about 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water and let the roots soak for 5-10 minutes.

In my experience, curly leaves usually mean humidity is not high enough or soil is getting too dry.
