I remember watching the 1990 F1 race from Monza when Derrick Warwick crashed on the first lap.
Back the according to the rules, if you damaged your car in a crash and had not completed the first lap and the race was red flagged, a driver could go back to the pits and get into a backup car and continue.
Warwick got out of his car, sprinted back to the pits and got into his backup car and continued.
Unfortunately his clutch only lasted 15 laps and he retired from the race.

There was a similar incident with a driver crashing his car, running back to the pitlane and getting into the spare care, the team principal walked up to him to ask him if he was alright to race and the driver pretty much went "Yeah, it'll be fine, just tell me, is the first corner a left- or right-hander?" so the team principal pulled the guy out and sent him to the medics.

During his medical check up with Prof Sid Watkins, the Prof apparently removed some gravel from his ear.

Kenny Brack was in rotational force.

It just boils down to experience. Plain and simple. Granted, you do run across some guys who have money AND THEN find out the hard way they have no talent. In Andy Farr's case the only experience he had going that fast in a race car was when the car crashed in this video. The car hadn't been running right all week.
He was the first champion of the CASCAR Super Series, which is now the NASCAR Pinty's Series. He had the talent and the qualifications that many others have had to take that next step. His only ARCA experience up to that point was in the 77 teams backup car, in a 200 lap race on a 1/2 mile track where he had won a championship at. He would have an impressive finish if his idiot crew chief (YEAH, IT WAS ME) hadn't put him in a bad spot.
(I made up for it. Kind of. I recommended him for the 77 car. The downside of Daytona being the first race of the season. It can make you or break you.)

In most cases, especially oval tracks, there is no time. With instinct in slamming on the brakes first, and realizing that isn't going to work, it's too late for Plan-B. When I was racing, I always put my main battery disconnect switch 3 inches short of arm's length on an interior panel that my hand could slide across.
I would never have to look for it. Out stretch my arm, and slide my hand across the sheet metal so my hand hits it without having to look. Never needed it in that kind of a hurry, but it was there, and as quick as possible to get to it. A lot of racing organizations have a specific place you have to mount it so the safety crew knows where it is on every car. No on every stopped me from having two of them running in series so its OFF no matter which one you hit.

I can speak for the ARCA videos a little. We as people involved DID care about what we put on the race track. I was a crewman and spotter for the 77 car. After the owner stopped running full-time. I became as ARCA official. Contrary to popular belief, in the days before NASCAR's recent acquisition of ARCA (and turning it into NASCAR Kindergarten) we did care. We did all we could with the trickle down parts and technology we had available.
One thing I always liked about ARCA was there was still some room for brain power and finding better ways that we were allowed to search for ourselves to find safety improvements. One's we could build and use ourselves instead of waiting for some higher ups to tell us when we are allowed to do something safer.
ARCA was the first in stock car racing to require neck collars and fire resistant gloves. Now, the neck collars did have their drawbacks. The Simpson Hybrid (my preference) and HANS devices do a much better job supporting the head and neck. But we used what was the best available at the time.
Experience will always be the biggest difference that there ever was for us. You either learn by seeing how others wreck, being wrecked, scaring yourself from almost wrecking, or being the one that wrecked.

Ray Evernham and a partner just bought the property rights and remaining assets, which include some cars, of IROC. They are reportedly thinking about putting on one race (for sh!ts and grins) in 2024. The problem I see is the problem IROC had it's last few years before. Logistics (getting the drivers people want to see all at one track, all at the same time), sponsorship, and a good enough value TV package.

I have a problem with a lot of the crashes on here, mainly to do with safety. It’s baffling how these motorsport organizers still allow concrete and metal barriers, besides NASCAR. SAFER barriers work. It’s been proven time and time again. They rarely break, they don’t split, and they’re a helluva lot softer than metal and especially concrete. Tire barriers I guess make sense but they still aren’t good. Non-oval motor sports need to get with the program before another driver gets killed.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 Před 4 měsíci

Safer barriers strong points are for when they are up against the edge of the track. Properly set up tire barriers and Armco work well when you are far enough away that you aren't as concerned about bounce back into the paths of other cars.
That being said, Mt. Panorama could certainly use some, except the fact that it's already very narrow at those spots.

idk about the Eric McClure crash. All things considered, I honestly can't think of a single harder hit.
Theres no slide like most of the crashes, just driving head on at full superspeedway pace, and without any fancy airborne dissipation, just *stops* and then slides sideways.
