Learned this in grad school. Never give anything away for free because it minimizes the value. If you charge a small free, they feel they are getting a deal and are more likely to purchase. Thank you for sharing that!
You are KILLING IT with all these great business tips and information to transition from hobby sewing to pro. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community.
You are SOOOOOO right! You've inspried me. Though I don't have a sewing business, I do sew A LOT for other people. I am printing out a sign for my sewing room: "If I sew for you, what will you do for me?"
Wonderful information and perspective! I am using this summer out of college to try to grow my sewing business, and I had been wondering if I've been pricing myself correctly. You've got me doing a lot of thinking with your comments about focusing on creating a brand image. Thanks for this video!
omg, your videos have changed my way of weaving things. before I had the problem of charge people for my handmade clothes, and now I see why my handicrafts have never been respected. Thanke you so much
I can truly relate to under pricing yourself. I did that the 1st time I did a wedding dress for a friend of my husband's. When I first stated my price she gave me an ugly face but I stood my ground and she agreed. Then I realized why I was undercharging when we had to do so many fittings for taking out and in. Along with the additional hand work that needed to be done. It was a lesson well learned.
I had no idea you live in the DFW area, I do as well. Thank you for this video, I had this same conversation with my good friend a few weeks ago. Both of you have really helped me to change the necessary things to build my brand and attract clients. Keep up the great work!
As usual great video and great info. The example you gave about the $12 item made sooooooo much sense. I will definitely start to value my work more. Thank you so much.
Llechor Williams what is the absolute equipment you would recommend for starting a home sewing business? Love your videos, womderful advise and information. Trudie
Do you ever hear, "Oh, I'd totally pay $5 for that"? Or $20 or some other small price that undervalues your gift/skill and insults you? Of course I'm thinking, "Oh, but I wouldn't sell it to you for that. You'd have to pay what I charge if you want it because I value my time and skill even if you don't." Now, I do realize that my item may not be worth a hundred bucks or something. But my time alone is worth more than $5. The MATERIALS alone cost that, or more. Smh. One of these ladies (my sister n law) of course wanted 11 of these sets to give to her sisters and friends for Christmas. (Sorry, I NEVER rant but guess I needed to comment to let it out.) Thank you for talking about branding in this video. That's an important part of the process to consider.
All good stuff, I have 2 philosophies on Free, first of all, its a dirty four letter F word and people do not value what they don't pay for. I live in Mexico and the fabric choices at times can be limited but with the right amount of imagination, you can make it work. The fabrics standard run between $0.50 to $4.99 a yard. The issue is shipping if you want to sell in the States. Thanks for such great info! I'm just now considering a sewing business so this has been super helpful.
Thank you! One thing that I may add to your video: Even though you may have a resale license, you most likely will not be able to purchase wholesale from some wholesalers unless you purchase by the bolt. So sewing companies that are starting out have to get creative with their fabric and trim resources.
This is a very impressive and informative video on all factors to consider when pricing homemade goods. Thank you very much for sharing your experience
This is some great info. Thank you for sharing. I could definitely use the info. I've underpriced many times and need to get on track for future plans.
Hi, I 'm glad for the networking reach you've extended. I'm starting my business from the ground and have little personal overhead[ children, various obligations } I'm willing to acquire a studio and sweat the discomfort of being single male in a studio virtually alone most times. I'm willing to go fully focused into full time tailoring and creations. I'm in the DC region and the market is available to prosper. What are some of the drawbacks to such isolation to the craft?
Absolutely loved this video! I needed to hear these tips, especially about BRANDING. Never thought about it until you kept hammering that point home but you are so right- makes such a difference in terms of pricing. Oh, and btw "affluence" is pronounced with the emphasis on the "a" at the beginning of the word (similar to "influence"), not with emphasis on the second syllable like how you said it. Not trying to be mean or troll you at ALL, I swear, but it just kept distracting me every time you said it! Subscribing to your helpful channel now and thank you so much for sharing :)
thank you so much for this information. I was grappling pricing. I had a really sick feeling when I produced a garment and virtually gave it away. I have worked that mistake out hoping never to let emotions to get in the way. While folk take advantage of free, I found that asking for a nominal fee for instruction/lessons can yield the same outcome.
I am hoping that I can find and use the podcast. I am not familiar with podcasting but I will give it a try and let you know what I prefer. However, I love this platform. You are awesome!!!
Thank you for this informative video, actually I've watched 3 and loved them all. I have a product that I made and gave away to family hoping that them using it would prompt sales, to no avail. Your words have given me courage to attempt it again. Thank you! on another note, a friend of mine who makes cos-play costumes. She prices differently, 3 times the cost of product plus hourly rate. What do you think?
I know this is an old video but I'm having a dilemma. I'm in the process of opening and online shop with handmade clothes. I don't have enough money to buy a bunch of fabric and the type of clothes I want to sell are usually unique to themselves anyway. So, I'm wondering if it's better to do thrift flip items because it's more affordable and it'll add some variety. What do you think?
Very good information. Thank you so much. I have done all this starting out and it made me depreciate myself as a sewer and designer. I opened the door but didn't walk through because of disappointment. I wonder...do you require full payment up front or on receit of garment?
Amen! I have a cousin who took a cake decorating course and she got so good at making cakes for different occasions. She has a few iron-clad rules: Full payment in cash.....no checks! No negotiating of the price....you either pay it or go somewhere else! She's in demand and she only does it in her time-frame......now that's the way you do business!!
You give great advice. But let me tell you… if you would've told me free....... chile, bye I would've brought my own sewing machine. Do you hear me? lol.
@@Stylesewme I totally agree! People who don't sew have no idea of what can and can't be done with fabrics.....once you allow them to buy it themselves you're setting yourself up for a round of Russian roulettes!

You're welcome! I'm so glad you came to that understanding about your value!
You have totally blessed me with these tips. I've been honing my craft and ready to start my own business. Thank you, thank you and thank you!!

It sucks to learn the hard way, but those are usually the best lessons! You're way less likely to repeat those same mistakes.
I like your pricing advice very much. It's more realistic than a typical formula this x that. Branding is the key for certain.

What an awesome video. Very insightful. My ears perked up when you said Dallas because I'm in Houston. Bless you and your endeavors!
What is the fabric scene like in Houston? I will make a road trip if I need to!

This is a very common rant, especially when it comes to family trying to get hook ups! You are not alone, Sis.
Ha! My family knows better than that. 😂😂

Says: "you're not going to care for a blouse you paid 12 dollars for"
me: "that's a luxury blouse hahahha..." (I don't got that kinda monies)

Well as I mentioned there are multiple factors in determining price, but, just from that tiny bit of info I can say that sounds about right.
Yes, it was super helpful! 👌
thank you this video really helped me x
Very informative
A useful video 👌🏻keep it up 👍🏻
Excellent
Thank you so much!
Thanks for your information. When you sew your garments for trade shows, do you make each of your garments in multiple sizes?
Yes, having a selection f best selling sizes for a variety of customers is always a good idea.
Excellent advice!!!! It is hard to price the items you make. Thanks for the tips. :-)
This video is so helpful. Thank you so much for sharing.
You're welcome, Pamela!

Hello Can you do an update on this video and how to price in 2022
Very good information. Thank you so much. I have done all this starting out and it made me depreciate myself as a sewer and designer. I opened the door but didn't walk through because of disappointment. I wonder...do you require full payment up front or on receit of garment?
Full payment up front.

Is this course still available?
You give great advice. But let me tell you… if you would've told me free....... chile, bye I would've brought my own sewing machine. Do you hear me? lol.
Lol. I hear ya!!!
How do I join your course??
Do you have any info on making your own labels to go in the clothing?
I don't. But, I have seen plenty of info on it on Pinterest and Google. Try searching it to see what you find.
I ordered some online they are woven and I was able to choose the font and colors. I'll look for the site
Question. Do you tell your clients how much you charge just for labor, and then say plus material. Because they may want to buy material themselves
No, because I never let them pick their materials.
