  • Matcha is a very important kind of tea in Japan, because of its relationship with the culture of tea ceremony.
Drinking matcha might be on your To-to list when you visit Japan.
But why does it have to be matcha that is drunk during a tea ceremony?
How is matcha different from other kinds of tea that makes it so famous?
So today, as a tea ceremony trainee in Kyoto, I will explain everything you need to know about matcha, including what kind of tea it is, its history in Japan, and its health benefits.
I will also introduce some delicious ways to drink matcha at home, from the basic way done in tea ceremonies to more casual ways to drink it in an easier to consume form.
You may have an image that matcha is a bitter kind of tea, but I’m sure this video will make you want to start drinking it every day.

Yes, matcha is amazing stuff. It saved me when I was doing my grad studies (in Japan.) I was often up half the night researching, etc. Drinking coffee made me feel edgy and anxious. But when I switched to matcha, I found I could concentrate, but still felt OK and could get to sleep afterwards (for a few hours at least.) And yeah, delicious too.

Gyokuro is best consumed before 5 pm, or before 3 pm if you go to bed early. It has around 120 mg of caffeine per 250 mL and it can keep you awake, just like matcha. Sencha has 40-60 mg of caffeine per 250 mg. I usually try to get all my tea drinking done by 6 pm. I have consumed sencha past that hour and it's kept me up a couple of hours past my bedtime.

The shading used for the cultivation of tea plants providing leaves for matcha is set up over a period of 3 weeks, with shade density increased every 3-5 days until it's at just over 90% for the last 3 days before harvest. At the beginning, the shade is light and the gradual increase is made to allow the plants to adapt to the shady conditions. Suddenly casting dense shade on the plants can prevent them from growing properly.
As much as I love matcha, I don't drink it all the time. I'm more of a sencha fan and Uji sencha is my personal favorite.

After seeing this video a couple of months or so ago, I got some matcha powder through amazon, and quite like it. In the heat of summer, I tend to add about 1/2 teaspoon of matcha, and about 2/3 teaspoon of sugar to about 6 fluid ounces of milk, and shake vigorously. But in cooler weather. I've found that making the matcha with warm or hot water, and adding some honey, and a little milk, makes it very, very yummy.

I really need to consider to change from coffee to matcha tea instead... That could help not to feel sleepy during night shifts at work. And if there is such good benefits from matcha then really there is no second guesses not to switch coffee for matcha.

I actually bought a matcha set and a tin of matcha the other day and I made my first drink today. I had it at my friends house and I love it! I also very much enjoy the health benefits. (it's kinda expensive tho but it's very worth it)

I love matcha sweetened with raw honey. It makes any Japanese food that more enjoyable.

I have a matcha tea set for a while now, but I still learned a lot from this. Soaking the whisk for example. Thanks!
But I wonder how good the quality is of Matcha that you can get everywhere now. You can get expensive organic matcha even in Austria at a drug store chain and at a bakery chain prepared like a big latte macchiato. I saw it in vegan ice cream too.

    Great video, Shogo.
By the way, I'm living in Tokyo now. I was wondering, are any of the green tea bottles they sell at vending machines or at combinis matcha? If so, what brands are they? I think the ones I've taken so far are regular green tea.
In any case, I'll try the bottle method as soon as I can, for sure! ^^

If a green tea drink has matcha in it, it will say 抹茶入り on the label.

I've been using a handheld immersion blender/milk frother and it mixes the matcha pretty well, albeit its slightly less interesting to watch :D

Interesting video. Question though, could Matcha being made in other forms besides tea? Even if just for convenience sake could it be like a pill or gummi or something, or does it lose something in other forms.
