- Ninh explains, how to do a custom spray paint job on your bass or electric guitar, easily, cheaply, and like a pro!
In this video, we're upgrading a Yamaha RBX374 and turning it from crappy silver and rust coloured, to a cool, custom, candy yellow and matte black finish.
Using nothing more than spray paint and sandpaper and a little bit of polish, you can give your project guitar a custom finish for less than £20!

I actually like that colour it's a great job dude!
TheAusGamer Thanks man, I appreciate the comments! Candy finishes are definitely the way to go! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Definitely the best video in CZcams for painting a guitar, this really helped me out
Anakin Skywalker Thanks man, I appreciate your comments. If you do this yourself, be sure to post a link here so that we can all see it! In the meantime, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Anakin, heads up, you probably want to look at youtube video "How To Spray Paint Your Guitar (NO SAND)"
Great video. speaks fast and and very focused on the important things. great job man. thank you!
+shlomi tal Cool, thanks man, I'm glad you approve of this video! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Nice video man, cheers. The bass looks great. :-)
+intheblues Thanks man, I appreciate the comment. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Great job man! I've watched so many videos that say 'how to' and they actually didn't show me 'how to'. You did. Thanks!
+Pedro H. O. Oliveira Cool, I'm glad this video helped you spray paint a guitar! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Thanks, that´s helpful! Great job on your bass!
rooguitar Any time! I'm glad you found this video tutorial helpful. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
This is a wonderful concise and to the point video! Well done! Especially the emphasis on not putting on the paint too thick! Very important I can say from 1st hand experience. :( And the emphasis on Do Not Rush! Spraying with a can, the nozzle makes all the difference. Some spray cans come with nozzels that dunk an enormous amount of paint on your guitar right away. Make sure you have a nozzle on the can that gives you the right kind of steady soft spray.
And a beautiful job on that bass by the way!
Marjoline Thanks, I appreciate it. And yes - find cans that don't dump paint onto your guitar. The Canbrush ones worked quite well until it starts losing pressure - so always start with fresh cans!
Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
:P don't rush.. (DRIPDRIP>>>)
Use dupli color automotive paint at a local auto parts store. It dries fast is glossy, and has matte/satin too. Lots of colors. Last time I looked they had at least 35+ different colors and more available for order. My local O'Riellys also makes up custom colors , some of them can be put in an aerosol can. Then you can have unlimited colors. Cheers,
That's an awesome tip, thanks very much!
Dude, that is certainly your bass now, love the enthusiasm, keep it up.
Perfect ! Just what I needed to know in a fast way. Thanks.
Thanks Pedro, I appreciate the comments. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Great video man! And I'm thankful that you're really responsive to the comments cause it's been helpful to see what other people had questions on. And I have a quick question too. I've sanded down the body a bit. Would it be ok to use an enamel based paint and primer spray for the color coat, and an enamel based spray for the clear coat?
Enamel is fine, it's just a lot easier to get wrong. Having said that if you do get it right, the results look pretty pro. Hope that helps?
that looks beauuuuttifulll
+Corbin pfuhl Hell yeah! Thanks very much for the comment on this guitar! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I love your videos. They are so full of great information. When I close my eyes and listen to your voice, I picture Ringo Starr!
I'll take that as a compliment. Wish I had Ringo Starr's money.
Thanks for the video, after 7 years it's still very helpful
Thanks for being reasonable, succinct (not another a 20+ minute video) and picking a sweet colour :)
Thanks! Check out my channel for more like this :)
Looks great m8
Thanks Chris, much appreciated!
I'm not going to pretend I agree with everything you said, but I love your editing work. Great video; far more concise than any of my work.
how did this dude keep the logo on the headstock?
You did a great job man! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jeremy! Please share and subscribe :)
I've got a question for you Ninh Ly. My guitar has a neck-through with a binding (ESP Ltd M-1000). I'd love to paint my guitar, but I'm afraid about the binding on the neck. Just really don't know what to do with it and don't want to destroy it. If I was to paint it, I must sand the whole guitar with the neck and binding is on the neck. What should I do? Some steps or advices? What spray do you use for painting and coating? Great video by the way:)
Hey, thanks for checking me out!
Firstly, thank you for the kind comments. Secondly, you play guitar waaay better than I do!
To answer your question: you're in for a rough time, but there are three methods:
1) Sand and paint the guitar as normal, but then scrape back the binding before you apply the final clear coat (there are several videos on CZcams telling you how to scrape back bindings).
2) Tape the binding with several layers of high quality masking tape (I think they call it 'plating tape'). You'll be spending quite some time covering all the bindings exactly and like I said, you'll definitely need several layers. Do NOT use the typical hardware store masking tape, that stuff sucks.
3) Remove the binding with a heat gun, sand and spray, then glue it back on (definitely not for the faint hearted).
But to be honest my friend, you have one hell of an expensive guitar and I would strongly consider letting a professional do it for you. I know at this jolly time of year that money is tight, and if you had a cheapo guitar, I'd say 'go nuts'. I personally wouldn't risk it with a nice guitar like yours, but that's just me.
Hope that helps?
Hell yeah man! Thanks for your quick response - you're faster than Usain Bolt! :D Well yes, actually it helped a lot:)
I think that you're absolutely right about my guitar and I feel the same. It was some of mine theoretical questions, especially about the binding stuff:D I will consider buying a cheap guitar in the near future and go nuts with it for sure. In my guitar I would buy only a brass block for the floyd rose to get more sustain and change the pickup, EMG-81 for EMG-85 in the neck position. The big brass block upgrade is expensive and I'm thinking about ordering it from a locksmith.
Make more videos about guitars man, a lot more than now:D Your videos are so good and pleasant to watch. Not boring for sure. Thanks for your words and keep up the good work!:)
Paranormal Guitar Channel
Yeah, best to either take it to a professional or not risk it. It's a REALLY nice guitar you have :)
I've always bought cheap guitars as I suck at electric guitar (but can play electric bass).
It also means that I don't get scared of trashing these things. I've toyed around with Floyd Roses and you're right to go with a brass block. I've had a cheapo Chinese knock off made with pot metal (that had no sustain AND no tone!), and I fitted a steel one to a friends' guitar that worked quite well. But brass is best and I'm sure a metal worker would make you one for about a fifth of the price.
I was going to do another video: "How to upgrade your guitar electronics & pickups. Pro sound, low budget!", but have been pre-occupied with other projects. But yes, I'll try and make more guitar videos!
Thanks very much once again, your kind words give me encouragement to make more of these things! Be sure to share this video! :)
i love that colour!!! it looks amazing mate! any recomendations for an ibanez rg760? its black atm and i want some kind of purple or blue
Basecoat silver, electric candy purple or candy neon blue, topcoat and you'll end up with one amazing guitar. All paints can be bought from Canbrush, good luck!
Had that same guitar. Absolutely fantastic. Best feel.
Yes it's great. Even better was Yamaha's previous models - the Yamaha 774 was very nice guitar in terms of feel. I actually own a Yamaha 775 (the 5 stringer) and it plays amazing.
Excellent video. Thank you. Your bass looks really nice after the paint job.
Thanks man, I appreciate the comments. If you try this yourself, remember to take your time and don't over spray!
Nice Job man, but how did you keep the "Yamaha" Logo on the head?
Well, you could be extremely careful and use some kind of tape and outline it with something like an exacto knife. Then again there's also decals which work as well.
but how did you actually do it to yours? I thought maybe you didnt change anything in the headstock, otherwise it would have mentioned it in the vid...
busted , actually, yamaha makes that color; he bought it new.
hi, great vid, i was just wondering if there are any brands of lacquer/primer that you'd recomend? is it best to use automobile lacquer or actual nitrocellulose guitar lacquer, im not looking to spend a ton of money, as little as possible that will do a good job
Awesome!! What I like about your videos is that you explain everything... great tutorial...if only others could copy your teachings ...
+Manuel Basurto Thanks Manuel! I appreciate the kind comments on these guitar videos. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I’m gonna try it. Great video🤘
Hey man, appreciate the helpful video, I was just wondering how many cans of primer/paint it took you to cover the body with enough coats so I can get a rough idea when I buy stuff
Thanks!
Jake Martin If you don't make any mistakes and don't over-spray it, a large can for each stage will do. Because I had to respray the guitar, I had to use double the amount of primer and buy a new colour. Other than that, it should be one can per stage. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
That's a great colour love yellow guitars :-)
Thanks man! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
that's actually amazing! is it a nitro spray paint? where did you buy it?
Very good straightforward advice. The color looks great!
Thanks Rex, much appreciated!
Wow, the after color was amazing, nice job
Maybe it's something stupid, but i really like your pronunciation (i'm spanish) good luck!
Why thank you! I try my best! Thanks for the comments, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
How did you paint the headstock? i might do my schecter but i dont know how i would do the headstock without getting rid of the logo. did you just tape over it?
DansSquad Channel Did you find an answer?
I think that yellow looks really cool! Great job.
JRPowellIIIMusic Thanks man, I'm glad you approve. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Thanks for an encouraging video . Bass looks really cool , well done .
+neil matthews Thanks Neil, I appreciate the comments. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Followed this exactly but on my drums. Looks great cheers!
That's so awesome! Painting drums is cool.
Well done, man!

Hey man! Thank you so much for your video. Tbh, it's one of the most comprehensive HowTo videos out there for painting guitars.
I do have a few questions though. Even though the paint I used was the Dulux Duramax Gloss yellow (In fact, I used Duramax for the primer and clear coat too), it still only came up a matte sort of colour. I'm not all that disappointed with this, but for future projects, it would be nice to know why it came out this way. Have you come across this issue before? Do you have any idea how to fix it?
Again, thank you so much for the video :)
+SeeYouSpaceCorgi You're welcome dude, I'm glad you've commented on this video. To answer your question: I was aware that Duramax was tough performance paint that dried like a matte finish? You can fix this issue by spraying layers of automotive clearcoat over it (or polyurethane), wet sanding and buffing to a mirror finish. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
+Ninh Ly I'm not entirely sure :( Even on the site it specifies that that particular colour is a gloss finish. I remember that in places that had a heavier coating on it were a bit glossy before I sanded it down, but I just sanded them down anyway. I'm trying to find out if the Duramax clear coat is polyurethane, but if not I'll find a specific brand. Thanks so much Ninh! Subscribed for sure!
SeeYouSpaceCorgi Cool, thanks! If you need any more help, just ask and I'll try my best to help you.
George Kaftan Oh yea, that'll definitely work. If anything, it'll be better than a guitar that was already painted. You don't gotta worry about sanding all of the old or unwanted paint off for ages. Best of luck to you my friemd!
Excellent video, very simple and very well done , I 'm working on my Stratocaster, and was afraid to paint with spray can , hahaha it was needed to see someone on youtube. muchas gracias compadre! greetings from Chile
P. valco Hello, thank you for commenting on this video. If you're working on an expensive guitar, BE VERY CAREFUL! Other than that - I think it'll look cool once you've done it! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Love it! Good Job bro!
Is that an rbx 374? I had that bass in yellow! Stock!?
+Luca Digioia I think in the US, they had a somewhat yellow one as stock. But it certainly wasn't Candy Yellow and it didn't look as cool as mine. But yes, it's a RBX 374. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I have that yellow one to, it has a very funky Pink pearlescent on it and didn't sell that great.
The yellow Version was only produced 1 or 2 years i think, which makes it kind of "rare"
But i think i have the previous model.... Still a great bass guitar
What mixture did you use to wet the guitar and sand it down?
Sergey Pareyko I'm looking through the comments for the same reason
Sergey Pareyko a little late, but a little soap and water.
Nice video. Thanks very much. And yeah that color turned out nice.
Thanks man ... yeah the colour turned out great. Candy paint is the way to go with stuff like this! :)
Awesome job dude and you have a great voice too!
Thanks bro, much appreciated!
haha tekken soundtrack :p
+EJ. Hell yeah Tekken!
Asian guy sounds British....blowing my mind!
+Jay B Ummm, thanks man! There's plenty of us Asian guys with British accents around here. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly I think it's because most Asians on CZcams are either Americans or British with an accent (kinda like Herman li) I'm sure the OP meant it in a humourous way
fancy a cuppa? YOU GO NOW!
sounds a bit northern? lol that part got me more than the british part XD
I'm from Manchester, he sounds like he's not too far from me haha
Ninh, great job on the Yamaha. I love the color. Unique.
+SixSentSoldiers Thanks man, I appreciate the comments! Yeah the colour is really cool. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Turned out FANTASTIC! Nice job man!

Cool job, love the yellow
To the point, no bs. Great vid!
I like the color. You did a great job.
+Kaycee Mattingly Cool, thanks Kaycee! I'm glad you approve of this guitar! I'm sure you could do the same (if not better) than I did. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
It looks great. It certainly is an interesting color. Good job!
Awesome job, the yellow color looks great.
Woanders One Thanks man, I appreciate the kind comments on my guitar. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Awesome job. Im having a go with gloss varnish instead of primer, and then spraying the paint onto that. Simply because I have a can. Hopefully it'll work
The MINUTE you said "If you're a lazy bastard like me" I hit that like button. Thank you, sir.
Just being honest man. And thanks! :)
great job..I've done it a couple of times and from what I've learned here did everything wrong I possibly could :-) Gonna try it again, following your instructions and see how it goes this time.
+Peter L Cool - I'm glad this video helped. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Nice clear tutorial. You gave me the confidence to do it! Thank you!
By the way, what type of paint did you use?
Great video! Precise instructions, clear voice, no “hums”, “mmmhs”, “uhs”, “ers”, no telling your life story, no clumsy sanding or vise-gripping your little tools. Nice accent 👍 Perfect!
Wow, thanks man, much appreciated!

Great video, very helpful, many thanks
thats a beautiful TRBX 304. love the colour. and thanks for the tutorial
Thetroublemaker619 Thanks man, I appreciate the comments. Yeah, the colour is cool and I highly recommend a candy paint finish if you do this yourself.

Great Tutorial! I'm going to go spray paint my 1958 Les Paul a nice bright purple now. Thanks!
Each to their own I guess.
Thanks bro.
Ninh Ly it was a joke lol it would half the value of the guitar
what I do is sand with a very light grit each layer of paint as well as the clear. you will get a real smooth shinny guitfiddle when done. Love the shirt!!
The paint came out really nice.
Awesome tutorial !
Thomas Pierre Thanks man, I appreciate the comments!Be sure help me out by sharing this video and subscribing :)
Thanks Ninh. I am in the painting stages of my Hot Shots commemorative guitar and the sanding part on the clear coat really helps as I do not want to see the bumps. Also, it looks like the waxing part is just the same as polishing headlights. I bet a polishing kit at the auto parts store would supply everything one would need.
Thanks Jim. Yeah, I got all my parts from an auto store ... and I polished using the same DA polisher that cars use. It's so much quicker! Good luck!
great stuff, i like it very much, keep it up, very articulate comentry.
Thanks Roy, much appreciated!
I've not made a guitar video for a while, but I'll be sure to come up with a new project soon!
Genius looks great.
If I ever do this to my Squier Telecaster Custom it is getting the shiny purple treatment. Love how yours turned out!
Awesome, thanks man!
Believe it or not, I've sold this guitar since then. But I'm hoping to start a new project soon.
@@NinhLyUK That's great to hear. Someone must have really loved that shiny yellow finish!
Apparently, they e-mailed me back saying that they actually saw this on CZcams and they bid because of it. Go figure?!
Looks great!!
Thanks bro, much appreciated!

Wow wonderful video. Gorgeous guitar.
Thanks bro!
Good video. I think you have the right balance of info, humour, tone and tempo. It pains me to say this but, I'm finding myself saying "Ooo...that's a nice colour". I had a bright orange Charvel once...was so naff it was good!
+mist3ral Hey man, thanks for the comments on my video. Any any guitar is a good guitar so long as it fits your requirements! Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

That looks great man! I'm think of doing a dark purple on a Les paul rebuild.
That would be sweet. If you manage to do a candy finish like mine, that would look amazing!
Good luck bro! :)
Thank you for the idea
hey man awesome vid man i love the finish! just wondering how you got the logo unpainted?
QUACKr123 Hey man, I used a Candy paint finish on top of the existing headstock. Candy finishes are transparent and the headstock logo was already there.
Failing that, buy some headstock decals from eBay or have them printed for you and just apply it after you've painted. Easy!
Hope that helps, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Nice job man!
+EpicJosh15 Thanks man, I appreciate the comments, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
you have some amazing videos, will you do a tutorial on how to swirl paint guitars or utilize stencils?
redcell Thanks man, I appreciate the comments.
As for swirling and stencils, probably not, although I am considering an airbrushing a guitar video.

my girlfriend owns the bass in this video! great work Ninh, looks way better in real life than in the video
Ah, awesome! I'm glad it went to a good home. Yeah, I'm not playing so much now so I've had to jettison some of my guitars. I'm glad your girlfriend likes this one. Cheers for the compliments!
Yellow is the best color. The bass looks so good.
Thanks bro, glad you like my guitar!
