The patch bay cables shown are used professionally, although you can use 1/4" stereo phone plugs they were not designed for patch bays and may damage the jacks in professional jack fields
So I understand you would like to see something on how to patch in effects to an audio board using the patch bay. While I am working on a tutorial on Decibels at this time I will look into covering this topic in the near future. As a suggestion, you can learn quite a bit from Mackie mixer manuals that you can download from their site, they do a good job.
Thank you for this wonderful video, OLE! I found it very helpful. As a follow up, I'm wondering if you can recommend where I can find an affordable punch tool. There are many punch tools out there. How do I know if I'm purchasing the correct one?
Great video. I just purchased the same patchbay you’re using In the video. I’m having trouble finding the correct idc tool, also what gauge tps wires are required? I’m only used to consumer grade cables from xlr and 1/4. If I need to run my I/O from my outboard preamps and compressors. Should I use the smaller idc gauge and solder the other end for my outboard I/O? Thanks so much
I see the confusion here, while musicians can and do use single circuit (mono) 1/4 jacks and plugs for patch bays every professional broadcast studio and recording studio I have worked in uses jackfields and balanced audio circuits. In my time I have built un-balanced audio systems, but that was in my early days. You can take a look at my tutorial on balanced audio for a better understanding.
my patchbay is ALready wired and they have 1p/4 in p/Iugs hanging from the back they do not have teminIaI the way across the but the bottom do tho it may be up/side down ii'm not sure how it wired how do i know
Wow, this channel have plenty of professional knowledge ! Very interesting for amateur radio enthusiast. Miss that is not continued, I hope everything is okay with author.
I am having fits with my punch down. The jacket keeps crushing the sharp pin edge instead of cutting it off. The only solution I have found is to pre-snip the wire on the end and not rely on the cutting edge of the pin. 🫤
This is the best tutorial abou patchbays over the net!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!
Explanation was quite simple and very easy to understand .. Thank you

Does anyone know where to get the exact tool used to punch the cables.... I can only find IDC punch tools that are for networking.
Thank you for the useful info ...
