    Thank you for this very helpful and specific video. Following your instructions I was able to easily download the software and then import my ancestry genealogy into it. Your information on how and why to do the import saved me so much time because I would not have known why to do it that way. Such a timesaver! I will now watch some more of your videos.

      Janet, you made my day. This is why I make videos. And, you're not alone with not knowing why to do the downloads in this way. I learned this about 3 years ago while chatting with Bruce Buzbee, the main programmer of RootsMagic. Since that time, I have to share the tips so others don't have to do the mess I did when I tried to sync my trees. So glad my time was well spent to save you a headache.

    I sync from Ancestry to FamilySearch in Ancestry. On a person's profile page, in the upper right corner click the FS logo. Choose "compare to FamilySearch" Then you can move sources, and facts back and forth between the two. Taking out the middle man. It may only be an option for LDS accounts, I am not sure about that.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před 2 lety +1

      That option is only available for those with an LDS partnership account. Bit thanks for sharing. I covered this in a previous video, but I welcome reminders.

    I've been syncing between RM7 and Ancestry. Do I need to start over with RM8? There are things on the Ancestry side that I've chosen not to have in RM and vice versa. Or - does the RM8 import of 7 include the tree sync status so I can continue seamlessly?

    • @filmgal2009
      @filmgal2009 Před 2 lety +2

      If you import your RM7 tree into RM8 your current Ancestry connection with that tree will stay the same as you have it now in RM7.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před 2 lety +1

      I believe Tammy is correct that the RM 7, imported into RM 8 should retain the same Ancestry connection.
      If it doesn't, then what you'll need to do is two fold:
      1. Download your Ancestry tree into RM 8.
      2. Important your RM 7 file into your new RM 8 file.
      3. Merge duplicate profiles with the RM 8 entry remaining behind.
      4. When you 'sync' your tree, you will only update changes you approve, which allows you to keep things on your RM tree on your desktop only.
      I hope that makes sense. I might make a mini video about this in 2022.

    Can you do this with the trial version of RM?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před rokem

      I think so. I haven't used the free trial in so many years since the cost of RootsMagic is $40 and that's cheap compared to all the other genealogically related products and services. I know what it's like to have a tight budget. For me, that was the best $40 and it is the cost of two date nights or is the amount my family members collectively spend on me for Christmas. So, either I will cover it or ask for this as a gift.
      That being said, the free version of RootsMagic is super awesome and has so many features. I remember that for several years (I've used RM for many years), that I got away with doing many things with the free version.
      The cost aside, I would suggest downloading the free version and then seeing what RootsMagic doesn't allow you to do. Then you'll know whether you need to save for the paid version or not.
      (BTW... I don't work for RootsMagic. I'm not a fanatic about their program).

  • @knockshinnoch1950
    @knockshinnoch1950 Před 2 lety

    I made the mistake of creating a family tree on MyHeritage and Ancestry. I was working between both- not a good idea- both are now very different as I updated info on one and not the other and vice versa! Maybe I'm just have to create a third tree then toggle between all 3 to transfer the data- sounds like a recipe for disaster while driving me insane!

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před 2 lety

      Keeping all the trees in sync is near impossible. My strategy is to figure out where my primary tree will be located and then used the paid website subscriptions for targeted research projects. Then, I migrate the data to the primary tree and clean out the project trees when I start something new.

  • @nicholasdupont2468
    @nicholasdupont2468 Před rokem

    My son has done extensive research on FamilySearch and has a tree there with 10+ generations back. But in the video you advised not to import more than 2 generations of ancestors to Ancestry (12:53). I couldn't tell what you meant by that the resultant tree would be "full of junk."

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před rokem

      I have found, working with my own tree and those of others, that it's best not to download the entire tree to RootsMagic or Ancestry at one time. It's best to work with a few generations at a time. You can always expand out the RootsMagic/Ancestry tree generation by generation when you have ensured that what you are migrating is accurate and no one else has made changes (since FamilySearch is a collaborative tree).
      Does that better explain?

    I bought a copy of RootsMagic 8 as soon as it was available. Every time I tried to download my Ancestry tree, RootsMagic 8 crashed due to limited memory. Family Tree Maker, which I also use, has problems with memory during sync as well, but it doesn't crash every time. Admittedly, my database is huge, but I would think that the software would be able to handle it without difficulty. I may need to buy a new computer with double the memory if this keeps up. I would like to use RootsMagic so I can upload my tree to FamilySearch. Any suggestions, other than trying to increase my computer's memory, or getting a new machine?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před 2 lety +1

      The memory crashing is likely the fact that you can't avoid downloading all of the media files associated with your tree on Ancestry. If you have a large tree, you're downloading every document you've attached to your tree. I've asked repeatedly for the ability for RM to NOT download the images. It would solve some of the problems you're experiencing. Perhaps another voice needs to submit a feedback request.

    • @chadkurszewski1967
      @chadkurszewski1967 Před 2 lety +1

      This is not a computer memory issue. It is a limitation of RootsMagic 8 that crashes with large trees (above about 15,000 people), regardless of how much computer memory you have. (I have 32GB RAM, with >24GB free, and it still crashes.)

    All I want to know is...does RootsMagic offer a Tree View? I do not like the pedigree view.

  • @RichardWerbin
    @RichardWerbin Před 2 lety

    RM7 would not do a one click sync with ancestry trees. Instead, it would bring down all the changed facts and ask you to review each fact and confirm that it was OK before adding that fact/person to your RM tree. Is that the behavior in RM8? Did they fix this?
    By contrast, FTM had a one click sync option and the ancestry tree plus the ftm tree would sync. It asked for a confirmation ONLY if there was a conflict.

    • @KennethFunk
      @KennethFunk Před 2 lety

      RM7 and RM8 do NOT sync with Ancestry, nor do they claim to. They function as described due to restrictions Ancestry has in place. FTM gets around this because they were once owned by Ancestry. I suspect that if MacKiev ever does a full scale rewrite, that sync functionality may no longer exist unless they have some special clause in the contract when they purchased FTM from Ancestry.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  Před 2 lety

      Richard... Kenneth has given you a great explanation. I probably should have clarified what "sync' means in the RootsMagic environment.
      Personally, I dislike the one click update option between RM and Ancestry. There are many times when living people are uploaded to Ancestry that I can't prevent a one click sync to prevent. Additionally, there are some facts I'm still processing from MyHeritage, Findmypast, and FamilySearch in RootsMagic that I don't want automatically updated to Ancestry.
      So no, RM 8 doesn't allow for auto syncing and flagging when there is a conflict.

    • @RichardWerbin

      This is what. RM8 says on their site.
      They seem to be claiming they do sync with ancestry trees.
      Using the new TreeShare feature, family members can then synchronize the latest changes and additions to both the online tree and their desktop computers.

    • @suzydelmage8290
      @suzydelmage8290 Před 2 lety

      Wow this is a lot of work to sync compared to FTM. It may be a deal breaker for me. It seems to require knowing what you changed on each tree between Ancestry and RM to ensure I choose the correct one to update. Making a lot of changes at once is an issue. Also, sometimes it shows there is a changed person but doesn't show what was changed so I cant accept any changes. What do I do with that?
