as someone who isn't the biggest fan of visual novels, i feel like i need to say this....
*this game is amazing and everyone should, at least, give it a try*

This game is hilarious. I love that flavor text said on one day can be referenced again another day, and you wouldn't get that continuation if you hadn't looked at it before!
And Date is a fantastic protagonist. He's so damn funny. Even if the horny jokes got old after a while, Date screaming about porno mags out of nowhere is always hilarious to me. Greg Chun must have had a ball voicing him, and you can tell by how good the English dub is that everyone had a lot of fun with this game.
And Aiba. Oh my gosh I love Aiba so much. She's precious and I will protect her with my life.

AI: The Somnium Files is tied with Zero Escape 999 as my all-time favorite visual novel, and one of my favorite games of all time. It’s funny, captivating, engaging, scary and downright gut wrenching. I know the sequel will most definitely flop in sales, but I’m grateful it exists at all.

One of my biggest, initial worries was that Aiba was going to be nothing but a serious, stoic, sexy AI character. But in the end I think I ended up loving her the most. I love that she can also be really silly and over the top at times and her dynamic with Date is great! They play of each other so well!
The character writing in the end is what I've loved the most in this game. Just clicking everything so I can hear some extra voice lines and/or re-occurring jokes was so much fun!
And I think the voice acting added a lot to it! It really elevates the writing and I think for the first time ever I prefer the English dub over the Japanese one (from the little bit I've heard/compared). Such stellar performances from all of them.

ah, who could forget dependable policeman Kuromi...
I became pretty obsessed with AI Somnium after discovering it only like 3 weeks ago... then I heard, by pure coincidence, that the sequel 'Nirvana' was being released, which I just finished... definitely entertaining, but did suffer a bit from sequel-itis, the first game's major accomplishment was having 'heart', sequels rarely can make that happen twice cuz they've become overly self-aware or conscious with time
I still think Date and Aiba make the best lead pair, and missed their main presence... I did notice a tonal change this time with a tendency to 'groan' in reaction to Date's perviness, rather than suggesting it was funny
I was reminded quite a bit of David Lynch's style...
btw, if anyone's looking for a recommendation for something sort of similar, check out Deadly Premonition

ATISF is one of my favorite games of all time. I finally discovered it a couple months ago, I think late July, and absolutely fell in love with all of it. I've played several other games that were fantastic this year, but when I think back to my experience of this one, this one feels special. It feels different and unique and very much its own. I feel the emotions I got from the game whenever I see it, whether it's grinning like an idiot or tearing up at the sweeter moments. I've set an alarm in my phone to play it again in January (I always wait at least 5 months between playing a game the first and second time so I can forget enough that it feels new) and I'm really excited for it and have been avoiding watching compilations just so I can really take my time and look at everything I might have missed the first time.
I've played a few other games I absolutely loved this year, in fact I played one a couple weeks ago that moved me to tears and left me feeling really satisfied, but coming back to videos about this, I just feel... honestly, the way I did the first time. This really happy feeling and this warm memory of one of the best experiences in gaming I've ever had. So yeah, I might have loved a few other games I played this year, but this tops the list by a mile. This one's special.
The sequel, on the other hand, that's a different story. A disappointing story... but I guess it's impossible to top something this good, and it wasn't a bad game. I really don't think it can be topped by any sequel. It's very special. So yeah, I guess I'm saying that it hit me in just the right way. And I think a lot of people can get past the dumb pervy jokes (most of which Date get called out for, which is where the real humor comes from) to the heart of it if they just give it a chance.

normally, I'm not one for tons of sex jokes in media, but I think the reason I give Ai a pass is because even the crudest jokes are taken with a sense of irony, like "yeah, we know this shit's ridiculous, just roll with it."

I literally just started playing this game. Not even kidding but I was about 30 minutes in and the first thing I examined in the office was a tanuki, only for my boss to say, "Do you think a tanuki's ballsack and stretch up to 10 feet?"
Unsurprisingly, I was taken aback. This whole time, the game portrayed itself pretty seriously and then out of nowhere, I got this piece of dialogue. Not complaining, but it definitely caught me off guard.
