- So the 338 Winchester Magnum is sort of the standard in 338s. And that one is, uh, sort of like the 300 Win Mag. It's a little bit shorter, but it's the same case - that's the belted Magnum case from H&H the 375 straightened out the walls, pushed it back a little bit to make it a 30-06 length case.
So it fits in standard actions. And push the, the shoulder forward quite a bit on it. So it has a pretty short neck, cetera, et cetera. So the, uh, 338 Win Mag has been the standard since the fifties. And it is considered to be just about the optimum elk cartridge out there. Real good for moose, a lot of Alaskans like it for bear as well.
And it's pretty successful in Africa.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

lt's probably right up there with shoulder surgeries, too.
And detached retinas
Not really, properly shouldered, and with a proper stance, none of the belted magnums are all that punishing. I feel that a 3in 12ga slug load "kicks" worse than any rifle cartridge under about 416 Remington.
It’s effective in Chicago as well
🤣
Us inuit like it for Narwhal, great caliber for narwhal and polar bear, idk about walrus, cause where i live no walrus
Great round
I really enjoy my 300 Weatherby magnum.
Never underestimate a 338 win mag
And the 300 grain bullet in ,338 Win made it very popular in India, West and East Pakistan and Nepal also.
Love the Elk photo in the background!
My son loves his 338 ultra mag.
He uses it in Alaska for the big moose.
Can always tell when the 250 nosler partition makes contact though i have used the 338 exclusivity for 35 years from deer to moose.
How’s ur shoulder
I have been trying 185gn Nosler Accubond and have yet to use it hunting but the results look promising
Shoulder is fine...lmao 4 months for you tube to make the loop. @MrJtin69
I have a .338wm and .338rum
Could there ever be a 338prc?
I think it’s next
There are the norma and lapua .338s that are designed for long range.
with the 338wm so difficult to find i am being forced to look to reloading. the problem is that component availability is difficult to source as well. i like nosler and Barnes but the hornady is often my only choice. questiin is is the cx bullet a good option
I will keep using my 300 Remington Ultra Mag
Can’t find ammo when are they going to make ammo again
It's definitely scarce
Ok Ron, I want to go Up or Down, and I am thinking the .338 or the .270. so where do we go, I am thinking longer range, (I am old and need good optics, 62 here) but love the fun of bigger cartridges, and then the price comes in, you have a video of the 270 versus the 30-06 and the energy out to long ranges and the 270 goes past it, so compare the 338 to the 270 at 5, 6 hundred yards ?
I’d say split the difference and go with the 300 win mag, but what do I know, I’m 14. Lol
Love .416 Rigby
.308 is a decent ‘all around’ cartridge.
After having , 6.5 cm, 7 mm rem.mag , 280 AI , 270 win , 30-06 , 9 3x62 and now new 6.8 western .
I always think why i shouldnt just have bought best rifle i could afford in 30-06 and called it a day . With reloading i do not need anything else.
If able to get rid of everything and keep just 1 finest rifle on 30-06 , 280 AI or 6 8 western i should be better off with more practice with just 1 rifle.
And for coyoti i should have one in 243 ( and get rid of 223 and 6.5 cm ) .
You know, I was thinking the same thing.... I've purchased so many different rifles over the years - all kinds of obscure cartridges that I can never find ammo for....
And a 30-06 with different loads could probably cover 90%+ of the shooting I've done...
and the darn ammo is always there taunting me on the shelves....
@@sdrizaI've made that same journey. Bought all kinds of rifles over the years only to trade them down the road for something else when all I really needed was my .30-06. And to be honest, for most of the hunting I do in New England I don't even need that. The deer I shot last fall was at 30 yards with a .44 rifle.
And my 45-70 military is the standerd for AWE CRAP my sholder.
Theres that" WIN MAG" WORD..WHAT HAPPEN TO 300 WINCHESTER MAGNUM
300 wm is more popular, but actually the 338 wm is the older of the two.
338 Lapua
Update, the .338 Remington Ultra Mag is the new ultimate elk cartridge, it makes the 338 win. look like a toy.
Before I knew about guns and bullets and only played video games, I thought 338 Lapua Magnum was the standard "big bore sniper" cartridge from a little game called CounterStrike.
What about .338 lapua
.408 cheytac! doesn't matter how big the gun is just have more energy at a distance if your shooting for targets at a distance.
Lapua
