Caster Gil is the best Gil. It's very interesting seeing the difference between Archer Gil (basically him in his prime, as a problematic teen) and his older self (a wise king that fight for the sake of his people and rebel against the Gods even if he is half-god himself because he believe in humanity). It's even more interesting seeing how Archer Gil basically doesn't do anything but throw his treasury against enemies, while Caster Gil fight only with his own forces and doesn't use any of his treasury weapons. Seems like Enkidu really rubbed on him.
Also, do you want to know how much does he value the Holy Grail? He uses it as a drinking cup for his beer. Yeah, that's right.

Gilgamesh pride is the only reason Shirou wins this fight; Gilgamesh was too proud to use EA against an unworthy rival. If you remember, during the Iskander fight, he said something on the line "Wake up Ea, a worthy stage has been set for you", since he considered Iskander an enemy worthy of his respect. That wasn't the case at all. He only tried to use it at the very end as a last ditch effort because he was getting desperate, but you can see from the closeup of his hand that even then he hesitated. He really didn't like Shirou at all, that mongrel.

I'm not sure even Ea would have helped. That thing is a natural counter to Reality Marbles, but it takes time to "spin up" and Shirou is constantly all over him. Unless he literally opens up with it as the first thing he does, any attempt to use it will end up exactly how we saw.

@@TheKain202I'm not sure it takes much time to spin up. We saw it annihilate the giant arm one episode earlier basically instantly. Gil lost due to him not using his full arsenal.
If we assume he was using all he has the fight would have looked basically like this: Gil starts off wearing his armor, making him impervious to any attack shirou can muster and one shots him using ea. As far as I remember his golden armor is stated to be able to take multiple hits from Excalibur, so shirou would be entirely outclassed, and that is with Gil not using is chains of heaven to restrain shiro.
As usual, Gil lost to his own arrogance.

A little bit of lore from Fate vn: anime isn't entirely correct regarding some things on Shirou vs Gilgamesh. Anime Shirou is able to best Gilgamesh in melee swordfight and says the latter isn't a warrior. However, per novel, Gilgamesh is still a Heroic Spirit and thus leagues above humans in wielding a blade. The only reason Shirou is able to counteract him is solely with UBW. Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon needs a little time to summon stored weapons. While UBW already contains stored weapons and can immediately counter whatever Gilgamesh brings up, by using item's exact copy.

In every route Gil dies due to his own ego never seeing anyone his equal to fight all out. The original route is te only one were he slightly fought with more effort against Saber and Shiro before the fatal strike. Gil was a warrior in his life to a degree but Shiro is right he is a one trick pony he just spams gate of babylon like a spay of projectile but there all top tier noble phantasm that being the original surpass the ones other spirits hold unless there not ones he could have obtained unique to a hero’s own legend like Karnas Spear but gill never masters them to there fullest the i think the only weapon he has that he mastered is Ea and he doesn’t pull it out till absolutely last minute depending on if you make him sweat. I know the popular theory is that Archer faked his death back in ep21, but I have a different thought. He's already explained that he's a Counter Guardian, and that the world itself summons him into times when all of humanity is facing an existential crisis, right? With the grail being maybe a few minutes away from unleashing a curse that would kill just about everyone on the planet, it makes sense that the conditions would be met for Emiya - the Counter Gaurdian, not the Servant - to be called up to resolve the threat.
That would also explain why he just shows up, killsteals Gil, and then disappears again right away, and why he says he can't make a new contract with Rin; he's not the same guy she's been dealing with this whole time, and not a Servant, so he doesn't have the right to make a Servant contract with her.

I recall hearing somewhere that in the Visual Novel, Shirou beat Gil without Archer needing to step in at the end. People were upset it got changed here. While I haven't seen what it was like for myself yet, so I can't give a totally unbiased opinion, I kinda prefer how the fight ends here. Gil was gonna use Ea, so that means, at least subconsciously, Gil acknowledged Shirou. That's honestly all that I really wanted from this fight. If he actually beat Gil all his own, that's great. Seeing that would be awesome. But Gil acknowledging, even subconsciously, that he most likely needed to use Ea in order to beat Shirou, tells us all we need to know. The anime gives Shirou the acknowledgement he deserves, and gives Archer one final badass moment to go out on. So, I'm happy with it.
Also, y'know, they're the same person at the end of the day, no matter how much they dislike each other. One's just been through more shit. I don't really get why one dealing the killing blow over the other is enough to tilt y'all so damn much. On his lore the "young" Gilgamesh is jaded because of how overwhelming he is compared to common folks. Even because of his bloodline, the Deities can't do a thing directly at him. His "boisterousness" actually acquired the scorn of the Gods and they send a clay doll imbued by the Gods power as their agent. Yes this clay doll is Enkidu.
The two fought epic battle until a few days later the fight ended up as draw. For once, young Gil can see someone on the same level as him and treat Enkidu as his equal. Enkidu who also abhorred as Gods agent decided to accept Gil friendship and the two became best friend.
The Gods doesn't like this and imbued Enkidu with a concept every mortal has, Death. Seeing the death of his best friend made Gil realized something. No matter how overwhelming he is, Death is something he can't deny. Thus his quest for immortality began and he left his kingdom.
Cut time short, he got what he wanted. Immortality finally in his grasp yet in a single moment it was taken from him. Instead of showing anger or remorse, he just laughed loudly. Some kind epiphany struck him. After that, he returned to his kingdom and govern as a wise king.
That is the Epic of Gilgamesh. The first Hero of human history

@@Squidward-jv7go Nah I don't give a shit about "defending" characters, I'm talking about poor narrative and inconsistencies. Servants are basically superheroes, where even a Caster with E ranked Strength is strong enough to crush a skull with 1 hand, and Gilgamesh is basically the strongest servant, I don't find it "weird" that he didn't use Ea from the get go as that wouldn't make any sense because he has 10000 ways to easily defeat Shirou that don't involve Ea. For starters Gilgamesh is very competent in melee even when nerfed in the Archer class, if Shirou's copying ability is so broken that he can easily be one of the strongest melee fighters in history that's just lame narrative, if he doesn't it makes no sense that a prepubescent school boy has the upper hand in CQC against Gil. Gil can instantly equip his armor and no that excuse of "he doesn't think Shirou's worthy of the aarmor"is bullshit as in any other route and other series he wears his armor even to take a shit, it never bothered him to wear it in front of X people. But they had Gil not wear his armor at all in the entire route because that's the route where Shirou needs to defeat him and if even Saber with Excalibur couldn't bypass that armor how much more bullshit they'd need for Shirou to achieve it? That's why Gil doesn't wear his armor at all. UBW only counters GoB spam machine but the difference between GoB and UBW is that UBW copies weapons while GoB has a ton of other stuff like shields, spells, conceptual weapons that Shirou wouldn't be able to copy, Gil also can turn an overpowered clairvoyance at any time to basically predict any move and outcome.
Poor narrative is when you build a character, you establish a certain number of abilities and skills that character has and when you need to get that character killed you just forget about everything that character has and you brief it all with the lame quote of "you're a king not a warrior", which btw is said by a prepubescent student.
If you can't understand why that's garbage writing and storytelling there's nothing else to discuss here

    • @neonplays609
      @neonplays609 Před rokem +6

@@zandergamer5429 Gil being average in swordmanship is consistent throughout the whole Fate universe. He never fights an opponent in a sword brawl, and even when he does, he makes sure to spam GoB on them when they come close to him to maintain his distance. Shirou at this point has (not fully) Archer's swordmanship, which he mastered after aeons of summoning, and it was clearly stated Shirou will caught up to Archer during their fight. Aside from that, projection allows the wielder to use the skills and swordsmanship of the people in possession of the weapon he projects, which was established early on in the fate route.
Gil's lack of armour is also consistent; due to his arrogance, he doesn't care who his opponents are or whether they are worthy or not, while putting on the armour on a whim. For example, while fighting the Berserker, who is a mile above Shirou in terms of power. Even when he decides to wear it in other Fate series, his upper half is always missing in F/HA, F/Extra, or while fighting Enkidu in FGO. He knows it’s a risk. He just doesn’t care. Gilgamesh cares more about being consistent in his values than he does about achieving results. After all, he’s a hero.
Anime is quite different from VN. In VN, Gil lost because Shirou didn't give him any room to breathe. The fight in VN is brief; Shirou immediately closes in on Gil after activating UBW. Shirou quickly forces Gil into a close fight, attacking him without giving Gil a moment to "relax," which causes him to lose his composure, so he won't be able to make any counterattacks while UBW takes care of GoB. Consider this analogy: if someone is attempting to kill you with a knife, you will not look for the gun in the drawer but instead focus on dodging the knife while being pressured by the assailant and not allowed to think. By the time you figured it out through thinking, it would be too late. As I have mentioned above, Gil isn't a warrior in swordmanship; he's just average at it. He would lose in a swordfight if he didn't have GoB to keep his distance, as stated in other series.
Ok here is the deal with Sha Naqba Imuru. It works differently from how Merlin's or Solomon's clairvoyance work. With it, he can see the truth behind a situation or the true names of things. For example, if he is fighting Artoria, he could see that she is using Excalibur instead of Caliburn without her needing to activate her NP. This skill does allow him to look into the future to a certain degree, but one big "downside" of this ability is that Gilgamesh purposefully doesn't use it most of the time. Another thing is that even if he looks into the future, he doesn't get all the information that led up to the thing that he is seeing (for example, in Fate/Strange Fake, he is confused by the fishing scene from Fate/Hollow Ataraxia). Another downside of this ability is that it's not all powerful; some things like the grail mud can actually block his future sight ability to some degree (we technically don't know what specifically he wanted to take a look at at that exact moment, but Gilgamesh does mention the mud is blocking it). And now comes the biggest and most fatal flaw of Sha Naqba Imuru: It is a Noble Phantasm that is owned by Gilgamesh, which means that even if he were to see something like being killed by a fake grail or a faker, he would just dismiss those possibilities as impossible. The main function of Sha Naqba Imuru is to guide Gilgamesh towards the best possible options for him, but Gilgamesh is a very moody and arrogant person who doesn't really like following guidelines or paths that aren't to his taste, so the power of Sha Naqba Imuru is simply similar to most of the NP in his treasury being wasted most of the time. Gil keeps it intentionally restrained, which is also consistent in F/Extra and FGO.
Please double-check your facts before saying things like "poor narration" or "garbage storytelling," especially if you don't know what is consistent and what isn't, because they are consistent throughout the fate universe. Saying "F/SN is shonen"-come on; it's been 20 years; shounen = target audience (not a genre). F/SN VN was aimed explicitly at adults.

@@neonplays609 It's not consistent, Gilgamesh is said to be fighting Saber equally for a while in the Fate route while other servants like Archer couldn't keep up with her which is another reason why Shirou copying Archer's skills shouldn't be enough to completely overwhelm Gil.
Also something I think you missed from my comment which doesn't only work for this matter specifically but it's also my main point here, is that I said myself that I know Shirou copies skills and not just weapons, what I call bad writting (and obviously very shounen like) is that Shirou has this magic that allows him to keep up with the strongest servant ever without a single year of training that has nothing to do with his mana boost as that basically only allows him to keep on going without running out of mana while in the Fate universe there're mages from ancient families that have been studying magic for centuries and these mages don't hold a candle to the weakest of servants, but this random prepubescent in a couple months of "learning" develops this magic that is completely overpowered and a cheap plot device.
Never said there isn't a "reason" for Shirou to do X thing, I said it's horrible writting and a cheap excuse.
Gil's lack of armor is definitely consistent no matter how you look at it, he's wore his armor against servants he's never met before and he hasn't given a shit, he has wore his armor against Caster in Fate Zero who he disgusted, he wore his armor to a fucking banquet where he was just drinking and talking (and by then he didn't respect Saber or Rider), he wore his armor against Caster in Fate route (because that's the route where Saber fights and defeats him) when Gil clearly thought very poorly of her. He has wore his armor in MANY occasions and hasn't ONCE mentioned that someone wasn't worthy of seeing the armor or him not needing it, the route in which he NEVER wears it is of course the one where Shirou's the one meant to defeat him, that's an objective inconsistency like it or not.
I read the VN a long time ago and that doesn't take away anything I said, for starters I said that Gil shouldn't be struggling against a prepubescent who didn't know anything about fighting or magic a couple weeks ago and EVEN if you accept how horrible the writing is with projection magic and Shirou has Archer's skills he should still be outclassed, and you can only justify so much and make excuses with Gil being "shocked" or "in denial" to a certain degree, what would be next, Gil was so full of himself and was so shocked he forgot to breathe as well?
And I mention Sha Naqba Imuru as one out of MANY (that I already mentioned) devices and skills Gil could use (immediately as well), I'm aware that he has it off all the time because he finds it boring but that thing DOES allow him to look into different possible timelines and moves he has to take to overcome his opponent so it's an even better clairvoyance or at least more suited for combat.
Also FSN being a shounen it's not a matter of beliefs, it's officially a shounen even though the narrative and the way the story works with all the cliches and predictable characters and outcomes should make it obvious.
Finally, I do respect that you want to defend an anime/novels/universe you obviously (judging by your profile pic) like a lot, but I'm just giving an opinion in one hand (because even though it's obvious poor writing for me many people like predictable outcomes and having boring hero characters that get the girl and defeat the bad guy in the most cliche way possible) and on the other hand I've pointed out irrefutable inconsistencies, I do like the Fate saga a lot but I don't consider myself a huge fan, I just like to judge series for what they are in the most objective and neutral way possible which you clearly can't do (and again I understand), but still I'm clearly not the one who needs to double check their facts.

You forgot Fate Route Saber Atoria is weaker because he has Shirou as her mana supply. Yet Gil still fought her with full armor
