    I’d suggest they will call her the “QUEEN ALEXANDRA”. Formerly the princess of Wales , The wife and consort of King Edward V11. 1901-1911, son of Queen Victoria. The term EDWARDIAN AGE is due to this era and their style. As the princess of Wales , Alexandra, was the Princess Dianna of her era, beautiful and adored by the British public.

  • @johnscanlan9335
    @johnscanlan9335 Před 2 lety +5

    There's a well-known, possibly apocryphal, story about how the original R.M.S. Queen Mary was actually named. There was a long-standing tradition in Britain that the use of any royal name for commercial purposes had to be directly approved by the reigning monarch. Cunard, the great British shipping line, had a well-known tradition of naming its ships with words ending in the letters "IA," like the Lusitania and the Aquatania.
    When Cunard was building their new, and as yet unnamed ship in the early 1930s, they thought the name "Queen Victoria" would be the perfect moniker for this grand new ocean liner because it recalled the legendary monarch while conforming to Cunard's "IA" naming tradition. So because of the need for then King George V's personal approval, the president of Cunard was granted an audience at Buckingham Palace and asked the King if the company could use the name of "England's greatest queen"? His Majesty was greatly complimented by the request, assuming Cunard was asking to use the name of his wife Queen Mary! So the King said yes you may use my wife's name for your new ship!!!
    Needless to say Cunard's president couldn't correct the King so the company just made do and named the ship in honor of Queen Mary.

    • @MiiFone1

      In English history there have been six undisputed Queen Regnants: Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne, Vicotria and Elizabeth II. So your history may not go back very far since there was Queen Mary 1 (Daughter of Catherine of Aragon) and her half sister Queen Elizabeth I (Daughter of Anne Boleyn) and Queen Mary II (daughter of James II) known also as William & Mary who were co-monarchs. All these were queens regent and so far as I know do not have ships to bear their names in honor. As a example the Queen Mary 2 could have been named after the Tudor Queen Regent Mary I instead of Mary of Teck who was just a Queen consort. Or perhaps Mary Stuart also a Queen Regent as Mary II or perhaps Queen Regent Elizabeth I. There's also the two disputed but could be technically correct by proclamation, the uncrowned Queens Regent Jane (Lady Jane Grey) or Queens Regent Matilda (Empress and Lady of the English).

Chantiers de l’Atlantique, once they had figured out how to build a true liner again, offered to build Carnival/Cunard another true liner at less than the cost of the first one, and Carnival declined. Pity. Cunard could have had another ship that was actually worthy of the “Queen Elizabeth” name. It needn’t have been the same size either. It could could have been a smaller ship, and one that could have docked at Pier 90 at the West Side Piers, without overshooting the end of the pier.

    There should, in fact, never have been any "Cunard queens". The tradition since the 'Camparia' of 1893 was to use names that ended in "ia". (Though there were various Cunard ships using "ia"-ending names before that, there were also a number of the line's vessels that did not.) Hence, 'Berengaria', 'Caronia', 'Lusitania', 'Mauretania', 'Hibernia', 'Persia', 'Caria', etc. (White Star Line used "ic": 'Baltic', 'Cedric', 'Tianic', 'Olympic', 'Britannic'.) The 'Queen Mary' was supposed to be named 'Victoria'. However, when officials of Cunard sought permission from King George V to name the liner after "Britain's greatest queen", The King replied that his wife, Queen Mary, would be delighted. Had the 'Queen Mary' been named 'Victoria', there'd have been no 'Queen Elizabeth' and, thus, no 'Queen Elizabeth 2', no 'Queen Mary 2', and so on.
    Cunard continued with the "ia" endings after both the 'Queen Mary' and 'Queen Elizabeth', all the way to the 'Nordia' in 1961. After that, only one other ship bore a name ending in "ia": the (third) 'Caronia', which had formerly been named 'Vistafjord' until the change in 1999. It was sold to Saga Cruises in 2004. Cunard has since, after 106 years, abandoned the "ia" tradition altogether and it seems all its ships will be named after queens from now on.

    • @Toast0808
      @Toast0808 Před 2 lety

      You assume that Hull 534 would have been named solely, “Victoria”. I posit that you are wrong. Had they named Hull 534 after Queen Victoria, then the name of the ship would have been the same: QUEEN VICTORIA. They would never have used the name “Victoria” alone.

    • @bayousbambino427
      @bayousbambino427 Před 2 lety

      You assume as much. However, the history of Cunard shows it only ever twice used a two-word name for any of its ships before 'Queen Mary': the little, 772 ton 'British Queen' of 1862 and the 'Royal George' of 1916, which Cunard owned for just four years. The names 'Margaret' and 'Berengaria' did not have 'Queen' before them. Nor did 'Lotharingia' have a 'Queen of' ahead of it. And, even among the 19 new ships run by the line after the launch of 'Queen Mary', only 'Queen Elizabeth' and 'Queen Elizabeth 2' had two-word names. There is thus nothing to suggest the name 'Queen Victoria' would have been used had George V not inadvertently forced Cunard's hand into naming the 1936 ship RMS 'Queen Mary'. Everything points to simply 'Victoria'.
