  • Are you heading to Strasbourg for the Christmas markets, or for the European Union, or for the Strasbourg University? Well if you are heading there as a tourist there are some incredible foods you should have there. Though you can get incredible traditional French food, what you really want are the Strasbourg specialities from saurkraut to potatos to sausages and pork shoulder and so much more. The beer is the best in France as well.

Christmas markets in Strasbourg are some of the finest in Europe. We ate and walked all day long. Lots of artisan goods worth taking home as well. The church in the square is an engineering marvel.

    As a German,
who lives in Karlsruhe, on the border with Alsace, and who has been to Strasbourg several times and to Alsace even more often,
I must say that Alsace belongs to France.
-Germans who lived a few generations before would stone me for this statement.
Because so many people died for this border question.
    -But it belongs to France.
It seems right to me that history ended the way it did.

      As a French citizen
A story that runs in my family. One of my great-grandfathers would completely agree with you. During the Franco-Prussian War, and after the annexation of Alsace by Bismark's troops on February 26, 1871 and May 10, 1871 with the Treaty of Frankfurt, he refused to live under Prussian rule. At the end of 1871, he left Wissembourg with his entire family (my grandmother Madeleine), leaving behind his properties; he was also the owner and headmaster of a private boys' boarding school where he also taught. He no longer wanted to hear a single word of German spoken at home. Fortunately, things have changed since then. He would have been horrified to learn that members of his family are married to Germans and that many of us speak German. He died heartbroken almost at the end of WWI,

Strasburger born and raised, thank you very much for the spotlight !
We were indeed a few centuries ago what could be called "a popular area" relying on farm work, hence lots of dishes with few and basic ingredients but able to fill you up for the whole day.
While in Strasbourg I strongly advise to taste the food and seek the historical anecdotes !
    Take care

We very often share ''tarte flambée''. It's very rare to have one for yourself. I've only really just seen tourists and students eat one on their own. You slice it into however many portions you need and everyone around the table gets a slice, then you order another one, maybe with different toppings. My advice is to start with the ''tarte flambée normale''. The basic ingredients are ''bibeleskaes'' (creamy cheese), onions and ''lardons'' (pancetta). And then, you may want to start ordering tartes flambées with additional toppings. A classic is '' tarte flambée gratinée'' (basic ingredients + emmental), ''forestière'' (basic ingredients + mushrooms), ''forestière gratinée'' (basic ingredients + emmental and mushrooms), ''munster'' (basic ingredients + a strong local cheese). You can have a classic ''pommes-calva'' for dessert (apples and a liquor that is burnt on the tarte at your table, very pretty to look at). If you speak to people in their 60s-70s-80s, many will tell you they wouldn't eat ''tarte flambée'' as children. It became popular later on, and it started off with the basic ingredients only, and then we just started experimenting with different ingredients! Another fun fact is that we call it ''tarte flambée'', whereas the ''French from the outside'' (that's what many older Alsatian people call non-Alsatian people who are French) try very hard to call it ''flammekueche''. The best places to eat them are in winstub and if you're in Strasbourg, it's best to go to the villages around Strasbourg. I quite like the one at the ''brasserie Storig'' in Schiltigheim, and the one at ''La Carpe'' in Souffel, at ''ce cher Hans'' in Vendenheim, or ''au Boeuf'' in Plobsheim but I'm sure you can find good ones in every village!

"French from the inside" ! Parce que les alsaciens sont français, mais évoquent les "français de l'intérieur". Sans doute parce que l'Alsace est à la frontière.

been to Strasbourg twice in 2022.. the only thing that puts me off as a tourist (who doesn't speak French) is that surprisingly not a lot of people speak German OR English. Especially the younger workers at the mall barely understood any English and spoke no German. And even though they're right on the border of Germany, the frenchman just don't put any effort into trying to speak another language. there was this amazing waiter in Le Gruber tho, he was just fantastic and so full of energy! Spoke both German and English and even tried saying his thanks to us in our own language. Sadly he wasn't there when we went for the second time:( overall Strasbourg is an amazing destination and I'll totally go back again.

Since childhood, I have travelled extensively because of my father's and, later, my husband's work overseas. When I am in Germany, in the UK or the USA, I don't expect people to speak my mother tongue French. If it puts you so much off, I don't see why you should come back to Alsace, if you don't even learn a few words in the local language.

Thanks for the review but there is so much more to say about the wine. Indeed white is the best in Alsace (red, based on Pinot Noir grape, is often a bit light or acidic in my view). White Alsacian wines are powerful wines, very tasty, quite often a bit sweet (sometimes too sweet, but precisely you can choose). In Alsace wines are classified first by the grape. Gewurstraminer is very aromatic, not to the taste of everyone. You easily find it as well as « Vendanges Tardives » which means the wine is more sweet and powerful (a must with « foie gras »). Riesling is my favourite one and goes with a lot of meals. Pinot Gris is very interesting too. Then Sylvaner is a bit light for me. You mentionned « Grand Cru », in fact all these wines can get this mention which points to (usually) the best wines, but also the most expensive (in shops Alsace wines range from 5 Euros to 30 Euros a bottle very often, and with 15-20 Euros you get really very good wines, with better value for money than other more renowned wines French areas).
