- This is my first impression of the Magna Carta Mag 600. I have heard a lot of hype about the pen. I wanted to try for myself.
I must note that after I edited this video, I got in touch with Hardik Kanakhara from MC, who graciously agreed to help me out with a new nib and feed. so, I'll be updating this review in the future. - Zábava
Also that’s a garbage one size fits all case, I can’t believe how pock-marked that Pen is. Holy crap, this review is awesome so far.
Thanks! :)
Thank you for taking one for the team. Great critical yet balanced review that will provide good feedback for MC on its continued improvement. Always good to have more flex offerings along with Osprey, Kanwrite and FPR. Indian pen makers and their supporters seem poised to rebirth an affordable flex tradition. I love the classic lines of the pen with that ebonite nod to the vintage. I think the packaging could be smaller/thinner a la vintage Waterman to lessen the impact of budget shoddy looking materials. The pen appeared loose unboxed but perhaps slipping it off the string was not shown. Stills at timestamps 07:07 and 07:17 appear to show tine misalignment but there was no mention of issues out of the box and your beautiful handwriting was unhindered. Shame on the inconsistency. Would be nice to have a consistent EDC flex writer even under non-flex conditions. I have no skipping with the stiffer stock #15 FA non-FNF feed enhanced; consistent as a Pilot is. Also Pen Realm's steel Secretary de Flex and Indy Pen Dance Linda Kennedy's gold Jowo 6 flex mod offer some consistency under flex conditions. But I do notice hard starts or skipping with FPR steel Ultra Flex and have to restart with wetting the tines, engaging the piston or flicking to reprime the feed. Maybe FPR's 14K gold Ultra flex is better though I think it may be the feed flow or switching to a favorable ink. Railroading and slow starts were shown and mentioned with Mag 600 but did you encounter any skipping or actual hard starts under non-flex writing conditions? Perhaps more feed channeling and longer QC testing will be a future improvement for MC and then the Mag 600 will really carve a niche, scratching the flex itch!
Thanks for the elaborate comment. The tines do get out of sorts at times like you saw, but can easily be Addis back owing to the softness. What worries me is that the right tine is now slightly misaligned beyond usual. I can still am able to put it back in place, but it is taking more and more effort.
In terms of unflexed writing, there is zero issues. To be honest, I feel like I pushed this pen to its limits [maybe beyond] during my 2 days of testing. However, the railroading is noticeable in submaximal flex situations. There are times that I can't make it railroad at all. So..... a bit of inconsistencies is the issue. I watched a couple of reviews after posting this, and others have had better experience [though I don't think the pen was pushed].
After this review, I reached Hardik, who is PR for the company. He, without any hesitation, promised to send me a new nib. Maybe I will update the review when I get that.
This pen has so much potential, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing the progress.
Cheers.
@@Shak-MD good to know unflexed writing had zero issues 🙂 i forgot to mention The Good Blue as another flex writer UK based, but have yet to try. As you say, much potential is there for the Mag 600 as MC has brought out a complete modern affordable flex gold nib package, one and done without the need for customer upgrades or shopping cart options. QC and finetuning seem to be valued with this market segment. Given a smaller audience, i doubt Scribo or Santini can provide a lower segment offering and Jowo 6 'flex' from Leonardo and others is not performant. So there is opportunity for makers to pursue with product consistency translating to favorable reviews. Fingers and tines crossed for fulfilling future flex!
So close, but yet so far! It is a mystery to me that modern pen makers can't replicate the fabulous flex nibs of a century past. I do note that the wonderful, antique flex nibs I write with are very small compared to the "supersize" ethos of our times.... But, there you have it: nice flex, for a quick demonstration, but for simple writing? It is not clear to me that Magna Carta has done very much to improve on the work of Fountain Pen Revolution, whose flex nibs admit of glorious line variation, if one doesn't want to write a complete paragraph. Which I generally do. Thank you again, Doctor, as ever for an incisive and pleasant review!
I am honestly very impressed by the flex on Mag 600. It is softer than my vintages. And on the right pen [see the Kyusedo Kakari pen], it is unbeatable.
Thank you for your video! Beautiful penmanship. I toyed with the idea of trying this but probably won’t .
I say you try it in person. You may fall for it. It is amazing when it doesn't skip 😀. Maybe take it easier than I did. I really pushed the pen.
it is not the feed, it is the nib shape. The nib should be curved down to retain contact with feed when it is flexing and so the feed will feed ink to the nib while flexing.
I noted that the waterman's flex nibs do have that curve downwards. Magna Carta does not have that. I'd be interested in long term durability of it...time will tell. I am just uploading an ultimate new vs. vintage flex comparison-- Let me know what you think :) It should be ready later today. Thanks :)
@@Shak-MD , The form will not change durability in this case. But, it will change ink flow and contact between nib and feed. A curved down nib has a conical nib ink channel to hairline when not flexed and delivers ink when flexed, opening the tinnes and too the ink channel. the curved part is too an ink reservoir between the feed and the nib. So the bent down let the nib delivers the right amount of ink need at each nib situation. It will provide a more confortable flex behavior too. The nib hold its form a bit longer before bending and delivering line width and so. This is a nice feature for spencerian that has light widdenings at minuscules, exemple: the end part of l and the h (note that the widdening is not at the same area, so you can't never misunderstand an l and h; same can be seen between a and g, both has the same basic form of a but the a has a widening and second stroke upper part while g has a widdening at down loop).
Spencerian do not need a big amount of flex to work. But, it needs an light flexing nib to be effective. This pen is perfectly fine for it. Not ideal because lack of nib form but useable.
I really do not understand why people wanna so much line widening. It is more for ornamental penmanship than real spencerian.
Note: this nib is more suitable for copperplate (English Round Hand) because of its straight geometry that turn the flexing more constant, with minimum force on the nib it begins bending. This means that each down stroke tends to bent the nib. Ok, this is the rule for English Round Hand. This is not the rule for Spencerian.
Spencerian calls for a bent down nib to be fully manageable. It is possible with this nib but not ideal.
Interesting, thank you!
Thanks.
How do you find this flex nib performs with respect to softness and snapback?
The flex almost rivals vintage flex. Snapback leaves some to be desired....the tines dont align perfectly after a few flexes... but can be adjusted in place easily. My pen is newer...and I'd have to see how it ages.
Thank you for the informative review. How would you rate this to the MB 149 Calligraphy flex pen, in terms of flex performance, and also as a daily writer when you are not flexing it? Thanks.
In terms of flex, this pen is much flexier out of the box. 149 takes a while to take off, and is not as good at flexing. However, it makes up for its price difference by the feel in hand, quality of workmanship, quality of the nib, customer service, and more importantly, day-to-day usability. The Mag is a good flexier---- like a watered down dip nib on a pen. It is great for flex writing. However, the tines go out of sorts easily. They are easy to put back together, but I am not anticipating much durability out of it with consistent use. In other words, it is not confidence inspiring. The build of Mag is almost precisely like those Schaffer's calligraphy pen sets you can get at staples [less than 5 dollar a piece]. However, it IS made of ebonite----whatever differences that makes. The engraving on Mag is super sharp and rough----overall it is a good first draft, but needs soo much work. I can go on and on.
Hi @@Shak-MD Thank you very much for your reply and detailed comparison. It sounds like the Mag is a fun pen for the flex, but as an overall everyday and forever pen, can't replace the 149C.
@jungroe94 You are correct to conclude that. Of course, others will opine differently.
Have you reviewed the 615 from The Good Blue or the Blue Dew?
No. But I am looking into Blue Dew. Seems interesting.
the reason I ask is that my Mag 600 works for a while and then goes dry could it be the feed?
It is mostly that unholy convertor. An eyedropper does much better. Just eyedrop the Mag600. It will be better....but still not perfect. I dip it in a bit of water or ink...it goes for a while :)
@@Shak-MD I put a new converter in and yes it helped I can write a three page letter, sometimes two and a half, it runs dry. I have to get air out of the converter and it does ok. Do you I dropper yours. If so where do you get the o-ring.

SHAK-MD can you use the Mag 600 nib in another pen
Yes, the nib unit unscrews and can be put in opus 88. I can put it in my favorite Kyuseido kakari pen. It works great.
Do you think that a converter can not work well with a flex nib? Guess you answered that. Good feedback. I was thinking about it because of the price, but stopped short. Rather look for vintage flex and save up for a SCRIBO.
What a perfect timing for this question. This pen can be eyedropper by my personal experience.
Watch out for my Waterman nib on Jinhao 9019 ... video in works for quick release. Hint....it is unstoppable!
Gonna wait on this thanks. Maybe will be improved in the future.?
Hope you get a chance to at least try it in person. ❤
Thank you for the review. I nice honest review---------too bad about the railroading------same problem with the Pilot 912 until you buy a modified feed-----then railroading is a thing of the past. Looks like Magna Carta could use the same sort of modification.
Thanks. I Semi fixed the issue by transplanting the nib and feed to another pen.. Now, it is mindblowingblowingly awesome.
what pen did you transfer too. @@Shak-MD
I'll shall visit their office on friday in Mumbai. I'll try to get some more information.
Do it! And please let us know what your thoughts are :) Good luck!
@@Shak-MD So I visited the factory and met with one of the owners. They have no retail outlet in India, they only supply stores and their own site. About customer support he said to use the one on their website, but I'm not sure that will work, it's so tiny an operation, I had no idea. And yes, no warranty, returns etc, it is what it is. They have no market for india, few spend on pens here, the ones that do get best of class service as it's 1 to 1 and you can visit. So maybe talking to them directly is best.
I tried many pens there, many Mag 600, check the machines the nibs were made on, fantastic stuff, I particularly loved a all back polished ebonite body pen with the usual metal trim in gold.
Yesterday I happened to also receive my long awaited 146 flex, I got to try them out side by side, the 600 is true flex, the MB wrote thinner without pressure.
So the MB thing happened a few hours before the visit, I was aghast with the scratchiness but by minute 10 I discovered the rhythm to the flex writing and the feedback disappeared as long as I kept the rhythm going, press down, spring back, press down spring back, such a wonderful revelation. And no skipping and railroading Diamine, onyx black.
Anyways back to the point, with Magna Carta, your best options short of visiting them is you're basically on your own, I don't think they will ever have the bandwidth in the near future to have "customer services" as such. Buy because they're the best at a certain thing and that's it. Take it or leave it sort of thing.
I'm sorry that's not probably what you were looking for. Perhaps at the least you know it is what it is for now.
Good product, roll the dice and hope for the best, overlook the details and enjoy what you bought it for I suppose.
DM me and I could share his whatsapp number, that could be a thing for you to at least speak to the man/men.
At the 7:07 it looks like the nib is sprung. The tines are dramatically misaligned. I do not know wheather you have noticed that on writung or not (hard starts, scratchiness etc).
It does look like it. The tines do cross st times by the virtue of softness they have. But easy to re align them. The pen is pretty smooth and gets fine lines. I did a follow up writing sample. Do let me know what you think. 😀
Lots of nasty a railroading too!! Is that because it has such a small feed system?
This generation of nibs had issues. I believe they have fixed the issue in the newer generation. They sent me a replacement, and it is the sweetest thing ever :) :)
Anyone have a coupon code for 75% for this pen? Please I need the coupon and pen I need Xmas miracle
I don't do promotion stuff on my channel, but they do go on sale some times. Maybe on new years. I saw this pen go for around 250 around black Friday.
P.S. Maybe I'll give one away when I reach 10K, or maybe a MB 146 :) :D :D :D
😂 My man didn’t hold back on that janky packaging.
Truth be told---right? :) :)
It's so sad that the best modern day flex is connected to so many QC issues. Even the box it arrives in is of poor construction. What a shame!!!! $300.bucks.for what.should be a $150 pen.
Agree that the pen needs refinement. The nib, however, is amazing, unlike many other modern flex nibs.
The packaging is of no use to any pen enthusiast. The fountain pen will end up in a pen case.
I am with you to an extent. However, many times, packaging is a sign of what is inside...which, unfortunately, somewhat true of this pricy pen. for around 400 US dollars----it is unacceptable. Look at the 180 dollar Hongdian Qin dynasty pen----the nib quality is not subpar, the build quality is years ahead, and the box it comes in reminds me of a grand piano.
🛤️ 🚂
Haha. I think you mean railroading.... 😀.
I hope that when I buy a 600$ and up Pen, the freaking box isn’t mangled like yours was. Good grief…
I fully agree. They made a 4th of JUly flag themed pen as well with PenChalet. I think the box is the same box, though overlaid with USA flag. lol.
@@Shak-MD TREASONOUS DOGS!!
@@Shak-MD well I really appreciate you’re videos. I literally just got into the “scene” weeks ago. Mostly just to have a nice all occasion one. I bought 3 from W&B one for me, my Dad and my Son. I love them and I’m waiting for two to come in from F&B.
@@Shak-MD this was the one I saw a lot of and honestly this was the most honest and gritty review. I did t want to go that “hard in the ink” right away, I’m super glad I saw this first. Not just the boxing, but the lack of care in general for the product, I would have been freaking out if that happened to me, thanks for taking that grenade for me bud!!
@vicstanfieldshire7754 Thank you for the kind words. Feel free tonbrows the channel and let me know if there are any questions.
Mag 600. Biggest piece of junk and waste of money in my pen journey, ever. Total garbage.
It's tough to argue..... The pen does feel like an unfinished product. The edges are rough. Feels like one of those Shaffer's calligraphy set pens [9$]..... but the nib flexes better that most other modern pens. MC has some work ahead of them.
Also, mine just started leaking the ink into its cap while not in use.
I have a Magna Carta elements that does the same. Actually, more like it suddenly burps half the ink into the cap while not in use. MC clearly has some quality control issues to deal with.
Who cares about the box !! Get on with the review.
The video is chaptered, FF to 4:00 ...... Thanks for watching. I should do an updated review with the new nib version.. much nicer.
