The 24mm G Master doesn't have the new XD-Linear focus system, but a DDSSM system. That's why it is louder and a little bit slower and that's why I bought the 20 mm lens. For use on a gimbal the 20 mm is better as well.
Great review as always and congrats on 10K💥 been a subscriber of yours since you were only at 200
best lens for video?
Any recommendation
Awesome comparison as usual thanks
Another great video!! Thanks!!
Very helpfull comparison. It helped me a lot in my decision. Thanks a lot Stefan !!
so hard to decide which one to pick! extra focal length? extra aperture ?
Very useful information 👌
Thanks much Stefan for the comparison review. Enjoyed it.
Wondering, if you are going to review the 135/1.8 FE lens? I will be waiting for that...thanks kindly again. Please take care and stay safe.
Glad you liked it! That is one awesome looking lens that I hope to get my hands on soon!
The name of the Lens are Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, I have it, it is the best ever 135mm Lens at the moment.
Hi! very nice comparison! What do you think about distortion in portraits compared to the 24mm GM? Can I get the same result by cropping a photo taken with the 20mm to reach 24 than taking it with the 24? Will there be any difference in perspective and distortion in the case of cropping? Thanks
Thanks for making this video, just what I needed to watch! I have the Sony 20mm G and am trying to decide if I should trade it in for the Sony 24 mm GM. I mostly use my lens for video and vlogging. What do you think? ( fyi, I also have a Tamron 17-28 lens)
Thank you for this video..
I'd like to see a review of another new lens, the samyang 75mm f 1.8.. how it performs in terms of video and all the tests that you do it terms of performance
and if possible a comparison with viltrox 85 f 1.8 and sony 85 f 1.8
although they're not similar but I'm really confused between samyang 75 and viltrox 85 and sony 85
it will be great help if you do that video in near future
Thank you in advance
My 30mm sigma f1.4 breathes like crazy when autofocus is on and doing talking head. I’d like to find a new talking head lens that I can use autofocus and not have constant breathing/pulsing.
Very good review, thank you. Love the bokeh from the g master, the 20mm shows a bit nervousness which I am not fan of.
I have the 20 and its really great.
Thx for the video! 🇧🇷
That landscape comparison is exactly why I got the 20mm. That extra 4mm is woah when you're standing at the edge of an Alpine Lake
@@Someone-lc6dc wider lenses with a comparable aperture usually have fixed lens hoods which makes it more complicated to use filters. So 20mm 1.8 is a good compromise.
Hi there - According to Sony, the focus mechanism of the older 24mm is not the same as the newer twin motor linear design found in the 20mm later lens - the 24mm I understand from Sony documentation is of the older hypersonic rotary design - hense no sliding back and for motion (noise) whilst not powered up by a turned on camera body (fitted to).
This explains the disconnected, sliding, back & fore noise you describe hearing from the non powered up 20mm G lens
God bless
24 GM of course
I think there’s something to be said for picking up a second hand 24 GM for $1,000-1,100, I’m not even sure if it’s as worth it as getting a 24-70 for most people though
Just saw the new video of the Tamron 20mm 2.8. Still trying to figure out of the 20mm Sony is the one for me. I do strictly photos (no video yet).
The Sony is the better lens but 3x the price and no macro. I like the Tamron line for stills, not so much for video.
thank you =)
I will pick the 20mm asap
For wide shots 20mm all the way, but 24mm F1.4 can do both fairly-wide and wide-standard shots at the same time. 24mm F1.4 is similar to 35mm F2.0 when cropped down, which is still shallow enough. I need both 😂
No coma comparison? Huge omission considering the XA elements are one of the major differences between these lenses.
The 20mm handles chromatic abberation much better than the 24mm too plus it s sharper mostly to the corners tested by other utubers in night mode. My 24gm is on sale and i will be getting the 20mm soon
the 24mm GM bokeh is little more lemon shaped than the 20mm.
I personally want to do environmental portrait with this purchase aside from close up portrait with my sigma 85 art. Landscape from time to time after the portrait maybe but only at maybe 30-40%? I think I will get the 24GM and maybe get a another wider lens for landscape. Maybe 15, 16mm.
Which is better for vlogging?
Thank you. I have the 20mm and wanted to buy the 24-70 gm lens to pair it with it for filmmaking vlogging and personal pictures. But I'm wondering if I should replace my 20mm for the 24mm gm. But idk if pairing it with the 24-70 makes sense. Lol I'm confused.
I have both. 4mm are not small difference at all.
What are the best combination for you?
1. Sony 24mm 1.4 GM
2. Sony 20mm 1.8 G + Sony 35mm 1.8
3 Tamron 17-28mm 2.8 + Sony 35 1.8
I have option 3. I dont know what I am missing out on as I didnt get to try the 20 and 24. 35mm f1.8 has the same nervousness for bokeh as the 20mm. I am considering getting the 24 in addition and use the others for mainly video or specific purposes when I need the different focal lengths, but 1250 (after cashbacks) is a lot of money. They again I could imagine this is not what it will cost as I guess 2nd hand value will be good, unless I drop it or it gets stolen.
I dont like my Tamron 17-28 thats why im seeking a sony prime
I already have tamron 28-75, tamron 35-150 & tamron 70-300
What is difference between both in terms of cinematic look....if not much difference...can I go for 20 in order to save money ??
which one you think is better for portrait?
From reading other reviews, I hear the 24 holds it own for portraits, but would like to hear your thoughts. I guess what im looking for is something that can do both portraits and landscape without it being a zoom lens.
Wow, you look less distorted with 20. I expected the opposite.
Enjoyed this one Stefan! I do own the GMaster (bought before the 20 mm was announced) so I am a bit biased in my thinking but I do think that it is a more versatile lens than the 20mm both in the focal length and the low light capabilities. I love the rendering from the GM and was instantly blown away by the images I got from it -it is now my new standard for lenses and worth every dollar ( even Canadian!), imo..I have had a chance to play with the 20 f1.8 at a camera store just before the pandemic lockdowns and it is definitely a mini version of the GM and noticeably smaller and lighter. I played with the Sony 35 f1.8 at the same time and out of the two the 35mm surprised me more-; that looks like a great lens and super fast AF!
Thanks! Is it really a surprise the GM is better? Like most comparables, they are usually 80% of the top of the line. For me, as I get pickier, a lens is only as good as its Auto Focus. 😀
@@StefanMalloch Ha,ha,ha Stefan, our "pickiness" is going to be noticed in our bank accounts ( I feel the same way and now rate lenses against the "best" thanks to my experience with the 24 GM. Maybe less 'quantity' but more 'quality' in lens selection going forth should be our motto!
The focus/aperture noise is a deal breaker for me.
The GM is the Allrounder, the 20 is ok but if you want to Go wide, you will Use more than 20. 18 or 16
yeah tbh i prefer 18, i use my 24mm for potrait its so good the background just something to tell rather than 50 +
Yeah love the GM. I use 18mm batis for wider but will Pano the 24 when shooting astro.
I will have to buy the 20mm much cheaper.. if money is not the issue ill get the 24.
Thanks for the video. So many haters lol in the comment. Seems like the typical photography crowd lol.
I'd prefer the 14mm GM for being wider and I'd prefer the 24mm GM for being faster.
Where's my SONY 18mm F1.4 GM...?
No Astro photography shots, or any sort of tests on coma or astigmatism? Not here, nor on the full reviews of each lens? That's probably more important than "Bokeh" rendering on super wide angular lenses.
Can't win can I 😂 Ill try to ad more in the future as I do every time. Its a balance of time, effort and sanity.
@@StefanMalloch thanks a lot for the honest reviews. If getting a clean shot of the stars is a problem due to the whole lockdown/quarantine situation, you can shoot at any street lights, getting those lights close to the corners to get an idea of those.
Thanks!
I agree. The 1.4 was touted as an Astro lens. Both excellent lenses for this application but the 1.4 can be used wide open, which is a massive deal.
I don't get using a brick wall for sharpness comparison. It all looks the same.
Lots of fine detail. Make sure you're watching in 4k for the best results. I have recently switched to a nice shiny new test chart!
No comparison between these lenses except being Sony. Maybe a better comparison would be to Sigma counterparts or Rokinon.
Ok cool so it’s not just my 24gm that makes noise.. haha
24mm FF is not a landscape fov...it's for indoors but not for landscape, it's just not that wide. I'm also surprised that wide open 20G is sharper in both center and corners than 24GM...Amazing job from Sony.
Of course it’s a landscape fov. Any lens can be a landscape lens. There are no rules for what lens is used when. Creativity and skill of the photographer determines that, nothing else.
i mean... concluding that the $500 more expensive f1.4 Gmaster is better isnt really much of a conclusion. I think the goal of this video needs to be "should you buy the 20 f/1.8 over the g master" and show if you can get results similar to the gmaster on the 20 mm. and that if there is a compromise, is it worth the price difference.
and as usual, if you are a pro/rich, get the g master. if you are a hobbyist/brokeAF, get the 20 mm, crop in, and deal with the bokeh.
My Sony 20mm f / 1.8 is terrible...
@@JJ-vp3bd it's a great lens if you don't already own a wide one. I already had the batis 18mm, which is a stellar lens. Sold the 20 and got the 24GM again.
@@JJ-vp3bd I'd go the 20. But check around locally for used, may get the batis 18mm a fair bit cheaper.
mate stop do videos because all what you do that is talk about 24mm because you like it more i dont see real facts of lenses i just hear 24mm 24mm 24mm and i see more samples for 24mm not similar with 20mm
Sick of the 10 minute 30 second videos. Hopefully CZcams algo penalizes such videos.
They actually reward it. However, most of my videos are under 10 minutes. What part would you have me take out?
Not sure why CZcams would penalise a great video review like this on by Stefan.
Honestly, even if it was 10 minutes long, it felt quicker - so good stuff, Stefan. Keep up with the amazing work.
@@StefanMalloch You can do the focusing test (all tests pretty much) side-by-side which would save you like 20 seconds. Makes for a better comparison too!
So which one is it for you? 😎
24GM!
GM looks like the winner for me. Good one thanks
Got the 20mm and for astro is f** good for the price. Astro is a very difficult benchmark and the results are impressive. Also like the 20mm length is more versatile to be my lens on the wide-side. I can always do small crops or get slightly closer but getting further away isn't always an option (specially not in astro, but also when shooting buildings or indoors). I've saved the difference to get a 100-400 where I think the GM will bring me much more value than in the wide prime side.
yes
