  • While fly fishing a local stocked trout stream, I came across two struggling trout that had been hooked and got tangled and left. Being the conservationist I am, I tried to free them. While I was at it, I removed some fishing line from the stream.

    A tool we seriously need is wire cutters with the profile of needle nose pliers or forceps, so we can cut the hooks and feed the pieces out of the flesh.
    Regular wire cutters work beautifully on bigger fish and largemouth bass, but we need something for trout and panfish.

    So sad to see. I'm glad you did something.
    Every time I fish I take everything i brought with me, and any trash i find that i can take with me.
    Respect for the sport is respect for the fish and for our land. Treat them kindly. ❤

    It's possible for them to survive but you did the right thing with both of those fish. Awesome!

      thanks! that stream really warms up in the summer. it's unlikely any trout survive.

    The amount of stuff that gets left behind intentionally or not, is appalling at some streams. Nothing contributes to landowners posting their land quicker than garbage strewn all over the place. There are a couple posted properties I was able to fish because I had an agreement to remove litter along the waterway. I do 1 or 2 parody videos through the year, always on the opening day and then as time permits (this years parody video was my group using household items on the first day to fish with) but I really wanted to do a video repurposing people's litter and fishing with it. maybe next year.

      We’ve done cane poles, antique rods, handlines, xxx lures, and this year we made our own with household items

    This is why I carry a pair of long, narrow hemostats . For those fish that decide to try to swallow the fly.

    The hook will rust and the trout should have a good chance of surviving. Better than trying to dig the hook out. You did the right thing brother !!….good on you 👍😁❤️🎣❗️

    Very little can be done if a line snaps with a fish hooked, I've cast netted a bass before when its happened to me, but the odds of catching the fish again are slim to none in most cases

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 20 dny +1

      true. but leaving that much line in the water seemed crazy to me. but it's looking more and more like a poaching activity.

    The problem with trout is they are so delicate. But you did everything you could. Nice job.

      @@theineptflyfishermanI’ve actually started using small circle hooks for trout, that helps them not get gut hooked but it still happens occasionally.

    Thank you for this. I hate when I find tangles of line on the ground at a fishing spot.
    In terms of the rig here, a lot of things aren't adding up. I think this might be someone else poaching like a few others mentioned.

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 20 dny +1

      yeah, i agree. it definitely seems like poaching activity. it never dawned on me that's what it was.

    Lots of birds lose feet, legs, wings and their lives to improperly discarded monofilament. It's a nasty environmental hazard.

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 21 dnem

      yes! i collect even my small pieces of line that i cut of when putting a new fly on. i keep them in my bag and dispose of them at home.

    00:29 tied to land line poaching or the warden showed up. they'll blame the state resident fishing license requirements for not being able to afford it. already happening in California. that's why they got rid of the license display law. I feel sorry for the current and next generation. in fact, they were probably watching you as you were letting their fish go. don't be surprised if theres a weed patch nearby. no joke

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 21 dnem

      wow, that hadn't even crossed my mind. it was a single line with two hooks. very possible poaching activity. i'll keep an eye out for more. if i start seeing it a lot, it is definitely purposeful.

    You would not believe all the trout with lines tangled in snags i free on a regular basis here in sw pa..these poor streams get absolutley HAMMERED on a daily basis

    I hate to say it but it doesn’t take a lot of intelligence to fish and so a lot of the ppl who fish have no respect, common sense or manners. I really do hate to say stuff like this but I clean up so much like and trash from other fishermen and I see type of ppl who leave it behind.

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 21 dnem

      i don't think they're dumb, but many folks definitely don't respect the stream or the land. I clean up a lot of stuff as well. i'm afraid it's an uphill battle.

  • @DeepNorthAdventures

    Looks like it could be an illegal taught line set up. Very old method that doesn't involve any sport to it.

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 21 dnem +1

      another commenter mentioned it could be poaching. i will be keeping an eye out for this in the future.

  • @MoonlightGrahamCracker

    Trot line or snapped line you think?

    • @theineptflyfisherman
      @theineptflyfisherman  Před 9 dny +1

      it didn't even cross my mind at the time, but i'm thinking it was a poaching line after some folks commented that.

    You could have done better. All you needed was a small twig with a small Y to reach inside and remove the hooks. Koodos for setting them free..

    open borders.... good luck with that. any angler living in LA knows how bad it can get since the 80's. any clean up is just temporary
