Triumph - Lay It On The Line - Rik Emmett - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Singing Lesson
“Lay It On The Line” was a modest hit in the US but enjoyed much more success in Canada helping Triumph earn their first Juno award nomination the year it was released.
What other Canadian bands can you think of that flew more under the radar without enjoying the same level of success in the US? Let me know in the comments!
Rik Emmett is just an amazingly talented singer and guitar player and as we look at his isolated vocals we’ll see how he masterfully connects his chest and head voice to get more range.
I’ll explain how we can get up that high while still maintaining control and power and what we can do to be able to replicate this kind of a sound night after night.

Love Fran Cosmo. He is close to my age and grew up close to me in the Mohawk Valley. Bostons Walk On was mostly the lead vocals (with help from Gary Pihl). FYI Brad Delp had committed to the Band RTZ so he was on hiatus for awhile. He never missed a live tour until his death. Fran did co vocals with him in tour. They are hard to find but after Brads death Matthew Sweet did vocals.

Rik Emmett/ Triumph, is sadly so underrated!!! Lay it on the line is such an amazing rock song! Still holds up & rocks just as hard today as it did in 79! Lay it on the line, Starship’s, Jane & Toto’s, Hold the line, which I believe all came out in 1979 & are the epitome of timeless rock n roll royalty!!!
RE’s vocal chops should be right up there with the best of the best!
Triumph deserves way more credit & recognition for they’re musicianship, vocals, lyrics, etc. Fight The Good fight, Time Goes By, Magic Power, Hold On, Somebody’s Out There, &
so many more hits, that really rock!
I don’t know why Triumph isn’t more relevant in rock history, but they should be! Thanks for throwing this up Ken! RE’s vocals are just ridiculous! 🤘

Some of the best singing and singers can be found in 80's hard rock. It gets scrutinized a lot for the glam hair, but it is such a disservice to not recognize it. Many songs featured vocal acrobatics and I do understand that the market became saturated with it and people lost interest because it became overblown and deadened the excitement for it. "Oh, another band with a singer who hit a C#6 without any effort? Who cares?" But that gymnastic singing is what I love so much about that era of music. The industry did become about looking for singers who either sounded like Robert Plant or Bon Scott.

I love Triumph, i like Rush as well, but vocally there's no comparison between Geddy and the Power house of Rik and Gil... Rik was not only a great singer and a atellar guitar player, He was the main songwriter... as far as the pitchiness, our ears have become over sensitive to pitch... perfect spot on, autotuned overworked vocals are part of the bland over processed problem with music today. There are no chances taken when perfect words from 14 takes are welded together in an issolation tank. Emotion should be unpredictable... listen to a couple breaking up, it's emotional, it's raw, it's real....The music of today is anything but real.

Magic Power is probably the least cheesy & most cool song about a 'musical believer' really wanting to play music and connect with people over a song on the radio. From the Intro to the build to the melodies and interweaving lead parts...
Unfortunately it's probably the song the record companies wanted to pressure Triumph to keep making. "Somebody's Out There" is the same formula, and while musically excellent it does feel more crafted and less from the heart.

"Fight the Good Fight " is in D minor
The pitch D5 is sung pre chorus
"Don't be discouraged don't be afraid, I am counting on you"
    And D5 in the chorus.

Its good hearin "pitchiness" outta the Pro's b/c Im realizing that trks can be off as much as -6/+6 semitones and not really be"that" detectable in the full mix, especially tracked with LIVE parameters like I do. Thanks for the Rik Emmett vocal review Ken. He was/is a fantastic guitarist and vocalist. Orion the Hunter had Fran Cosmo on lead vocals with Brad Delp on backgrounds. I believe that Cosmo, Delp and Barry Goudreau all collaborated on the high range stuff on that record.

My very first concert was Triumph with Yngwie Malmsteen in 1986. So cool to hear these isolated vocals! Your videos are teaching me to appreciate many different aspects to the art.

Awesome analysis! But if memory serves me well, it's worth of note that this track had also some extra backing vocals in the chorus from a couple singers, one of them Elaine Overholt, which is a very accomplished artist on her own.
Nice job and now looking forward to a new Triumph track analysis, especially one sung by Gil Moore!

Seen Triumph several times & Rik solo once at The Odeon in Cleveland in 1998. The intimate show at The Odeon was incredible, he sounded awesome that night! The guitarist/vocalist in the band I was in at the time went to the show with me & he was blown away by Rik. I love his song 'Out of the Blue' off of Ipso Facto.

Thank you Ken for the vocal analysis of Rik Emmett. The comparison to Geddy Lee never occurred to me. I saw Rik Emmett in my hometown about 25 years ago. If you haven't heard the song "Killing time", I highly recommend it. It has him and Gil Moore singing together. The two of them sound great together. Cheers from Ottawa.
